Yesterday, while searching for a historic garden in which to host a future light and sound installation inspired by Saint Francis, I had the pleasure of visiting The Silk Museum in Bsous.

A long-standing partner of the Italian Cultural Institute in Beirut, the Museum has over the years welcomed several compelling exhibitions devoted to the art and heritage of silk, a tradition that forms one of the many cultural threads linking Italy and Lebanon.

Set amid the mountains, surrounded by unspoilt greenery, this remarkable place is a true jewel: intimate, poetic, and steeped in memory. Its beauty, history, and atmosphere make it an especially inspiring setting for artistic dialogue.

A visit full of promise and, perhaps, the beginning of something luminous to come.

Once again, this year, the Italian Cultural Institute of Beirut proudly joins Cabriolet festival’s journey through cinema, presenting three films as part of a shared celebration of storytelling, public space, and Mediterranean cultural dialogue with a selection of three Italian films.

A travelling open-air cinematic encounter, Cabriolet transforms streets, staircases, and public spaces across Lebanon into places of collective viewing and cultural exchange, bringing cinema from the north to the south and into the mountains.

Join us on June 5, 6, and 7 at the St. Nicolas Stairs in Gemmayzeh.

Free entrance.

The Face and the Threshold continues tonight with Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Uccellacci e Uccellini (1966).

In Pasolini’s film, the Franciscan imagination becomes a political and philosophical reflection on modernity itself. Through the parable of the two Franciscan friars preaching to the birds, the film reflects on the possibility of fraternity, on the difficulty of speaking across difference, and on what remains of the Franciscan message within the violence and contradictions of the modern world.

A deeply poetic and profoundly contemporary film.

In Beirut, we returned silent cinema to its original condition: image and music emerging together, within the same space, within the same breath.
We screened Il poverello di Assisi (1911), the first film ever made about Francis of Assisi, accompanied live by the Lebanese violinist Mario Rahi, who trained at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
What took place, however, was not a mere musical accompaniment.
The violin did not simply illustrate the images: it unsettled them, suspended them, wounded them, and carried them beyond their historical time. At moments it seemed to lend a voice to the bodies within the film; at others, it carved out a space of silence around the images, allowing their fragility to emerge with extraordinary force.
And so that cinema of 1911 ceased to belong to the past.
The processions, the faces, the Franciscan gestures born more than a century ago suddenly passed through Beirut with unexpected intensity, not as restored relics, but as living presence.
For one evening, cinema was not projected.
It was performed.

Today marked the opening of The Face and the Threshold. From tonight until May 12, we gather at Metropolis Art Cinema for a cycle of films dedicated to Francis.
Each screening offers a different way of approaching his figure, through the gaze of filmmakers who have returned to him across time.
