Tick and Mosquito Prevention

Protect yourself and your family from ticks and mosquitoes this season! These pests can carry diseases like Lyme disease and West Nile virus, but a few simple steps can help keep you safe:
• Use EPA-registered insect repellent
• Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors
• Check for ticks after spending time outside
• Remove standing water around your home to reduce mosquito breeding

Common Symptoms from Tick Bites:
• Redness, swelling, or a small bump at the bite site
• Itching or irritation
• Sometimes a rash (such as the "bull’s-eye" rash seen in Lyme disease)
• Fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches (if a tick-borne illness develops)
• Joint pain or swelling (in some tick-borne diseases)
• In rare cases, allergic reactions or paralysis (tick paralysis)

Symptoms of Diseases Transmitted by Ticks:
• Lyme disease: fever, headache, fatigue, bull’s-eye rash, joint pain
• Rocky Mountain spotted fever: fever, headache, rash, muscle pain
• Ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis: fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue

Common Symptoms from Mosquito Bites:
• Red, itchy, raised bump at the bite site
• Swelling
• Mild pain or discomfort
• In some cases, blisters or bruising

Symptoms of Diseases Transmitted by Mosquitoes:
• West Nile virus: fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, rash (most cases are mild)
• Dengue: high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash
• Zika: fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis (red eyes)
• Malaria: fever, chills, sweats, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches

When to Seek Medical Attention:
• If you develop fever, rash, severe headache, joint pain, or other unusual symptoms after a tick or mosquito bite
• If the bite site shows signs of infection (increasing redness, swelling, pus)
• If you have trouble breathing, chest pain, or confusion

Ticks and mosquitoes can transmit serious diseases, so it’s important to monitor symptoms and seek medical care if needed.
