Under the Children Act, 2022, children whose parents or guardians are unable to provide adequate care and support are entitled to appropriate protection and alternative care that safeguards their wellbeing and best interests.

This may include kinship care, guardianship, foster care, adoption, kafaalah, emergency care, temporary shelter and other safe family and community-based care arrangements.

Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving and protective environment. Families remain the foundation of care, and alternative care should be used only when necessary, as a temporary measure and in the best interests of the child.

Let us all play our part in protecting children from abuse, violence, neglect and exploitation, and ensuring that every child is seen, safe and supported.

The State Department for Children Services continued its outreach in Kisumu County today, bringing child protection awareness and support closer to communities and learners.

At Asat Beach, the Principal Secretary for Children Services, CPA Carren Carren Ageng'o , engaged members of the public on child protection, including reporting mechanisms such as the National Child Helpline 116, and urged communities to take a firm stand against child sexual abuse and child labour.

The PS and a team led by the Secretary for Children Services, Mr. Shem Nyakutu, also visited five schools, where learners received food supplies and encouragement to remain focused on their education. These schools were Abol Girls Secondary School, Dr. James Nyikal Secondary School, Diemo Senior School, Nyamgun Mixed Secondary School, and Huma Comprehensive School.

The day concluded with a public baraza near Huma Comprehensive School, reinforcing the message that protecting children is a shared responsibility.

The State Department for Children Services, led by Principal Secretary, CPA Carren Ageng'o , accompanied by the Deputy County Commissioner, Kisumu West Sub-County, and a team from the Child Welfare Society of Kenya, continued the distribution of relief food and dignity kits to vulnerable learners across Kisumu West Sub-County.

The team visited St. Mark’s Secondary School – Obambo, St. George’s Sianda Secondary School, AIC Bar Union Senior School and St. Anthony D**o Kokore, where the Principal Secretary also engaged students through mentorship and encouraged them to remain focused, committed and diligent in their education.

Across the schools, the Principal Secretary emphasised that education is a key pathway to opportunity and a better future, urging every learner to remain focused on their goals and make the most of their education.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and realise their full potential.
