St. Kitts Spectrum Services Centre

The St. Kitts Spectrum Services Centre opened on September 4, 2018. It is supported by the Ministries of Health and Education in St. Kitts and Nevis as well as many community businesses and private stakeholders. Services provided at the Centre are free of cost! It is run by 4 amazing women who give their all to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; Director - Mrs. Josephine Claxton-Richardson, Consulting Director - Dr. Sheryl Rosin, Learning Specialist - Ms. Rose Monroe, and Secretary - Ms. Dounia Hughes. The Centre is the product of a 5 year crusade to bring awareness, education, and resources to individuals living in St. Kitts and Nevis. Dr. Sheryl Rosin began this project after she traveled to the Island of St. Kitts in 2013 and met a young child with Autism, Mathieu Marshall. Dr. Rosin spoke to the family about their child and they expressed concern for his future due to the lack of knowledge and services for individuals with Autism on the Island. From that moment on, Dr. Rosin and Mrs. Mauricer Marshall, Mathieu’s mother, brainstormed and developed a plan to bring services to the Island, not only for her child, but for others effected with the disorder. Mrs. Marshall and Dr. Rosin met with government officials and a plan was created to bring the necessary resources in order to help as many people with autism as possible. Dr. Rosin began by bringing awareness and education to locals and professionals around the Island via local media publications, workshops, and training related to Autism Spectrum Disorders. She created an Autism Cohort of 8 local woman working in the Ministry of Education in St. Kitts and trained them how to assess and treat Autism. Then, Dr. Rosin and the Autism Cohort offered free assessments to families in conjunction with the University of Medicine and Health Sciences - St. Kitts. This occurred for 4 years until a plan to develop a brick and mortar Centre to provide assessments and interventions was established. It took some time to find a space and to gather the necessary resources for the Centre, but Dr. Rosin and her Autism Cohort worked tirelessly to ensure the Centre would open and it finally did! On September 4, 2018, the St. Kitts Spectrum Services Centre was born.
