The High Commission of Barbados to Kenya develops and maintains relations between Barbados and the Republic of Kenya, and serves the consular needs of Barbadians in Kenya, Botswana, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, the Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. It is also jointly accredited as Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Nairobi, where it primarily se

rvices the United Nations Environment Programme and UN Habitat. The current High Commissioner is H.E. William Alexander McDonald, who presented credentials on September 1, 2021.

Barbados does not recognise or facilitate birth tourism. Birth tourism refers to the deliberate travel of non-nationals to a country for the primary or ancillary purpose of giving birth there, in order to secure citizenship or immigration advantages for the parents.

The birth of a child in Barbados to non-national parents does not entitle either parent to any form of residency, whether temporary or otherwise. Parenthood of a child born in Barbados also does not create any future pathway to Barbadian citizenship for the non-national parents.

Barbados has formally joined the Wider Caribbean Ocean Coordination Mechanism, with a Memorandum of Understanding signed on behalf of Barbados by High Commissioner McDonald in the margins of the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya.

This strategic alignment moves regional ocean management from isolated national policies to a unified governance framework, strengthening Barbados’ capacity to address transboundary marine challenges as part of a coalition now comprising 22 countries and 9 intergovernmental organisations.

In practical terms, the mechanism enables signatories to coordinate on securing large scale global climate financing, share standardised scientific data to track ecological shifts, and establish collaborative frameworks to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

Through this mechanism, Barbados elevates its national blue economy objectives and contributes to a consolidated regional voice in global ocean diplomacy.

Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. was the title sponsor for the recently-held Africa MICE Expo, held at the Sarit Expo Centre, advancing Barbados’ positioning as a premier global hub for corporate meetings, incentives and exhibitions. The High Commission team was pleased to lend their support.

Business Development Officer, Asher Payne, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of BTMI, outlining Barbados’ competitive advantages in infrastructure, hospitality and corporate connectivity, and went on to speak on several panels, including on the important topic of connectivity as an economic driver, and the exciting potential to strengthen air links between the continent and Barbados.

BTMI’s booth also served as a central B2B hub, securing commercial relationships to grow the destination’s market share in Kenya and East Africa.

BTMI remains an invaluable partner to the Mission, driving tourism growth across Kenya, East Africa and the wider African market.

It was a full house for the High Commission’s annual Toast to the Caribbean, with over 100 members of the diaspora in attendance. Held to coincide with CARICOM Day, the Toast is the High Commission’s celebration of the Caribbean community in East and Southern Africa.

This year, answering a challenge thrown out by the High Commission one year ago, the community has formalised with the launch of the Caribbean Africa Association, established with the guidance of the Mission’s Culture and Diaspora Affairs Consultant. The Association now joins similar diaspora bodies in global cities where Barbados is represented, and it will work alongside the High Commission, and in its own right, to mobilise people and resources behind Caribbean interests both on the continent and at home.

The evening also introduced the team of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., whose regional headquarters for Africa and the Middle East has now been fully established at the Chancery in Nairobi.

The Honourable Christopher Gibbs, Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance of Barbados paid a courtesy call on the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, the UN’s agency for housing and urban development, at the agency’s global headquarters in Nairobi on the margins of the Innovate4Cities Conference.

The conference brought municipal and national governments together to tackle how housing and urban infrastructure could stand up to a changing climate. For Barbados, that means housing and coastal infrastructure built to withstand stronger storms, and access to the climate finance that pays for resilience-building. The Minister raised these priorities with the Executive Director, and also discussed the possibility of a regional housing think tank focused on small island developing states.

While in Nairobi, the Minister also paid a visit to the Chancery and met the diplomatic and local staff representing Barbados in Kenya.

On this date in 1834, the Emancipation Act came into force across the British Caribbean. In Barbados, freedom was not immediate: four years of apprenticeship followed, and it was only on 1 August 1838 that emancipation was complete.

Eighteen years before the Act, the enslaved of Barbados had already risen. A rebellion on Easter Sunday, 1816, began at Bayley's Plantation and became the largest in Barbadian history. Its leader was Bussa, an African-born man who commanded some four hundred men and women. He was killed in the fighting.

The rebellions that followed Bussa's collectively broke the Empire's confidence in slavery. Within two years of the last of them, the Act was passed, and Bussa today stands as a National Hero of Barbados.

We take a moment to thank the young cricketers of Kenya who came out yesterday to the Simba Cricket Ground to honour The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers as he was laid to rest in Barbados.

Sir Gary was a champion of young people. His International Schools Cricket Tournament has given generations their first taste of the game at a serious level, and yesterday a new generation came together in Nairobi to pay their respects.

Today, as Barbados lays to rest The Right Excellent Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, the High Commission of Barbados in Nairobi joins the nation and the wider Caribbean family in bidding a final farewell to a National Hero.

We express our profound gratitude to the diplomatic community of Kenya, whose Ambassadors, High Commissioners, and representatives came to the Chancery in recent days to sign the Book of Condolence and to stand with Barbados in its hour of loss. Their presence was a moving reminder that Sir Gary belonged not only to Barbados and the West Indies, but to the world.

Our thanks go equally to the cricketing fraternity of Kenya, who gathered with us at Simba Cricket Ground to pay their respects, to sign the Book of Condolence, and to join us in marking the final farewell as Sir Gary was laid to rest. That the game he graced so remarkably should bring us together on this day, thousands of miles away in Nairobi, is itself a tribute to the reach of his greatness.

We are also proud to announce our commitment to honour his memory in the manner most fitting: with cricket. In October, at the Simba Cricket Ground, the Mission will stage the inaugural Garfield Sobers memorial T20 match between the Legends and Seniors of Kenya, played in his honour. The Mission intends this to be an enduring tradition, ensuring that in Kenya, as in Barbados, his name lives on through the game he loved.

With deep gratitude for a life well lived, the High Commission of Barbados in Kenya honours the memory of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, National Hero of Barbados, who passed away on Friday, 17 July 2026, at the age of 89.

For the better part of two decades, from 1954 to 1974, Sir Gary wore the colours of the West Indies and carried the hopes of a region with him to every crease he graced. He was, quite simply, the finest all-rounder the game has ever known: a batsman of breathtaking elegance, a bowler of three disciplines in one, and a fielder without equal. In 1958, still only twenty-one, he made an unbeaten 365 runs against Pakistan, a world record that would stand for thirty-six years. Ten years later, at Swansea, he became the first man in the history of first-class cricket to strike six sixes in a single over.

Yet his gift to the West Indies ran deeper than any record. As captain and as champion, he showed a young Caribbean, newly finding its voice in the world, that greatness was ours to claim. He carried the name of these islands onto every great ground on earth, and he made us proud. When he was named a National Hero of Barbados in 1998, it only confirmed what the region had long known: that in Sir Gary we had been given one of our very finest.

His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae, Third President of the Republic of Botswana, is today laid to rest at Phomolong Memorial Park in Phakalane. He led his country from 1998 to 2008, in a decade defined by economic discipline and democratic consolidation.

Trained as an economist at the Universities of Oxford and Sussex, President Mogae served as Governor of the Bank of Botswana, as Permanent Secretary to the President, and as Minister of Finance and Development Planning before assuming the Vice Presidency in 1992 and the Presidency in 1998.

Under his leadership, Botswana became the first nation on the African continent to provide universal antiretroviral treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS, at a time when the country faced one of the world’s heaviest burdens from the disease.

His voluntary transfer of power at the end of his second term, in keeping with the constitutional two-term limit, and his subsequent recognition through the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in 2008, remain among the defining markers of his public life. In the years that followed, he served as United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Change and continued to lend his voice to public health advocacy across the continent.

May he rest in peace.
