🌐📚 UNESCO's 2026 opens on 8 September, under the theme "Education in the age of AI: Facts | Frictions | Frontiers.

AI is transforming education. During the week, ministers, policymakers, researchers, educators and students will unpack what counts as fact in an age of synthetic knowledge, the frictions AI is creating across classrooms and education systems, and the new frontiers emerging.

Cambodia will be represented at the table: H.E. Dr. Sann Vathana, Secretary of State at MoEYS Cambodia, will speak in the 8 September Ministerial Roundtable's segment on Procuring AI in Education: Deciding in the Public Interest and the Real Cost of Ownership, sharing Cambodia's experience on the global stage.

UNESCO continues to support Cambodia’s own digital transformation in education. Through our Strengthening Teacher Education Programmes in Cambodia (STEPCam), funded by Global Partnership for Education, UNESCO works with MoEYS to strengthen teachers' ICT and AI competencies. From developing Cambodia’s national ICT & AI Competency Framework for Teachers to leading the establishment of an EdTech Hub for research and innovation in digital education, UNESCO is committed to help ensure AI serves, rather than replaces, good teaching in the age of AI.

On 24 August, UNESCO Cambodia convened an Orientation Workshop on the Development of the Teaching Manual on Khmer Rouge History for Secondary Schools, bringing together the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre, the M-13 site, and partners from academia and civil society.

Since 2021, through the International Programme on Holocaust and Genocide Education (IPHGE), UNESCO has worked alongside national partners to strengthen how Khmer Rouge history is taught in Cambodian classrooms. That work took on renewed significance in 2025, when M-13, Tuol Sleng, and Choeung Ek were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List — recognition not only of these sites' historical weight, but of their living role in education today.

This workshop marks a further step forward: aligning the national curriculum, memorial-site learning, and the principles of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) through a standardized teaching manual — so that every teacher, in every province, has the tools to guide students through a difficult history with accuracy and sensitivity.

Participants spent the day exchanging perspectives on genocide education, peace education, and GCED, hearing from teachers' own classroom experiences, and developing recommendations to guide the manual's next steps.

On 17 August 2026, UNESCO joined ក្រសួងទេសចរណ៍ Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia, MoEYS Cambodia, and ក្រសួងការងារ និងបណ្តុះបណ្តាលវិជ្ជាជីវៈ at the Regional Polytechnic Institute of Techo Sen Siem Reap (RPITSSR) to disseminate our Basic Education Equivalency Programme -BEEP for tourism professionals, expanding access to education and skills for Cambodia's tourism workforce. Presided over by H.E. Pak Sokhom, Secretary of State of MoT, and H.E. Dy Rado, Deputy Provincial Governor of Siem Reap, the workshop brought together 162 participants, including government officials, development partners, trainers, tourism institutions and learners.

The workshop unpacked tourism workforce needs and BEEP's objectives, eligibility and certification pathways under the Decent Employment for Youth in Cambodia Programme Phase 3 (DEY III) framework, with BEEP learners and graduates sharing their own experience of balancing work and study while pursuing further education opportunities.

H.E. Pak Sokhom noted that expanding access to basic education equivalency is central to building a skilled and competent workforce for Cambodia's tourism industry, and called for continued collaboration between government, development partners and the tourism sector to keep the programme responsive to labour market needs.

UNESCO is saddened by the passing of Bou Meng, a survivor of S-21, at the age of 85.

As one of the few S-21 survivors, Bou Meng became an important voice of remembrance and education in Cambodia. Through decades of sharing his experiences, he gave a human voice to Cambodia’s painful history under the Khmer Rouge.

Bou Meng’s life and testimony highlight the need to preserve survivors’ stories while their voices are still with us. These personal accounts are part of Cambodia’s heritage and an enduring source of learning for future generations.

UNESCO honours Bou Meng’s legacy and the lasting contribution he made to remembrance, education and understanding in Cambodia.

📢 Call for proposals: The UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) will be co-hosted by UNESCO and the Government of Kenya in Nairobi from 13-15 January 2027 — and we want YOU at the table.

With less than four years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, and marking six years of the ESD for 2030 framework, the Conference will bring together ministers, youth leaders and stakeholders from around the world to generate renewed momentum for ESD and set the strategic direction beyond 2030.

We're now inviting organisations working on ESD to submit proposals to co-organise a thematic parallel session (up to 90 minutes) at the Conference. This is a real opportunity to help shape the direction of ESD for the next five years, spotlighting green skills, technology in learning, and social-emotional approaches to sustainability.

On 1 August, UNESCO joined H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of MoEYS Cambodia, on a joint visit to Thlok Chrov Primary School in Kampong Cham, to witness firsthand how our Early Grade Learning (EGL) programme is transforming the teaching and learning of Khmer and mathematics in the classrooms.

Since the start of our Strengthening Teacher Education Programmes in Cambodia (STEPCam) financed by Global Partnership for Education, our support to the EGL programme has expanded to over 440 schools, including having trained more than 5,400 teachers in Reading and 3,600 in Mathematics, benefitting over 280,000 students.

Through the EGL programme, UNESCO and the MoEYS have invested in the development of a comprehensive package of teacher guide, student exercise books and take-home workbooks for mathematics, focusing on promoting learning through interactive games and active engagement of students. Teachers were also trained on teaching and learning methodologies for Khmer and mathematics and received professional support from trained mentors to ensure that teachers are supported in becoming better and more confident. In the second phase of STEPCam, UNESCO has continued to support the Ministry in developing a new Mathematics Classroom Assessment Manual to further guide teachers in better supporting students with diverse learning needs.
As Cambodia and UNESCO mark 75 years of our partnership this year, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to continuing our longstanding support to the Ministry to strengthen the quality of education for every child in Cambodia.

Today, we commemorate the anniversary of the inscription of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register on 31 July 2009, recognizing their outstanding documentary heritage significance and global importance.

The archives preserve the stories, voices, and evidence of lives affected by the Khmer Rouge regime. By safeguarding this documentary heritage, we help ensure that future generations can learn from the past and contribute to building a more peaceful future.

Remembering is not only about learning from history; it is also about fostering understanding, promoting human dignity, and preventing atrocities from happening again.
As we mark this anniversary, UNESCO continues its commitment to preserving memory, advancing education, and promoting peace through documentary heritage.

Through the collaboration between UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), continued efforts have contributed to the preservation, digitization, and enhanced accessibility of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives, ensuring that this invaluable documentary heritage remains accessible for research, education, and remembrance.

The preservation of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives also reflects Cambodia’s broader efforts to safeguard memory and heritage. In 2025, the Cambodian Memorial Sites: From centres of repression to places of peace and reflection, including the former M-13 prison, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (former S-21 prison), and Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Together, these archives and memorial sites contribute to remembrance, historical reflection, and education for peace, ensuring that the lessons of the past continue to guide future generations.

✨ The Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with UNESCO and relevant stakeholders, officially launched the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve (TSBR) Strategic Plan 2026–2030 in Kampong Thom Province on 20 July 2026.

🌿🤝 The Strategic Plan provides a shared roadmap for strengthening governance, enhancing hydrological systems, conserving and restoring natural resources and biodiversity, improving waste management, promoting effective land use, and supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities across the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve. Developed through an inclusive process involving government institutions, provincial administrations, academia, development partners, civil society organizations, and local communities, the Plan reflects a collective commitment to safeguarding one of Cambodia’s vital ecological and socio-economic landscapes for present and future generations.
