On World Environment Day, we spotlight Tonle Sap. This is Cambodia’s largest freshwater lake and one of Southeast Asia’s most important ecosystems.

Supporting millions of people through fisheries, agriculture, and tourism, Tonle Sap is both an ecological treasure and an economic lifeline. Yet the lake faces growing environmental pressures that require coordinated action and long-term commitment.

During his recent visit to Cambodia, Mr. Marcel Silvius participated in a workshop focused on the sustainable future of the Tonle Sap region, engaging with partners and stakeholders working to address these challenges.

On June 4, 2026, a review meeting on the Country Planning Framework (CPF) 2026–2028 was held at the Ministry of Interior (MOI). The meeting was attended by H.E. Oum Mara, Secretary of State of the MOI, and Ms. Nathalie Andre, Country Representative of GGGI, joined by H.E. Chheng Vatanak, Under Secretary of State of the MOI and Deputy Head of NCDDS and H.E. Suon Dara, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Administration.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between GGGI, the Ministry of Interior, the General Department of Administration, and NCDDS in advancing sustainable urban development and climate resilience in Cambodia. Participants reflected on the previous engagements through the development of the Sustainable City Strategic Plan 2020–2030 for Cambodia’s seven secondary cities.

Discussions focused on GGGI’s upcoming CPF 2026–2028, which will guide efforts to scale climate investment and integrate sustainability into Cambodia’s development priorities. Key areas of focus include strengthening the financial and technology ecosystem, mobilizing climate finance, leveraging opportunities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and expanding private sector engagement.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of operationalizing the Country Platform and Climate Investment Planning and Mobilization Framework (CIPMF), developing investment-ready project pipelines, and supporting the advancement of green sustainable cities.

Both parties expressed their commitment to continued collaboration in supporting Cambodia’s transition toward a greener, more resilient, and sustainable future.

On May 28, 2026, a review meeting on the Country Planning Framework (CPF) 2026–2028 was held at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT). The meeting was attended by H.E Ros Vanna, Secretary of State of the MPWT, and Ms. Nathalie Andre, Country Representative of GGGI, joined by H.E. Samrangdy Namo, H.E Chao Sopheak Phibal, Mr. Nong Sambathvathna, Mr. Ankit Bhatt and Dr. Chea Eliyan.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between GGGI and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in advancing sustainable urban development and climate resilience in Cambodia. Participants reflected on the recent outputs delivered to support MPWT under the PWSSP project, which received financial backing from the EU and AFD, in collaboration with GRET, notably the Current Sewerage Situation in Cambodia, the Wastewater and Sludge Management Action Plan 2025-2035, the Sub-Decree on Conditions and Procedures for Sewerage Business Licensing and the faecal Sludge and Septage Management Policy 2025-2035.

Discussions focused on GGGI’s upcoming CPF 2026–2028, which will guide efforts to scale climate investment and integrate sustainability into Cambodia’s development priorities. Key areas of focus include strengthening the financial and technology ecosystem, mobilizing climate finance, leveraging opportunities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and expanding private sector engagement.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of role DEWATs for smaller on-site and decentralized sanitation systems in secondary / smaller cities and communities. It also discussed the development of sanitation master plans for these areas and the importance of capacity building, particularly in the operation and maintenance of sewerage infrastructure. These efforts aim to improve sanitation service delivery throughout Cambodia.

The CEMAT Energy Manager Training is now open for applications for its fourth cohort. Supported by the Asia Low Carbon Building Transition Project (ALCBT), the training is organised by the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), and conducted in collaboration with the CapCEE project.

Selected participants will gain practical knowledge in energy management, connect with professionals and experts in Cambodia’s energy sector, and have the opportunity to become a Certified Cambodia Energy Manager. A 100% subsidy will be provided for selected participants.

Over two days, the Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing Workshop on “Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, and Climate Risks” brought together representatives from government institutions, regulators, banks, and financial institutions to strengthen Cambodia’s sustainable finance ecosystem.

Co-organized by the Ministry of Environment, GGGI, and the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC), the workshop provided a platform to exchange knowledge and practical insights on climate risk management, sustainability disclosure, and the implementation of Cambodia’s Sustainable Finance Taxonomy in line with international standards.

As Cambodia continues to advance its green transition, strengthening the readiness and resilience of the financial sector will play a key role in mobilizing climate finance and supporting sustainable economic growth.

On 26 May 2026, the Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing Workshop under the theme “Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, and Climate Risks” commenced at Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh through the collaboration of the Ministry of Environment, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC).

During the opening ceremony, H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to advancing climate action and implementing Cambodia’s NDC 3.0 targets through strengthened climate finance and sustainable development efforts.

Mrs. Nathalie André, GGGI Cambodia Country Representative, emphasized that “climate risk is financial risk,” highlighting the importance of strengthening the capacity of banks and financial institutions in climate risk assessment, financial stress testing, and sustainability disclosure. She further noted that these measures are essential to enhancing the resilience of the financial system and expanding access to international climate finance.

The two-day workshop also focuses on strengthening the readiness of Cambodia’s banking and financial sectors to implement the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy and the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards in line with national priorities and international practices. These efforts aim to strengthen investor confidence and attract green financing sources in support of Cambodia’s green and sustainable future.

🚀 Dissemination Workshop: Energy Audit Findings, Green Financing Schemes, and Free Technical Assistance.

We recently hosted a dissemination workshop at the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) to share the transformative results of our building energy efficiency study. The workshop was presided over by H.E. Ros Salin, Secretary of State, MLMUPC, and attended by Ms. Nathalie Andre, Country Representative of GGGI Cambodia.

Our deep-dive audits of 250 buildings revealed that high-impact retrofits, such as Inverter ACs and LED lighting, can achieve up to 50% energy savings with payback periods of less than four years. Furthermore, simple behavioral changes, like adjusting AC setpoints and using daylights, can deliver an immediate saving at zero capital cost.

To turn these findings into reality, financial institutions are now offering tailored green financing with loan sizes ranging from $250,000 to $10 million. These schemes feature highly competitive interest rates between 5% and 7.25% p.a., with tenors extending up to 12 years to ensure long-term project viability.
