Tune in for Makala ya Tumaini!

As part of our efforts in implementing UNICEF’s SCORE II Project: Strengthening Climate Resilient WASH in Turkana, we have partnered with EJOK FM. 87.9 for a weekly show dedicated to building a more climate-resilient Turkana. CBCC, in partnership with UNICEF Kenya and Turkana County, is utilizing radio programming for the SBC Component of the Climate-Adaptive WASH & CLTS project through "Makala ya Tumaini". Makala ya Tumaini combines voices from the government, expert guests, local stories, and interactive call-ins.

Together, we are moving beyond simple awareness to practical, life-saving actions that protect our families during climate shocks. Tune in to Ejok FM 87.9 every Friday between 8am and 9am!. Don't miss out on the conversation.

Ready for the frontline!

Last month, we had the privilege of training Community Health Promoters (CHPs) on Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) for Climate-Adaptive WASH and CLTS, in partnership with UNICEF Kenya and the County Government of Turkana. As the heartbeat of this project, CHPs play a vital role in driving change at the household level. They are now better equipped with the knowledge and practical tools needed to support families in adapting to changing weather patterns and building more resilient, healthier communities.

From water safety to child protection, our CHPs are ready to walk with their communities toward a healthier, more prepared future.

At the Centre For Behaviour Change and Communication, we know that real change happens when solutions are inclusive, evidence-based and rooted in local context.

We partnered with the World Food Programme Kenya, the County Government of Marsabit and other stakeholders to host a Message Development Workshop on Healthy Diets and Fish Consumption at Palm Shade Camp & Resort in Loiyangalani, Marsabit.

The workshop brought together technical experts, policy actors, CSOs and community representatives to co-create culturally relevant, audience-specific messages aimed at promoting nutritious diets, sustainable fisheries and climate-resilient food systems.

Workshop Highlights:
✅ Strengthened participants’ skills in participatory and evidence-based message design
✅ Co-developed actionable communication themes for diverse community segments
✅ Built collaborative ownership for effective rollout and scaling of messages across Marsabit

Through inclusive and contextualized processes, our behaviour change strategies remain locally grounded, culturally sensitive and actionable, reinforcing our commitment to Human-Centred Social and Behaviour Change.

💡 Because when communities are part of the solution, change is real, sustainable and heartfelt.

Before any tool reaches the community, we take time to listen, learn and refine. 👂🏾

During our recent field-testing in Wajir and Garissa counties, Community Health Workers and community members shared honest, practical insights that helped us strengthen the adapted Most At-risk Mothers and Infants (MAMI) counselling cards, that include maternal nutrition, newborn care and identifying pregnancy risks, along with the accompanying audio-visual guides.

With support from Save the Children US, we’re ensuring these tools are simple, visual, culturally grounded and truly usable, especially in low-literacy settings.

Because when tools are shaped with the people who will use them, they become more than just materials, they become confidence, clarity and care in the hands of frontline workers.

At the heart of real change is co-creation with communities. 🤝

Listening. Learning. Acting together 🌾💬

During our recent Tushauriane Project field visit with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Amplio GH and Pwani University, across four sub-counties in Kilifi County, farmers, facilitators, county teams and partners came together to share experiences, reflect on progress and give feedback on how implementation is unfolding.

These sessions showed what Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) looks like in action:
✅ Participation – farmers sharing their experiences and perspectives.
✅ Feedback – communities providing insights that guide ongoing implementation.
✅ Communication – open discussions around Social and Behaviour Change messages and delivery.
✅ Partnership – dialogue with county governments, service providers and agro-dealers to explore collaboration and linkages that strengthen farmer support systems.

Each conversation reminded us that accountability isn’t a one-time activity, it’s a continuous commitment to listen, learn and act with communities at every step. 🤝

What happens when lifesaving tools are too complex for the frontline workers meant to use them?

In Garissa, Wajir & Somaliland, Centre For Behaviour Change and Communication with Save the Children US are adapting low-literacy tools, pictorial guides, counselling cards & audio-visual training, that make it easier for CHWs to support mothers and infants confidently.

One CHW told us:
“You listened to us and created the tools with us. I no longer worry about giving the wrong explanation. I can now use them confidently to guide mothers and infants in my community.”

🌱 In Kilifi County, women are at the heart of farming and feeding communities. Yet too often, they face barriers that limit their success, from limited access to land and markets to the heavy burden of unpaid care work.

Through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supported Tushauriane Tuimarishe Kilimo Biashara project, we are changing this together. 💪🏾
With Farmer Field Schools and household listening sessions, communities are engaging with audio dramas developed by Centre For Behaviour Change and Communication on gender equality, economic empowerment and agroecology through Amplio GH Talking Books.

🤝 These open discussions are breaking harmful norms, building women’s skills and strengthening family and community support for stronger agribusinesses.

Because at the heart of real change is listening, partnership, and practical solutions that empower farmers where they are 🤝.

🌾 Real change takes root when communities lead the way.

In Teso South, Busia County, Centre For Behaviour Change and Communication, working with KALRO, Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service - Kephis, the County Government of Busia, and International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), rolled out a powerful Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) initiative to boost the adoption of improved finger millet seed varieties.

Through Youth and Women Quality Centres (YWQC), multimedia campaigns, and farmer trainings using the Ukulima Sure campaign, we saw a remarkable shift:
✅ Awareness rose from 54% to 99%
✅ Adoption reached 75% among trained farmers

This is what happens when agriculture meets equity, innovation, and local voices. Because at the heart of real change is community empowerment.

Real progress in Dadaab!

Together with the World Food Programme Kenya, Garissa County, partners, and refugee representatives from Ifo, Ifo2, Hagadera and Dagahaley, the Centre For Behaviour Change and Communication led the validation of an SBC strategy focused on improving nutrition and food security.

This strategy is evidence-based, community-informed, and built to respond to the real needs of refugee communities.

Because at the heart of real change is listening, partnership, and action that puts people first.
