Today, Macheo Children’s Organisation, in partnership with BrighterMonday Kenya and Thiriving Generation Kirinyaga conducted an impactful entrepreneurship workshop in Matunda titled : The Reality Check: Understanding the Unemployment Crisis in Kenya and Uncovering Hidden Entrepreneurial Opportunities.
The training brought together community members, especially young people, to explore practical pathways to self reliance in the face of rising unemployment. Participants were encouraged to view the scarcity of formal employment not as a limitation but as an opportunity to leverage hands on skills such as plumbing, agriculture, electrical work, and other vocational trades as valuable assets for building sustainable livelihoods.
A key focus of the workshop was mindset transformation. Young people were challenged to shift from being job seekers to becoming job creators. Essential success habits were emphasized, including resilience in the face of challenges, continuous learning to improve skills, adopting an ownership mentality by taking initiative, and maintaining professionalism by treating even the smallest hustle like a global brand.
The session also highlighted the importance of starting where you are. Participants learned how to utilize available resources, including equipment found in schools and communities, to develop their first products or services. They were encouraged to tap into local networks, recognizing that family members, neighbours, classmates, and friends can become their first customers, investors, and ambassadors. The message was clear: start small, start now, rent tools before buying them, and reinvest profits back into the business.
Agribusiness emerged as a major opportunity, aligning closely with Macheo’s Family Economic Empowerment Programme. Discussions focused on horticulture, poultry farming, and value addition ventures such as turning milk into yoghurt or fruits into juice. Participants also explored the growing potential of digital marketing and how online platforms can help them reach wider markets and grow their businesses.
To support participants in taking immediate action, seeds were distributed at the end of the training to encourage farming and agribusiness activities. The seed distribution not only reinforced the practical lessons shared during the workshop but also provided a starting point for participants to begin generating income, improve household food security, and build sustainable livelihoods through agriculture.
Financial discipline was another critical area covered during the workshop. Young people were encouraged to cultivate a saving culture, avoid unnecessary debt, and establish emergency funds to provide financial security during difficult times.
The training also addressed health and wellbeing. Grace, a nurse from Gituamba Health Centre, educated participants on HIV/AIDS prevention methods and raised awareness about the risks facing young people today, emphasizing the importance of informed decision making and healthy lifestyles.
Through such initiatives, Macheo Children’s Organisation continues to empower young people and communities with practical skills, entrepreneurial mindsets, and opportunities that promote economic independence, resilience, and sustainable development.
