Today, the Tourism Department, students on attachment, and the Education Team conducted a park clean-up exercise at the old main gate and sewage area within Lake Nakuru National Park. The exercise aimed at enhancing environmental conservation, improving visitor experience, and promoting a clean and healthy habitat for wildlife.

During the activity, approximately 400 kilograms of litter were collected and properly disposed off .The waste mainly consisted of plastic materials and improvised fishing debris believed to have been used by illegal fishermen operating within the park.

In line with the Kenya Wildlife Service's strategic objective of enhancing conservation awareness, education, and public engagement, the Conservation Education Department at Lake Nakuru National Park successfully conducted seven in-house wildlife conservation education programmes this week, targeting institutions visiting the park on educational trips.

The programmes offered participants experiential learning opportunities covering key thematic areas, including wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection, ecosystem management, and the critical role of protected areas in advancing sustainable environmental conservation.

Learners were engaged through guided educational sessions, interpretive talks, and field observations, all designed to promote environmental stewardship and cultivate positive attitudes towards wildlife conservation among the youth and other stakeholders.

The initiative further deepened public appreciation of the park's ecological significance while reinforcing the broader KWS mandate of fostering conservation awareness through education and meaningful community engagement.

The Lake Nakuru National Park Education Department, Tourism Department, and students on attachment, in collaboration with the local community through Barut Gameview Association, successfully conducted a tree planting exercise at our Nderit Gate.

During the exercise, a total of 500 assorted indigenous tree seedlings were planted as part of ongoing ecosystem restoration and environmental conservation efforts. This initiative directly supports the Kenya Wildlife Service Strategic Plan, which emphasizes habitat restoration, climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and enhanced community participation in wildlife conservation.

The activity also contributes to the Government of Kenya’s national agenda of growing 15 billion trees by the year 2030, an ambitious vision aimed at increasing forest cover, restoring degraded landscapes, improving water catchment areas, and strengthening resilience against the effects of climate change.

Later, participants conducted a park clean-up exercise along the lake shores, demonstrating collective responsibility in maintaining a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment for wildlife, tourism, and future generations.

Together, we continue to champion environmental stewardship and sustainable conservation for the benefit of present and future generations.

Today the Tourism & Education Departments of Lake Nakuru and students on industrial attachment conducted an outreach program at Victorious Emmah Academy at Mzee Wanyama area of Nakuru East Ward, Nakuru East Sub-County, Nakuru County.

The school is located adjacent to the park fence near Nderit gate. During the exercise 500 exotic cypress (Cupressus lusitanica) seedlings were planted within the school compound at GPS coordinates 37M 0181576, UTM 9953627.

The program successfully reached a total of 120 pupils and 10 teachers. During the outreach session, the team engaged and inspired learners through an interactive conservation awareness program and a vibrant tree-planting exercise in support of the national target of achieving 15 billion trees by 2032.

The day was marked by great enthusiasm and active participation from the learners, who took part in planting and nurturing tree seedlings. The exercise served both as a practical environmental lesson and a celebration of conservation efforts. Through teamwork and commitment, the pupils demonstrated that the future of environmental conservation is in safe hands.

With guidance from the Lake Nakuru National Park team, the activity not only contributed to increasing tree cover but also instilled a strong sense of environmental responsibility among the young generation, proving that every tree planted today is a step closer to a greener tomorrow.

The topics covered included:
1. The mandate of Kenya Wildlife Service in conserving and managing Kenya’s wildlife and its habitat.
2. The role of pupils in wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship.
3. An overview of Lake Nakuru National Park.
4. Illegal fishing and the dangers of consuming fish from Lake Nakuru to the human health.
5. The importance of environmental conservation.
6. Human Wildlife conflict and the mitigation measures.

The outreach program was successful and impactful in promoting wildlife conservation awareness and environmental responsibility among the learners and teachers. The exercise was wrapped up with a bottle of soda and a piece of bread where the learners enjoyed it to the fullest. A well deserved token to these future leaders.
