The Government today issued cheques worth Ksh. 116,676,626 to 206 victims of Human Wildlife Conflicts in Mara Siana Conservancy in Narok County.

Representing the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, the Secretary Administration Tobiko Nayioma commended the community for protecting the pride of Kenyan heritage- the Big 5.

He noted that no amount of compensation is worth a lost life and highlighted the mitigation measures being put in place by the Government to prevent death and minimize conflicts.

They include: fast tracking digging of water pans and boreholes; er****on of electric fence, increasing community conservancies, restoration of degraded conservancies, and enhancing awareness creation among members of the public on matters HWC.

The Government also donated water tanks to surrounding schools and the community.

This compensation programme is part of the 960m allocated to the State Department for Wildlife in the current financial year and is expected to increase to 1.4b in the next financial year.

Present during the event was the deputy governor Koech Tiamilel, National Government Administration Officers, KWS, WWF, NGAAF,,The Cheetah Project, area MCA, and representatives from community conservancies among others.

As part of its corporate social responsibility and commitment to strengthening human-wildlife coexistence, the State Department for Wildlife also donated 20 water tanks to various communities across Samburu County.

The donation recognizes the county's arid and semi-arid climate, where access to water remains a major challenge for both people and livestock. By improving water storage capacity, the initiative seeks to enhance community resilience, support livelihoods, and reduce competition for water resources between humans and wildlife, a key driver of Human-Wildlife Conflict.

The water tanks will benefit households and community institutions by providing reliable water storage, particularly during prolonged dry seasons, while contributing to sustainable coexistence between communities and the wildlife that forms an integral part of Samburu's heritage.

This intervention complements the Government's broader efforts to support communities living alongside wildlife through compensation, conservation awareness, and community-based wildlife management programmes.

The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, through the State Department for Wildlife, joined the Samburu County Government and residents in celebrating Kenya's 63rd Madaraka Day at Kenyatta Stadium, Maralal.

The colourful celebrations, marked by vibrant cultural displays and patriotic fervour, were graced by Samburu Governor H.E. Lati Lelelit and attended by county leadership, national government officials led by the County Commissioner, and the Great people of Samburu.

During the event, the State Department for Wildlife disbursed Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) compensation cheques worth KShs. 75,612,699 approved for 608 beneficiaries in Samburu County under the FY 2025/2026 compensation programme.

The Samburu community, like many other Maa-speaking communities, has a long history of coexisting with wildlife. However, this coexistence often comes with challenges as communities continue to experience Human-Wildlife Conflict, including loss of life, injuries, crop destruction, and livestock predation.

Samburu remains among the counties most affected by Human-Wildlife Conflict and has consequently received significant compensation payments from the Government over the years. The compensation programme reflects the Government's commitment to easing the burden on affected families while promoting harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife.

As Kenya celebrated its freedom and self-governance, the event underscored the importance of ensuring that communities living alongside wildlife share in the benefits of conservation while receiving support when conflicts arise.

Today, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, through the State Department for Wildlife, joins the Samburu County Government in celebrating Kenya's 63rd Madaraka Day at Kenyatta Stadium, Maralal.

As part of the celebrations, the State department for Wildlife will disburse KShs. 75,612,699 to Samburu County under the Financial Year 2025/2026 . The National Treasury allocated Ksh 1.4B nationwide for the same period.

The compensation affirms the Government's commitment to supporting communities affected by Human-Wildlife Conflict while strengthening conservation efforts and fostering harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife.

Kenya has officially launched the “Magical Kenya – The Origin of Wonder” strategy, an ambitious initiative aimed at doubling international visitor numbers and increasing tourism revenue by 1.5 times through strategic digital transformation and global partnerships.

To support the realization of this vision, Google Kenya and the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife signed a Letter of Collaboration committing to a joint investment in three key pillars: digital capacity and youth empowerment, Google Cloud and enterprise AI infrastructure, and enhanced global visibility through Google Ads and market intelligence.

The partnership, implemented alongside delivery partners The Africa Growth Lab and Action Lab, will run from May to December 2026 through a phased programme focusing on foundation building, skilling and architecture, and activation of the Ministry’s Google Cloud infrastructure and global campaign rollouts.

The 22-member Tourism Taskforce was constituted to develop innovative strategies aimed at rebranding the Magical Kenya identity, boosting Kenya’s global competitiveness, increasing tourism attraction, and creating employment opportunities for the youth.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH congratulated the taskforce for its commendable work and lauded the partnership with Google Kenya, noting that it would significantly support Kenya’s ambition of increasing annual experience-driven travellers from the current 3 million to 5 million international visitors while growing tourism revenue.

The CS further noted that the collaboration with Google Kenya would help diversify the Magical Kenya brand through technology-driven solutions, digital innovation, and mapping tourism experiences across all 47 counties.

Also present were the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Wildlife Silvia Museiya , members of the Tourism Taskforce, Wildlife Research & Training Institute Kenya CEO Dr Omondi , TRI CEO, CEO TPF, Kenya Wildlife Service, and Kenya Tourism Board among other stakeholders.

As Kenya joins the world in commemorating International Day for Biological Diversity, the Ministry through the State Department for Wildlife today issued compensation cheques worth KSh 24.3 million to 155 beneficiaries affected by Human-Wildlife Conflict in Saku Constituency, Marsabit County.

Speaking on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary, Tobiko Noyioma reaffirmed the Government’s commitment towards sustainable Human-Wildlife Conflict mitigation measures through construction of electric fences, expansion of community conservancies, development of water pans and boreholes, and strengthening partnerships for wildlife conservation.

The Government also continues to enhance coexistence initiatives through restoration of wildlife corridors and the piloting of a digital compensation system aimed at ensuring faster and more efficient compensation to affected communities.
