The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) is honoured to have received the USAWA Award 2026 from the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) in recognition of its Excellent Performance in Gender and Disability Mainstreaming. The Council was also recognized for adherence to the Constitutional Two-Thirds Gender Principle and the 5% Disability Quota in Board and Top Management.
The award was received on behalf of the Council by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Michael Munene, accompanied by Mr. Tsuma, Kilifi County Disability Services Officer, during the NGEC Mashinani County Leadership Engagement held in Kilifi County.
The event was presided over by H.E. Flora Chibule, Deputy Governor of Kilifi County, representing H.E. Gideon Mung'aro, Governor of Kilifi County, and attended by Hon. Rehema Dida Jaldesa, Chairperson of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), the Vice Chairperson, Commissioners of the Commission, and Dr. Purity Ngina, Chief Executive Officer of NGEC, alongside national and county government leaders, development partners, civil society organizations and other stakeholders committed to advancing equality, inclusion and accessibility.
The occasion also marked the launch of four landmark reports on the status of equality, inclusion and accessibility in Kenya. Of particular significance was the Accessibility Audit Report, whose findings reinforce the need to eliminate barriers that continue to hinder access to services, opportunities and participation by persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
NCPWD recognizes the important role played by NGEC in promoting equality, non-discrimination and inclusion across all sectors of society. The Commission's work strongly complements the Council's mandate of coordinating, regulating and promoting disability inclusion, accessibility and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. This shared commitment is critical in advancing a Kenya where every person can participate fully and effectively in social, economic and political life.
This recognition reaffirms NCPWD's commitment to implementing the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025, strengthening accessibility and universal design, promoting inclusive governance, and advancing the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities across the country.
The Council appreciates NGEC for this recognition and looks forward to continued collaboration with national and county governments, development partners, organizations of persons with disabilities and other stakeholders in building a more inclusive, accessible and equitable Kenya where no one is left behind.
