[ Celebrating the Academic Achievement of Two Cambodian Fellows]

The Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) is pleased to extend its sincere congratulations to two Cambodian health professionals who successfully graduated in August 2026 after completing their Master’s degree programs under the Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program in the Republic of Korea.

The two graduates are:
1. Mr. Ouk Seila
• University: Soon Chun Hyang University
• Degree: Master’s Degree in Health Policy
• Institution: Battambang Provincial Health Department

2. Mr. Suy Kasan
• University: Korea University College of Medicine
• Degree: Master of Science in Nursing (MSc in Nursing)

Their successful completion of postgraduate studies represents a significant milestone in their professional development and reflects their commitment to strengthening their expertise in the health sector.

Through the Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program, KOFIH supports Cambodian health professionals in pursuing advanced education and gaining international academic and professional experience. [Strengthening Maternal and Newborn Care Services in Battambang Province]

On 25 August 2026, the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) Cambodia Office, together with the National Maternal and Child Health Center (NMCHC), Battambang Administration Provincial Health Department (BTB APHD), and OD Moung Ruessei (OD MRS), conducted supervision activities at Prey Tralach and Prek Chik Health Centers in Battambang Province.

During the visit to Prey Tralach Health Center, NMCHC assessed the facility as a potential Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BeMONC) facility, focusing on key areas including human resources, infrastructure, accessibility and distance from the nearest referral hospital, and the availability of maternal and newborn health services. The team also reviewed whether the facility is able to perform the seven BeMONC signal functions through interviews, discussions with health care providers, and on-site inspection.

At Prek Chik Health Center, one of the fully functioning BeMONC facilities under BTB APHD, the joint team conducted supervision of service delivery, including the availability and provision of essential maternal and newborn health services, implementation of relevant procedures and protocols, and the challenges faced by health care providers in delivering quality emergency obstetric and newborn care. The team also discussed areas for improvement and the support needed to further strengthen the facility's capacity.

Through these supervision activities under the KOFIH EmONC project, the joint team aims to identify gaps, strengthen the capacity of health facilities, and ensure that women and newborns in Battambang Province have timely access to quality emergency maternal and newborn health services.

The Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) Cambodia Office is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Health Financing and Economics Course under the 2026 Dr Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program, held at Seoul National University (SNU), Republic of Korea, from 9 June to 14 August 2026.

Four fellows from the National Payment Certification Agency (NPCA) successfully completed the program:
1. Ms. KHEANG Sokuntheary
2. Ms. BUN Sovanliny
3. Mr. LAY Ngeab Chhong
4. Ms. LY Phagnanoch

During the fellowship, the participants strengthened their knowledge and skills in health financing and economics, while gaining valuable international learning and professional experiences through academic activities and knowledge exchange at Seoul National University.

The knowledge and skills acquired through the program are expected to support the fellows in their professional responsibilities and contribute to the continued strengthening of Cambodia’s health system.

KOFIH Cambodia Office extends its sincere congratulations to all four fellows on their successful completion of the fellowship and wishes them continued success in their professional careers.

KOFIH Cambodia is pleased to congratulate Mr. DOR Arunraksmey, Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, on successfully completing the 2026 Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program in Biomedical Engineering at Eulji University, Republic of Korea.

The fellowship program was conducted from 24 May to 8 August 2026, providing an opportunity to strengthen professional knowledge, technical skills, and practical experience in biomedical engineering.

We hope that the knowledge and experience gained through this program will contribute to further strengthening biomedical engineering services and healthcare quality in Cambodia.

On 6 August 2026, the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) Cambodia Office, under the Korea Official Development Assistance (K-ODA), proudly participated in the official inauguration of the Maternity Building at Preah Netr Preah Referral Hospital, Banteay Meanchey Province, in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Cambodia.

The ceremony was presided over by H.E. Prof. Chheang Ra, Minister of Health of Cambodia, and H.E. Kim Chang Yong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Constructed with financial support from KOFIH, the 50.2 m × 15 m Maternity Building was built at a cost of USD 398,395.98 (excluding medical equipment). The new facility will strengthen Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) services and improve access to quality maternal and newborn healthcare for communities in Banteay Meanchey Province.

During the ceremony, the Ministry of Health presented letters of appreciation and certificates of commendation to KOFIH and Mr. Song Yonggun to express gratitude for their steadfast support.

This achievement reflects the strong partnership between the Governments of Cambodia and the Republic of Korea through Korea Official Development Assistance (K-ODA), particularly KOFIH and KOICA, in supporting the strengthening of Cambodia's healthcare system and improving maternal and newborn health services.

KOFIH remains committed to working closely with the Ministry of Health and all partners to advance equitable, quality healthcare for the people of Cambodia.

[Training of Trainers on Mother Class Successfully Completed in Battambang Province]

On 16 June 2026, the Battambang Provincial Health Department conducted the 6th and final batch of the Training of Trainers on Mother Class planned for 2026. A total of 25 healthcare providers from selected health centers in OD Mong Russey, OD Thmar Koul, OD Battambang, and OD Sampov Loun participated in the training.
This session was honored by the presence of Ms. MIN Soyeong, Country Office Coordinator of the KOFIH Cambodia Office, and Dr. VOEURNG Bunreth, Director of the Battambang Provincial Health Department, whose support and encouragement highlighted the importance of strengthening maternal and newborn healthcare services in Cambodia.

Mother Class activities provide essential education on the following:

Cambodia-Korea Strategic Partnership Delivers Two NCD Centers in Pursat and Battambang, Marking KOFIH's 20th Anniversary

CAMBODIA, 9-10 June 2026 –The Royal Government of Cambodia and The Republic of Korea officially inaugurated NCD & Rehabilitation Centers at Pursat (9 June) and Battambang (10 June) Provincial Referral Hospitals. Both ceremonies were presided over by H.E. Prof. CHHEANG Ra, Minister of Health, and attended by H.E. KIM Chang Yong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, H.E. KIM Sungtai, Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Prof. HA Il-Soo, President of KOFIH, Dr. Marianna TRIAS, WHO Representative, provincial governors, and development partners.

Two Centers, One Mission, Strengthening NCD Care Across Northwest Cambodia

NCDs account for 64% of annual deaths in Cambodia, yet quality care outside the capital remains limited. Both centers bridge this gap through modern infrastructure, equipment, and capacity building. The Pursat center delivers NCD screening and management, while Battambang integrates rehabilitation service to help patients recovering from stroke and cardiac events rebuild strength and independence.

H.E. KIM Chang Yong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, remarked: "This modern facility stands as a meaningful symbol of the enduring friendship and Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Korea and the Kingdom of Cambodia. May it serve as a center of excellence for quality care and renewed hope for patients and their families."
H.E. Prof. CHHEANG Ra, Minister of Health, called on health staff and communities to take ownership of the facilities: "Doctors, nurses, and medical staff must maintain high ethical standards and treat patients warmly," urging civil society to promote NCD prevention and timely care-seeking.

KOFIH’s 20th Anniversary and the Legacy of Dr. Lee Jong-wook

The inaugurations mark KOFIH’s 20th Anniversary, founded in the spirit of Dr. Lee Jong-wook, the 6th WHO Director-General. Prof. HA Il-Soo reaffirmed this vision: "In this milestone year, we reaffirm our commitment to do the right things, in the right place, and in the right way. Beyond infrastructure, KOFIH's true investment is in the people and health systems of Cambodia."

Meanwhile, the ceremonies highlighted a government award session recognizing KOFIH’s contributions to non-communicable disease management, where the Korean staff of KOFIH Cambodia were honored with the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sahametrei in Pursat Province. In addition, the Ministry of Health presented an Acknowledgement Letter to KOFIH, expressing deep gratitude for their dedicated partnership.

[Opening of the 3rd Session of Training of Trainers on Mother Class in Battambang Province]

On 2 June 2026, the Battambang Administration Provincial Health Department officially opened the third session of the Training of Trainers on Mother Class for healthcare providers in Battambang Province, with support from the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Voeurng Bunreth, Director of Battambang APHD, and Mr. Song Yonggun, Country Representative of KOFIH Cambodia Office. The event was attended by trainers from Battambang APHD and healthcare providers from health centers in Battambang, Thmar Koul, and Sangke operational districts. A total of 24 participants joined the training.

In 2026, Battambang APHD plans to expand the Mother Class Program to 32 additional health centers across the province. To support this expansion, six training of trainers sessions will be conducted, with three participants from each health center: one health center chief and two midwives. Upon completion of the training, Mother Class materials and educational resources will be distributed to each health center to support local implementation.

The Mother Class Program was first introduced in Battambang Province in 2020, with an initial 16 health centers selected for implementation. Since then, the program has achieved remarkable success in improving awareness and knowledge of maternal and newborn health among pregnant women, mothers, families, and communities.

Mother Class activities provide essential education on antenatal care, danger signs during pregnancy, birth preparedness, safe delivery, postpartum and newborn care, breastfeeding, nutrition, and timely healthcare-seeking behaviors. These activities contribute significantly to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes while strengthening community engagement with healthcare services.

KOFIH Cambodia highly appreciates the strong leadership, commitment, and collaboration of the Ministry of Health, the National Maternal and Child Health Center, Battambang APHD, healthcare providers, and all partners involved in strengthening maternal and newborn health services. We are encouraged to see this successful initiative expanding to neighboring provinces, including Pursat, Pailin, and Banteay Meanchey, and gaining momentum toward broader implementation across Cambodia.
