Meet Richard. A well loved resident at LCTW, he is a binturong with a prehensile tail, a love for climbing, and a very distinctive scent often compared to popcorn. He shares his space peacefully with two sun bears, showing just how adaptable and fascinating these animals can be.

In every sense, Richard is unforgettable.

On hot days, even our bears enjoy a refreshing hose down. It is a simple way to help them cool off, stay comfortable, and add a bit of enrichment to their day.

A recent rescue of four civets has kept us on our toes as always. They were brought to us after a forest fire, when local people found them and made sure they were brought somewhere safe.

Now in our care, the focus is on helping them recover, regain strength, and stay as wild as possible. With time and careful rehabilitation, we hope they will be ready to return to the forest in the near future.

Our staff and volunteers have been working hard to upgrade our gibbon “playground” and it looks incredible. New structures, new space, and better enrichment mean more opportunities for climbing, brachiating, and natural behaviors.

LCTW has always been a safe space for the animals in our care, but here on the edge of Phou Khao Khouay National Park, something incredible is happening. Wildlife is starting to feel safe here too, and sightings like this are becoming more and more common.

In many parts of Laos, forests can feel quiet, with few birds to see or hear. But take a walk through our forest and it comes alive. Calls echo through the trees, movement catches your eye, and little by little, nature is returning.

Not every story at LCTW has a happy ending.

Shortly after we rescued our first baby pangolin we got a call for another in the South of Laos.

This baby pangolin, for whom our team drove 24 hours during a rescue mission to southern Laos, sadly did not survive. Despite immediate emergency care and the full attention of our expert veterinary team, the young pangolin passed away shortly after arrival.

A post-mortem examination later revealed a pre-existing lung disease, highlighting how vital necropsies are in helping us understand each loss and improve the care we provide to future rescues.

Although this mission was costly, especially in fuel during the current crisis, we knew we had to try. Every animal in need deserves that chance, and we will always continue to answer that call.

Sadly, many animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade or illegal pet trade arrive too sick, injured, or traumatized to recover. But that will never stop us from trying.

Not every visit has to be rushed. At LCTW, we encourage you to slow down, take a seat, and truly soak in the surroundings. Spend time watching the animals, listening to the forest, and connecting with the space in a more meaningful way. Conservation isn’t just about seeing wildlife, it’s about understanding it and that takes time.
