Mr Johan Arief, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Malaysia in Lebanon, undertook a visit to Syria on Friday, 22 May 2026, following the passing of Allahyarham Datuk Dr Samir Al-Kour, Honorary Consul General / Commercial Advisor of Malaysia in Damascus, Syria, as part of Malaysia’s continued commitment to convey condolences, solidarity and support to his family during this difficult period.
During the visit, Mr Johan Arief met with the late Allahyarham Datuk Dr Samir Al-Kour’s sons, Mr Ghayth Al-Kour, Mr Tarek Al-Kour and Mr Hamza Al-Kour, together with other immediate family members, and conveyed Malaysia’s deepest condolences on behalf of Malaysia.
Mr Johan Arief also attended the funeral prayers held after Friday prayers at Saad bin Muadh Mosque, followed by the burial at Bir Al-Touta Cemetery. Prayers were offered for Allahyarham’s soul to be blessed with Allah’s mercy and placed among the righteous and faithful.
The visit also provided an opportunity for Mr Johan Arief to engage with Malaysian students studying in Syria who were present at the mosque, reflecting the close bonds of solidarity and community among Malaysians abroad.
The Embassy also extends its appreciation to the Office of the Honorary Consul of Malaysia in Syria and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Syria for the smooth coordination and facilitation throughout the visit.
