14 HELD AS DCI BUST SUSPECTED COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY OPERATION IN NAIROBI

DCI detectives based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have arrested 14 suspects, among them three serving police officers and several foreign nationals, following a raid on a warehouse in the Vision Plaza Industrial Area, Nairobi, where suspected counterfeit US currency, fake gold bars and materials believed to be used in the production of counterfeit currency were recovered.

The operation, mounted on October 1, 2026, followed a complaint by a US national, Alkhalifi Ibrahim Hassan, and recorded at the JKIA Police Station.

The suspects, comprising Kenyan and foreign nationals from Nigeria, Cameroon and Sudan, as well as three police officers attached to the Security of Government Buildings (SGB), Uhuru Camp, were arrested after DCI officers searched the warehouse located behind Vision Plaza. Two officers were armed with Beretta pistols whereas their other accomplice was armed with a Chalbi pistol.

The suspects are, Anthony Oyieka Namani- Nigerian, Soulemanou- Cameroonian, Abbas Ibrahim Mohamed- Sudanese, George Kinyanjui, Geofrey Omondi Juma, William Kimolo, Solomon Ndeda, Raphael Wayaya, Kevin Barasa, Erick Honla, Maureen Ogany, Cpl Joseph Otenyo Okimba, APC Douglas O. Odira and APC Felix Oyawa Odhiambo

A total of 31 sealed black pallets were recovered. Further scrutiny established that three of the pallets contained 156 bundles of US$100 notes suspected to be counterfeit, while the remaining pallets contained cement.

Detectives also recovered a plastic box containing 65 pieces of gold bars suspected to be fake; a box containing assorted chemicals suspected to be intended for the manufacture of counterfeit currency; and another box containing assorted papers printed with US dollar notes.

Other exhibits recovered included a black bag containing 13 bundles of US$100 notes suspected to be counterfeit, assorted aluminium seals, seven cartons of UN blue plastic seals, two Kenya Revenue Authority reflector jackets, two empty suitcases, a green pallet-strapping roll, a padlock cutter and a hacksaw.

The scene was processed and the exhibits secured as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the suspected counterfeit currency operation and the identities and respective roles of those involved.

The suspects are currently assisting detectives with ongoing investigations, with appropriate legal action to follow upon completion of the inquiry.

What looked like an ordinary homestead in Muthua, Kabete, was being used as a clandestine juice factory, until a vigilant member of the public blew the whistle.

Acting on the information, detectives from Kabete Police Station responded swiftly. At the homestead, they found two men, Alex Mwaruta and James Munala Inyangala in the middle of producing counterfeit juice. Both were arrested on the spot.

A search of the homestead then peeled back the layers of the operation, revealing what appeared to be a fully fledged counterfeiting setup. Detectives recovered approximately 1,400 filled 200ml and 300ml bottles of suspected counterfeit juice, alongside 56 cartons of empty bottles, five packets of bottle tops, two blue drums and three assorted-colour basins.

Also recovered were office glue, rubber stamps and ink, assorted stickers, an expired certificate authorising the use of the Standardisation Mark for a well-known juice brand, as well as assorted powdery and colourless substances packed in polythene bags in 50-gram portions and in 200ml and 300ml bottles.

The scene was subsequently processed by detectives from the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), while the recovered items were secured as exhibits.

The two suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

Counterfeit beverages produced in unregulated and unhygienic environments can expose unsuspecting consumers to serious health risks. Such illegal operations also undermine legitimate manufacturers and deprive the government of rightful tax revenue.

The DCI remains relentless in trailing down counterfeiters and dismantling the networks behind the trade.

It's the duty of RDU personel to ensure that areas covered by them is safe for locals and investors , RDU has several operational bases in the coastal region, in Tana River at Tarasa , in Lamu we have Nyatha and Mpeketoni .Rdu has recently opened its first operation base in Kitui County at Katumba

Today, Lamu County hosts a significant milestone in Kenya's investment journey as the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery brings together leaders, investors, business representatives and guests from Kenya and beyond.

As the country welcomes this landmark investment, officers of the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) are deployed alongside other security agencies to provide a safe, secure and orderly environment for the event.
For us, security is not only about responding to threats. Security is about creating an environment where people can do business, communities can prosper and investments can thrive.
