We are absolutely delighted to receive news that Dr Dennis Beesigamukama, Postdoctoral Fellow at icipe, has been named a Laureate of the 2026 Anthropocene Award in the Emerging Academic category, awarded by the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE).

Dennis becomes one of the very first researchers to be selected for this distinction, which will be conferred at a Ceremony on 12 March 2026 in Gödöllő, Hungary.

A newly launched international recognition established by MATE, the Anthropocene Award recognizes academics whose work has achieved outstanding impact beyond academia. It takes its name from the Anthropocene – the era shaped by human activity, where environmental and social systems are deeply interconnected.

At icipe, Dennis’ research focuses on refining and diversifying frass fertilizer production technologies and understanding the impacts of insect-composted organic fertilizers on soil health and crop productivity in different agroecological zones.

🌍🐝 Empowering Youth for Biodiversity Conservation Action in Cameroon!

, located in Central Africa, is one of Africa’s most biodiverse countries, yet it contributes less than 1% of species occurrence records to global biodiversity platforms such as iNaturalist.org and : The Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

Through our project funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation (https://jrsbiodiversity.org/grants/icipe-2023/), we trained secondary school and university students to document local plants and insects using the iNaturalist mobile app.

✨ This initiative has already generated over 4,000 biodiversity observations and more than 1,000 species recorded - a major step toward closing Cameroon’s biodiversity documentation data gap.

This project was implemented by Dr. Beatrice Nganso from icipe in partnership with Prof. Sidonie Fameni from the university of Maroua and Dr. Geraud Tasse Taboue from the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD) in Cameroon.

🌍🐝 Autonomiser les jeunes pour l’action en faveur de la conservation de la biodiversité au !

Le Cameroun, situé en Afrique centrale, est l’un des pays les plus riches en biodiversité en Afrique, mais il contribue à moins de 1 % des données d’occurrence d’espèces sur les plateformes mondiales de biodiversité en libre accès telles que iNaturalist.org et GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility

À travers notre projet financé par la JRS Biodiversity Foundation (https://jrsbiodiversity.org/grants/icipe-2023/), nous avons formé des élèves du secondaire et des étudiants universitaires à documenter les plantes et insectes locaux à l’aide de l’application mobile iNaturalist.

✨ Cette initiative a déjà permis de générer plus de 4 000 observations de biodiversité et d’enregistrer plus de 1 000 espèces — une avancée majeure pour réduire le déficit de données sur la documentation de la biodiversité au Cameroun.

Ce projet a été mis en œuvre par Dr Beatrice Nganso (icipe) en partenariat avec Prof. Sidonie Fameni (Université de Maroua) et Dr Geraud Tasse Taboue (Institut de Recherche Agricole pour le Développement – IRAD, Cameroun).
