It’s finally happening! 🎉 McMillan Memorial Library is now temporarily closed for repair work.

After years of research, planning and fundraising, we’re taking the first steps towards restoring Nairobi’s oldest library.

We’re starting with the building’s most urgent needs: repairing the roof and improving external drainage systems to protect the building from water damage and flooding.

This is the first phase of a much longer restoration journey, and we’re so excited to finally see the work begin. Follow along as we share updates from the works and the journey ahead.

While McMillan is temporarily closed, Eastlands and Kaloleni libraries remain open, with library services and programmes continuing as usual.

Let’s gooooo! 🎉

If you have visited Eastlands Library, you have probably walked past Baze—an outdoor seating area with small green grass patches on the lawn that form a giant chessboard.

In Sheng, baze is commonly used to mean a place to hang out, meet up, or spend time with your people—and that’s exactly what this space was designed to be.

Sometimes, especially during the school holidays, Baze comes alive with oversized chess pieces, transforming the lawn into an outdoor chess arena where every move sparks conversation, strategy, laughter and friendly competition.

Just like chess, public libraries bring people together across generations and backgrounds. They are places where everyone has a seat at the board, where ideas are exchanged, skills are built and communities grow stronger.

♟️ Your move.

Skills open doors. Communities keep them open.

This , we are celebrating the role of public libraries as community hubs where learning, creativity, collaboration and opportunity come together.

Libraries are community infrastructure where young people can build skills, access digital resources, participate in cultural programmes, find mentorship, and discover opportunities that support both personal and collective growth. Building stronger communities cannot happen in isolation. It requires the ideas, energy and lived experiences of young people themselves.

Together with Metis , through our Library Tours and a screening of How to Build a Library , we welcomed Community-Based Organisations from across Nairobi into to explore how public libraries can become spaces for collaboration, innovation and community-led change. An engagements that encouraged participants to share ideas, develop skills, test new initiatives and work with Book Bunk to create programmes that respond to the challenges and aspirations of young people.

Whether through arts, education, entrepreneurship, technology or civic engagement, your ideas can help shape libraries that serve the next generation. Together, we’re transforming public libraries into vibrant community hubs where knowledge becomes action, collaboration sparks innovation, and every young person has the opportunity to learn, contribute and thrive.

Have an idea you’d like to bring to life in one of our libraries? We’d love to hear from you. Write to us at [email protected] .

We have officially concluded Cohort 1 of our Kenyan Sign Language classes, a pilot initiative delivered in partnership with Handlanguage Kenya.

The classes emerged directly from community research conducted around the libraries, where residents expressed a desire for Kenyan Sign Language learning opportunities and more accessible, inclusive public spaces.

As the National Assembly passes the Kenyan Sign Language Bill, 2023, expanding rights, access, and recognition for Kenya’s Deaf and deafblind communities, we are proud that are already taking small but meaningful steps towards that vision. By learning, sharing, and creating spaces where everyone can communicate and belong, we move closer to libraries that truly serve all of us.

Congratulations to every learner in this first cohort, and thank you to Handlanguage Kenya for partnering with us on this journey.
