The CEO, NETFUND, Mr. Samson Toniok, today participated in the CEPREC Kenya International Summit 2026 High-Level Policy Roundtable in Nairobi, where he delivered a keynote address on “Financing Community-Led Clean Energy Innovation: Empowering a Sustainable and Circular Future.” During his address, he called for stronger financing systems that support locally driven clean energy solutions, enabling community innovations to grow into sustainable enterprises that create jobs, improve livelihoods, and advance Africa's clean energy transition.

Drawing on the success of Magiro Hydro Electric Power Limited, a green innovation supported by NETFUND through its Green Innovations Awards programme, Mr. Toniok highlighted how catalytic funding, incubation, technical support, and strategic partnerships transformed a community-based innovation into a thriving clean energy enterprise. From a modest beginning, the project has grown to serve hundreds of households, businesses, schools, health facilities, and industries, demonstrating the transformative power of investing in local ideas and community-led innovation.

He emphasized that Africa's clean energy future depends not only on technology but also on the financing, partnerships, skills, and institutions that enable innovation to deliver meaningful benefits to communities, while placing local people at the centre of the transition as innovators, entrepreneurs, and beneficiaries.

NETFUND held a progress and forward-planning meeting with Dr. Peter Scheren, Lake Naivasha Project Supervisor, WWF-US, the GEF Implementing Agency for the project, and Mr. Kevin Gichangi, Manager, Kenya Riftlake Landscape at WWF-K and WWF Technical Lead for the Lake Naivasha Basin Project.

The engagement provided an opportunity to take stock of progress made under the Lake Naivasha Basin Ecosystem-Based Management Project, review key achievements, assess immediate priorities for the next one and a half years, and align on the way forward.

Discussions also looked beyond the current project period, focusing on how to sustain investments, strengthen partnerships and build on the gains already made to ensure lasting impact beyond the project lifecycle.

A key takeaway was clear; sustainability must be built into today's achievements to secure a lasting future for the Lake Naivasha Basin and the communities and ecosystems that depend on it.

NETFUND Strengthens Strategic Partnership with CABI INTERNATIONAL

The National Environment Trust Fund ( NETFUND) hosted a delegation from CABI International for a strategic engagement aimed at advancing the implementation of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and translating the partnership into tangible areas of collaboration.

The CABI delegation comprised Mr.Daniel Karanja, Regional Director, CABI Kenya; Mr. Harrison Rware, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Specialist & Landscape Specialist; and Ms. Phyllis Ombonyo, Chief Officer, Member Country and Partnership

The discussions focused on aligning institutional priorities and identifying opportunities for joint implementation across key areas, including Nature-based Solutions and climate resilient initiatives under the NPC Programme, Adaptation Fund interventions, joint proposal development and project design, and the upcoming Just Transition Training under the CIF NPC.

The engagement provided a platform to establish a clear implementation pathway, strengthen technical collaboration, and leverage the respective expertise and networks of both institutions to advance shared environmental and climate objectives.

NETFUND looks forward to deepening this partnership and converting the commitments under the MoU into impactful, scalable and sustainable interventions that contribute to Kenya's environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

NETFUND hosted the National Project Coordination Unit (NPCU) Environmental and Social (E&S) Team under the Kenya Watershed Services Improvement Project (KEWASIP) for a coordination meeting aimed at enhancing project implementation and compliance with Environmental and Social safeguards. During the engagement, both teams reviewed implementation progress, discussed key roles and responsibilities, identified challenges, and agreed on priority actions to strengthen project delivery.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of collaboration, stakeholder engagement, effective grievance redress mechanisms, and timely reporting in achieving sustainable watershed management outcomes. The Chief Executive Officer of the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) received a courtesy call from Dr. Emmanuel Kombe Nzai, Chairperson of Kenya Vision 2030 and the Jumuiya ya Pwani Caucus. Dr. Nzai was accompanied by a technical team from the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), led by Mr. Irungu Wagema and Ms. Wendi Owade.

The meeting provided a platform for discussions on potential areas of collaboration between NETFUND and the Jumuiya ya Pwani Caucus aimed at advancing environmental conservation initiatives within Kenya's coastal region. Discussions focused on strengthening resource mobilization efforts to support marine conservation and environmental sustainability programmes across the coastal counties.

Participants explored innovative financing mechanisms for conservation initiatives, with particular emphasis on sustainable capital-raising approaches to enable coastal counties to finance and implement marine and environmental conservation projects. NETFUND and TakaTaka Ni Mali Sign MoU to Advance Circular Economy

NETFUND has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TakaTaka Ni Mali, a leading private-sector organization advancing the circular economy agenda in Kenya, marking a significant step towards strengthening collaboration in sustainable waste management and resource recovery.

Through this partnership, NETFUND and TakaTaka Ni Mali will work together to mobilize resources, provide technical assistance, and develop bankable circular economy projects capable of attracting public, private, and development financing. The collaboration will leverage the strengths, expertise, and networks of both institutions to identify investment opportunities, support project development, and drive innovative solutions to emerging waste management challenges.
