At the quiet Mwireri Police Post in Laikipia East Sub-County, Senior Sergeant (S/Sgt) Joseph Maigua begins each day with the same sense of purpose that has guided him for over three decades. For him, policing is more than a profession—it is a calling rooted in service, integrity and faith.

Born and raised in Nyeri County, S/Sgt Maigua joined the National Police Service on 30 August 1989. He underwent his basic recruit training at the National Police College, Embakasi 'A' Campus, formerly the Administration Police Training College (APTC), before embarking on a journey that would span 37 years of dedicated public service.

His first deployment took him to Wajir County in the North Eastern Region in 1990, where he served for eight years under challenging conditions. He would later serve in Laikipia, Nandi and several other parts of the country, steadily building a reputation as a dependable and disciplined officer committed to safeguarding lives and property.

Currently, S/Sgt Maigua serves as the Officer Commanding Mwireri Police Post, a constituent post under Umande Police Station in Laikipia East Sub-County, Laikipia County. His experience has seen him handle a wide range of cases, including theft, assault and defilement, while fostering strong partnerships with the local community through community policing initiatives.

"The greatest reward in this profession is seeing people live peacefully and knowing that you have played a part in keeping them safe," says S/Sgt Maigua.

Throughout his career, he has risen from the rank of Police Constable to Senior Sergeant—a journey defined by resilience, discipline, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to duty. Remarkably, he has maintained an exemplary service record throughout his career.

Away from the uniform, S/Sgt Maigua is a devoted husband and father, and a committed member of the Akurinu Christian faith. His white turban, a symbol of purity and dedication to God, reflects a faith that has remained central to his life and service.

"My faith reminds me to serve with humility, honesty and compassion. Every day I wear this uniform, I remember that I am accountable both to God and to the people I serve," he reflects.

Colleagues describe him as calm, approachable and deeply committed to mentoring younger officers. His wealth of experience, coupled with his humility, has earned him the respect of both fellow officers and members of the public.

As he marks 37 years of distinguished service, S/Sgt Maigua continues to demonstrate that true leadership is measured not only by rank but also by consistency, integrity and selfless service to others.

The Public Service Superannuation Fund (PSSF) continues to enhance pension awareness and promote effective retirement planning among disciplined service personnel.

During a sensitisation exercise held today, 11 August 2026, at the National Police College, Embakasi "B" Campus, PSSF delegates engaged the recruits on the importance of early and informed retirement planning, while also guiding serving officers on how to access their pension statements.

The highly interactive sessions emphasised the importance of members taking an active role in managing their pension journey by regularly checking their contributions and keeping their personal and beneficiary information up to date.

Through the PSSF Member Self-Service (MSS) portal, members can conveniently access their pension information from the comfort of their homes or workplaces, and complete their enrolment and beneficiary forms via the portal at: mss.pssf.go.ke.

A hidden distillation operation in Dirubi Village, Kisumu County, has been disrupted following a targeted police operation that exposed the manufacture of illicit brews and resulted in the arrest of two suspects.

Police officers from Maraboi Police Post, working alongside National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), proceeded to the homestead of a suspected illicit brew manufacturer, where they found two suspects engaged in the production of illegal alcohol.

The operation led to the recovery of approximately 100 litres of kangara, 60 litres of chang’aa, and distillation apparatus.

The suspects were escorted to Maraboi Police Post, where they remain in custody pending arraignment as investigations continue. The exhibits were secured at the same facility.

This operation underscores the National Police Service’s continued action against the manufacture, distribution and consumption of illicit brews.

Officers based at Bomet Police Station, acting on a tip-off from members of the public, conducted a coordinated night ambush in Chemomul Village, Bomet Central Sub-county, and successfully recovered a large consignment of suspected cannabis sativa.

During the operation, officers intercepted a red Boxer 100 motorcycle carrying a rider, a pillion passenger and a suspicious sack. When challenged by the police to stop, the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and the luggage, fleeing into the darkness. A subsequent search of the abandoned sack revealed 249 rolls of suspected cannabis sativa.

The officers secured both the narcotics and the motorcycle (registration number KMGX 534N) as exhibits and launched a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The National Police Service commends the local administration and members of the public for their continued cooperation and for sharing vital information in the ongoing fight against illicit brews and drugs.

The National Police Service (NPS) has stepped up efforts to enhance continuous professional development among its officers through the ongoing NPS E-Learning Sensitisation Programme, Phase II – a five-day exercise that commenced yesterday, 10 August 2026, across various regions of the country.

The programme, led by the NPS Director of Training and Research, Mr. Aljir Hassan, AIG, is part of the Service’s broader efforts to equip officers with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to respond effectively to the evolving demands of modern policing and to enhance service delivery to the public.

Yesterday's sensitisation exercises were conducted in Lamu, Trans Nzoia and Busia counties, as well as in Nyahururu, Malaba and Nanyuki, bringing together officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS), the Administration Police Service (APS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Speaking during the sensitisation exercise, the Director of Training and Research emphasised the Inspector General’s vision for police modernization and professional training, noting the importance of ensuring that officers across all cadres are equipped with relevant, up-to-date knowledge and skills.

He further encouraged officers to embrace technology as an important enabler of modern training and professional development, allowing them to acquire new knowledge and competencies while continuing to undertake their day-to-day policing responsibilities.

The E-Learning Sensitisation Programme provides an opportunity for officers to access continuous training in a flexible and efficient manner, while promoting a culture of lifelong learning and professional growth within the Service.

The NPS remains committed to nurturing a culture of professionalism, integrity, continuous learning and excellence among its officers, with the ultimate goal of delivering effective, responsive and professional policing services to the public.

POLICE PURSUE BANDITS, RECOVER 470 STOLEN LIVESTOCK IN MARSABIT COUNTY

A multi-agency security team in Marsabit County successfully recovered 470 stolen animals on 9 August 2026 and launched a major manhunt for bandits following a livestock raid in the Galgumbe area of Loiyangalani Sub-County.

The multi-agency team closely pursued the fleeing attackers, forcing them to abandon the 470 goats and sheep and escape into the rugged Ruai Hills. Security operations remain highly active in the area to track and apprehend the suspects, restore calm, and recover the remaining animals.

The National Police Service commends the multi-agency security team for its coordination and quick response, which led to the successful recovery of the goats and sheep.

An unfortunate incident occurred yesterday along the Chemelil–Miwani–Kisumu Road when a vehicle veered off the road and rolled into a ditch at Ombeyi Junction.

Officers from Miwani Police Station responded to a distress call and visited the scene, where they established that the ill fated vehicle was ferrying a consignment of cannabis sativa. They also confirmed that members of the public who were at the scene had come to the aid of the occupants, who later fled.

The scene was promptly secured, processed, and documented, while the vehicle was towed to Miwani Police Station for further investigations. The recovered cannabis sativa has been secured as an exhibit and is awaiting examination and further police action.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the source, intended destination, and ownership of the illicit consignment, as well as to identify and bring to justice all persons involved in its transportation and distribution.

The National Police Service remains resolute in its fight against the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs. Every consignment intercepted represents a step towards protecting communities from the devastating effects of drugs, while strengthening ongoing efforts to dismantle the networks that profit from the illegal trade.
