𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐂𝐀𝐊'𝐬 𝐂𝐒𝐑 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐥𝐠𝐞𝐲𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐰𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲

When the devastating Chesongoch landslide struck Elgeyo Marakwet County in October 2025, the Competition Authority of Kenya committed to support the affected community. Yesterday, we kept that promise.

Flagged off by Director General Hon David Kemei Rotuk and H.E. Governor Wisley Rotich at the County Headquarters in Iten, a team of 30 CAK staff members travelled to the Chesongoch area to deliver critical food and learning supplies to four schools serving 750 learners.

The Authority delivered 6,950 kilograms of food supplies (maize, beans, and rice) as well as 1,102 KICD-approved textbooks, 800 exercise books, 587 packs of sanitary pads, as well as other materials.

The beneficiary schools were:

Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Kemei underscored the deeper purpose behind the initiative: while CAK's core mandate is safeguarding competition and protecting consumers, we recognize that sustainable economic progress begins with empowered and educated communities.

"I commend the teachers and school administrators who have continued to provide guidance, stability and hope to learners during this difficult period. Your dedication has ensured that learning continues despite the challenges faced by the Chesongoch community," said Mr. Kemei.

H.E. Governor Rotich expressed his gratitude to the Authority for the CSR gesture, noting the significance of such partnerships in supporting communities, especially those affected by disasters, to rebuild their lives.

The Authority believes that just as fair competition creates a level playing field for businesses, access to quality education creates a level playing field for our children to thrive.

We are grateful to the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet for their partnership, and to the teachers, administrators, parents and students of the Chesongoch area for their remarkable resilience in the face of challenging circumstances.

Speaking on Day 2 of CAK's Inaugural Research Conference on Competition and Consumer Welfare, Director-General Mr. Kemei David made a compelling case for why competition enforcement is, at its core, a matter of everyday consequence.

The DG was clear: the Authority's work is not simply about stopping anti-competitive conduct — it is about improving the lives of ordinary Kenyans. When markets function well, consumers enjoy lower prices, better quality, greater choice, and access to innovation.

Small businesses find room to participate and grow. Investor confidence rises. Productivity improves. And the economy becomes more dynamic and inclusive for all.

Competition enforcement, in that sense, is not a technical exercise. It is an economic and social imperative.

Day 1 of the Authority’s Research Conference on Competition and Consumer Welfare also gave us some powerful remarks from Board Chairman, Mr. Charles W. Mahinda, MBS, - and there were plenty to take note of.

On enforcement, the Chairman was unequivocal: the Authority has moved from soft to hard enforcement, and that is now an explicit Board position, especially for repeat offenders.

Mr. Mahinda noted that over the past few years, the Authority has successfully dismantled four cartels that were hurting consumers, stunting economic growth, and locking SMEs out of opportunity.

And as contraventions have increased, the Authority has kept pace. He specifically highlighted our recent investment in a forensic lab which he noted will “enhance our analysis of evidence and data and enable us to draw more comprehensive, indisputable inferences in our enforcement work.”

On the legislative front, Mr. Mahinda called on policymakers present to champion its fast-tracking of the ongoing amendment to the Competition Act which seeks to expand the Authority’s enforcement frontiers.

Dr. Chris Kiptoo Principal Secretary for the National Treasury, was the chief guest at the Competition Authority of Kenya's (CAK) Inaugural Research Conference on Competition and Consumer Welfare, which opened on 4th June 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In his address, Dr. Kiptoo underscored the centrality of competition to Kenya's broader economic agenda, stating that competition is not merely a regulatory concept but a powerful economic policy instrument that directly shapes investment decisions, employment outcomes, the cost of living, and the long-term sustainability of public finances.

The Principal Secretary also made reference to the recently published OECD Peer Review of Kenya's competition enforcement framework, describing it as an evidence-based diagnosis of the challenges and opportunities facing the CAK. He commended the Authority for the steps already taken to domesticate and action the Review's recommendations.

Dr. Kiptoo further lauded the CAK's structured partnership with the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), identifying the elimination of bid rigging as among the most fiscally consequential areas requiring collective and urgent intervention.

He called on both agencies to deepen their collaboration in addressing persistent market distortions, particularly those that disenfranchise small and medium-sized enterprises, emphasizing that taxpayers deserve full value for public money spent.

Day 1 of the Authority's Research Conference on Competition and Consumer Welfare is underway.

The two-day event, themed, Promoting Competition and Consumer Welfare in Globalised & Dynamic Markets, brings together policymakers, researchers, legal practitioners, and industry leaders to deliberate on critical issues shaping Kenya's competitive landscape and consumer protection frameworks.

The Conference address three high-level pillars: competition policy development and implementation, competition and consumer protection in digital markets, and regional cooperation in competition and consumer welfare regulation.

The Authority’s Director General David Kemei joined Head of Public Service, Mr. Felix Koskei, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Energy & Petroleum Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, and other leaders at an interdenominational prayer day at Kapsigilai Girls' Senior School in Chemase, Nandi County.

The day was dedicated to congratulating students who sat for their KCSE examinations in 2025 and praying for the 2026 Form Four candidates as they prepare for their national examinations later this year.

The gathering brought together students from 10 secondary schools in Chemase Zone and beyond in a show of community, faith, and shared purpose.

Top-performing students from the 2025 KCSE were recognized and celebrated, while learning materials were distributed to support schools in the area, reaffirming the collective commitment to improving educational outcomes in the region.

The event was a timely reminder that academic excellence and moral grounding go hand in hand. Students were encouraged to remain disciplined, focused, and purposeful in their studies.
