High-Level Meetings in Lebanon to Strengthen Sri Lanka–Lebanon Relations
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon, Mr. Anura Withanage, held a series of high-level courtesy meetings with senior Lebanese leadership as part of efforts to further strengthen the longstanding friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Lebanon.
During a meeting with H.E. Dr. Nawaf Salam, Prime Minister of Lebanon, Ambassador Withanage held warm and constructive discussions on matters of mutual interest, including the welfare of Sri Lankan workers in Lebanon, cooperation relating to UNIFIL, bilateral trade, and opportunities to enhance Sri Lanka’s exports to Lebanon, particularly Ceylon Tea, spices, apparel, and other value-added products.
Prime Minister Salam spoke warmly of Sri Lanka, describing it as a beautiful country and expressing interest in visiting Sri Lanka in the future. Ambassador Withanage cordially invited the Prime Minister to visit Sri Lanka at a mutually convenient time. The Prime Minister responded positively, noting that he would be pleased to consider such a visit once the prevailing regional situation stabilizes.
As a gesture of goodwill and friendship, Ambassador Withanage presented the Prime Minister with a silver gift featuring the map of Sri Lanka, while the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for Sri Lanka’s renowned Ceylon Tea.
Ambassador Withanage also paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon, where warm discussions were held on further strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between Sri Lanka and Lebanon. During the meeting, the Ambassador presented the Speaker with a special gift of premium Ceylon Tea, symbolizing friendship and Sri Lanka’s rich heritage.
These high-level engagements reflect Sri Lanka’s continued commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations with Lebanon.
The Ambassador was accompanied by Attaché Mr. M.H.R.A. Iqram of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beirut.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka Presents Letters of Credence to the President of Lebanon

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Lebanese Republic, Mr. Anura Withanage, presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Joseph Aoun, President of the Lebanese Republic, today.

Upon arrival at the Presidential Palace, Ambassador Withanage was accompanied by officials and received with ceremonial honours, including a Guard of Honour and the playing of the national anthems of Sri Lanka and Lebanon.

During the meeting, Ambassador Withanage conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayake, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. He also reiterated Sri Lanka’s strong commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

The discussions were cordial and constructive, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and people-to-people engagement. His Excellency President Aoun warmly welcomed the Ambassador and expressed his openness to continued dialogue, inviting further discussions at any time on matters of mutual interest, including the expansion of economic and trade relations.

Ambassador Withanage expressed his appreciation for the President’s goodwill and reiterated his commitment to advancing the strong and friendly ties between Sri Lanka and Lebanon.

Today in Beirut: Ambassador Anura Withanage, Ambassador - Designate of Sri Lanka to Lebanon paid a courtesy call on the President of the Beirut Chamber of Commerce at his office and held a warm and productive discussion on strengthening trade and commercial ties between Sri Lanka and Lebanon.

The President expressed interest in promoting Sri Lankan products among Chamber members and kindly offered to host a future Sri Lankan tea tasting and spice product exhibition at the Chamber premises. Both sides also discussed the possibility of an MoU between the Chambers of the two countries to enhance long-term business cooperation.

It was a great pleasure to meet with the Sri Lankan Honorary Consul for Syria, Mr. Moussallam AlDroubi.

We had a very productive and forward-looking discussion on strengthening bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Syria, with a focus on enhancing trade, investment, and business cooperation. We also explored promising opportunities for Sri Lanka’s participation in Expo 2026 in Sri Lanka and the Damascus International Fair 2026.

I look forward to working closely together to translate these discussions into tangible outcomes and to further strengthen the longstanding ties between our two countries.

Ambassador-Designate Mr. Anura Withanage Assumes Duties in Lebanon
The Ambassador-Designate of Sri Lanka to the Lebanese Republic, Mr. Anura Withanage, assumed duties on Monday, 6 April 2026, at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beirut.
Upon assuming duties, he addressed the Embassy staff and emphasized the importance of further strengthening bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Lebanon, while also enhancing services and support to the Sri Lankan community in Lebanon.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to the staff for their dedicated service and commitment during the recent challenging and uncertain period in Lebanon.
