So What is ANITRAC?

ANITRAC stands for the Animal Identification and Traceability System,it is a national initiative aimed at improving livestock identification, traceability, disease surveillance, and livestock movement monitoring in Kenya.

The system seeks to create a more modern, accountable, and data-driven livestock sector through animal identification and digital record management.

This is expected to play a major role in:
• Strengthening animal disease control
• Improving food safety
• Supporting livestock trade and market access
• Enhancing livestock security and traceability

As Kenya’s livestock sector continues to evolve, awareness and understanding of systems like ANITRAC will become increasingly important for farmers, veterinary professionals, and all livestock stakeholders.

In one instance, we have Halima in Marsabit, watching the horizon every morning for rain clouds that rarely come. Her family’s entire life savings are tied up in her cattle, but with pastures drying out and invasive weeds taking over, keeping them alive is a daily battle. 💔

​In another instance, we have a group of young pastoralists in Kajiado eager to build a modern herding business, but they are held back by a lack of secure land registration and limited access to veterinary care. 🛑

​These aren't isolated stories—this is the everyday reality for millions of Kenyans living on rangelands that support over 70% of our national livestock herd.

​That’s exactly why the State Department for Livestock Development. is stepping up! At a recent high-level roundtable, Directorate of Veterinary Services - DVS Kenya Dr. Allan Azegele (speaking on behalf of PS Hon. Jonathan Mueke made it clear that we must move past just talking about the problem and start backing our people.

​To change the narrative for families like Halima's, the government has committed to a massive goal: rehabilitating 13.5 million hectares of degraded landscapes! 🌳🐐

​Here is how we are turning POLICY into real, CLIMATE-SMART action:

🔹 Securing Land Rights: Scaling up community land registration so pastoralists actually own and protect their future.

🔹 Investing in Animal Health: Boosting veterinary services and market access so livestock can survive droughts and fetch fair prices.

🔹 Empowering Women & Youth: Intentionally funding the next generation who are driving these local economies.

​As Kenya prepares to take these solutions to the global stage ahead of UNCCD COP17, the ultimate goal remains completely local: ensuring our pastoralist heroes have thriving green grass underfoot for generations to come.

Modern livestock disease control continues to evolve through better coordination, improved data systems, and technology-assisted animal identification.

During implementation discussions around the FMD vaccination program, technologies such as muzzle scanning and livestock identification systems were highlighted as important tools for:
✔ Animal traceability
✔ Vaccination verification
✔ Disease surveillance
✔ Data accuracy
✔ Accountability in livestock health programs

Strong animal health systems depend on both skilled veterinary professionals and reliable livestock information systems.

What’s in it for the meat sector? Everything.

Kenya’s first-ever National Meat Conference is set to redefine the future of the country’s meat sector by bringing together policymakers, investors, processors, traders, researchers and producers to unlock opportunities across the entire value chain.

Following a meeting chaired by PS Jonathan Mueke with the Conference Planning Committee and various sub-committees, preparations are in top gear for the landmark event that will place the meat producer at the centre of sector growth.

Under the theme, “Transforming Kenya’s Livestock Sector into a Resilient, Competitive Engine for Food Security and Economic Development,” the conference will focus on increasing livestock productivity, attracting investment, expanding markets, strengthening processing capacity, improving quality standards and positioning Kenya as a leading meat export hub.

By connecting policy, investment and innovation, the conference will provide a practical roadmap for building a modern, competitive and profitable meat industry where farmers earn more, businesses grow and go global and consumers access quality meat products.
