Last week, Sweden’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Håkan Åkesson, and Marie Ottosson, Head of Kenya Development Cooperation, together with UNHCR, visited Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement in Turkana County—one of the world’s longest-standing refugee-hosting regions and home to more than 317,000 refugees and asylum seekers.

The visit reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s transition from a camp-based refugee model towards inclusive, sustainable and dignified solutions through the SHIRIKA Plan.

While challenges remain, Sweden is committed to working alongside the Government of Kenya, UNHCR and local partners to advance refugee inclusion, strengthen national systems and promote greener, more inclusive economic growth.

Refugees are not just beneficiaries of support—they are entrepreneurs, innovators and contributors to local economies and communities. Investing in their self-reliance benefits everyone.

The Embassy of Sweden was pleased to join CREAW Kenya for the launch of its new Strategic Plan 2026–2030: Advancing Gender Equality, Justice and Dignity for Women and Girls. 💜

The strategy sets out a vision for a Kenya where every woman and girl can live free from violence, exercise her rights, make informed decisions about her life and body, and reach her full potential.

At a time when gender equality is under pressure and development financing is decreasing, Sweden highlighted that every shilling, every krona and every grant carries a responsibility: to reach as many women and girls as possible and contribute to lasting change.

Sweden remains committed to standing with CREAW and the wider women’s movement in Kenya.

Sweden's Ambassador to Kenya, Håkan Åkesson, joined students, families and teachers to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2026 at the Swedish School in Kenya. 🎓

Founded in 1968, the Swedish School in Nairobi is one of the longest-standing examples of the close connection between Sweden and Kenya.

The graduates represent an important part of this relationship. Through their education, they have learned across cultures, built friendships across borders and gained perspectives from both countries.

Educational exchanges such as this help foster understanding, curiosity and mutual respect - bringing our countries closer together.

Warm congratulations to the graduates, their families and teachers on this important milestone. We wish the Class of 2026 every success in the future!

From Konza Technopolis to Makueni County, our recent visit highlighted how digital infrastructure and reliable data go hand in hand.

At Konza, we saw how technology and innovation are helping shape Kenya’s digital future. In Makueni, we met the statisticians whose work ensures that decisions are based on facts, evidence and reliable data.

For over 11 years, Sweden has supported statistical cooperation between Statistics Sweden and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, helping strengthen data quality, transparency and accountability.

Together, digital innovation and trusted statistics create a stronger foundation for sustainable development.

Last week’s visit to Kakuma Refugee Camp and the Kalobeyei Settlement offered a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when humanitarian efforts are linked with long-term development solutions.

From schools and civil registration offices to markets, businesses and refugee-led organisations, we saw how access to education, documentation, livelihoods and economic opportunities is helping refugees and host communities build more resilient futures.

For Sweden and Sida, this reflects the strong link between migration and development. Supporting people to become self-reliant, participate in local economies and contribute to their communities is essential for creating sustainable solutions to displacement. Access to documentation, education and decent livelihoods not only improves lives—it also strengthens social cohesion and local economic development.

The SHIRIKA Plan demonstrates how government leadership, community engagement and strong partnerships can help turn displacement into opportunity. It is encouraging to see this vision taking shape on the ground in Kakuma and Kalobeyei.

Sweden remains committed to supporting Kenya, , refugee-led organisations and other partners in advancing inclusive and sustainable solutions that promote dignity, opportunity and shared prosperity for both refugees and host communities.

A great and inspiring week at Sustainable Manufacturing Week in Nairobi.

A key highlight was the launch of the Industry Clean Tech Platform (ICTP) — part of EELA (Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa), funded by Sweden, implemented by UNIDO and hosted by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM). The platform will help connect industry with clean technologies, expertise and financing to speed up the green transition.

We also had the opportunity to visit Ngorongo Tea Factory and discuss practical solutions for energy efficiency, renewable thermal energy and cleaner production — all essential to strengthening competitiveness in Kenya’s industrial sector.

It’s clear that strong partnerships and concrete solutions are what will drive a more sustainable and competitive future.

🏠 Building Shelter, Dignity, and Resilience Together

Climate change, displacement, and urbanization are putting growing pressure on communities across the region. In Kenya alone, more than 800,000 refugees and asylum-seekers need support.

💡 But solutions are taking shape.

With a live demonstration of a Relief Housing Unit at the Swedish Embassy we showed how partnerships and locally grounded solutions can strengthen humanitarian response. Modular, locally adapted shelters can support people affected by disaster and displacement—already making a difference in communities like Tana River County.

Key takeaways:
➡️Effective measures are built with communities— adapted to local conditions, materials, and knowledge
➡️Partnerships across government, humanitarian, private sector, and donor communities are critical to scaling sustainable solutions

The event was co-hosted with the Swedish non-profit Better Shelter, Habitat for Humanity Kenya and Save the Children Sudan.

🤝 Together, we are working toward a future where everyone has access to safe, dignified shelter—and the opportunity to rebuild with resilience.
