PUBLIC ADVISORY FOR OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS (OFWs) TRANSITING THROUGH ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi reminds all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) transiting through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, Ethiopia to observe Ethiopian immigration regulations and ensure that their travel and employment arrangements are properly documented.

If you are only transiting through Addis Ababa Airport:
** Passengers who remain within the international transit area (airside) of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport generally do not require an Ethiopian visa.
** Ensure that you hold a confirmed onward ticket and the necessary travel documents, including any visa required for your final destination, before departure.
** Ethiopian Airlines may provide hotel accommodation for eligible passengers with connecting flights and transit times/layover of more than 8 hours and up to 24 hours. Airline-provided accommodation or a transit facility should not, however, be understood as a blanket authorization to enter or remain in Ethiopia beyond the period permitted by Ethiopian immigration authorities.

If you enter Ethiopia for purposes other than authorized transit:
** Any passenger who leaves the international transit area and seeks to enter Ethiopia must hold the appropriate Ethiopian visa or other immigration authorization applicable to the purpose and duration of stay.
** Do not leave the airport based solely on verbal assurances from recruiters, employers, or intermediaries that an employment visa or onward travel documentation will be processed after arrival.
** If you intend to enter Ethiopia for any purpose other than transit, including employment, you must obtain the appropriate authorization in advance from the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Service, before travel.

Observe your authorized period of stay:
** Foreign nationals who remain in Ethiopia beyond their authorized period may be subject to administrative penalties under Ethiopian law. Under Council of Ministers Immigration Amendment Regulation No. 559/2024, Article 40.2 (Administrative Penalty), overstaying may result in a USD 3,000 administrative penalty, in addition to a USD 30 daily fine for each day of unauthorized stay.

Philippine Embassy joins ASEAN Missions in Nairobi to celebrate 59 years of ASEAN unity

NAIROBI, 11 August 2026 — The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi joined fellow ASEAN Missions in Kenya in celebrating the 59th ASEAN Day on 8 August 2026 at a reception hosted by the Embassy of Indonesia.

The celebration brought together Kenyan officials, members of the diplomatic corps,including representatives of ASEAN dialogue partners and countries to which the ASEAN missions in Nairobi are accredited, representatives of the United Nations, members of the Filipino and wider Southeast Asian diaspora, and other Kenyan stakeholders.

In his remarks, H.E. Ambassador T.B.H. Witjaksono Adji, Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Nairobi (ACN) for 2026, underscored ASEAN’s diversity as a source of strength and stressed the importance of resilience and partnerships in navigating emerging regional and global challenges.

He highlighted the Philippines’ 2026 ASEAN Chairship under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together,” noting its emphasis on strengthening ASEAN unity and partnerships in advancing peace and stability, economic integration, sustainable growth, resilience, and people-centred community-building amidst the challenging global environment.

He further cited the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), whose principles of mutual respect, non-interference, and peaceful settlement of disputes continue to guide ASEAN’s engagement with its partners, including with African states.

Guest of Honour Mr. Mustafa Ibrahim, Deputy Director General for Political and Diplomatic Affairs at Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, highlighted ASEAN’s experience in regional cooperation and its relevance to the East African Community (EAC), particularly in fostering dialogue and closer integration among diverse member states.

The reception featured Southeast Asian cuisine, with the Philippine Embassy contributing Filipino favourites including chicken adobo, beef tapa, pancit, turon, and sago’t gulaman. Other ASEAN missions showcased dishes from across the region, including pad thai, mee goreng, and bakso.

The ASEAN Committee in Nairobi (ACN) is an ASEAN third-country committee in Kenya comprising the Heads of Mission of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. END

Team Philippines finishes in the top 10 at the 2026 World Schools Debating Championship in Kenya

NAIROBI, 28 July 2026 – Team Philippines placed ninth overall among more than 70 participating teams at the 2026 World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC), held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 14 to 24 July 2026.

The Philippine delegation secured six wins in the preliminary rounds to advance to the championship elimination stage, finishing among the world’s top 10 teams in the premier international debating competition for secondary school students. Canada emerged as the overall champion of the 2026 edition.

PH Embassy Visits Square Pharmaceuticals Kenya, Exploring Potential for Healthcare Manufacturing Cooperation

On 17 July 2026, the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi joined representatives of the diplomatic missions of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and Somalia on a visit to Square Pharmaceuticals Kenya EPZ Ltd. (SPKEL) in Athi River, Machakos County. The visit highlighted Kenya’s growing pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, with SPKEL, a subsidiary of Bangladesh’s largest pharmaceutical company, Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, producing generic medicines for Kenya and East Africa. The engagement also provided insights into potential areas for collaboration in pharmaceuticals, healthcare manufacturing, and related sectors, supported by Kenya’s role as a gateway to the East African market of more than 300 million people.
