Preparing for IDG 2026 in Nyamira County

The Anti-FGM Board team was in Nyamira County as preparations gather momentum for the National Commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2026, which will be hosted in the county.

We paid a courtesy call on the County Commissioner, represented by Deputy County Commissioner John Maina, where we briefed the office on the status of Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) in Nyamira County and shared the plans for this year’s national commemoration.

We also paid a courtesy call on the Governor, where we were hosted by the County Secretary, and held consultations with key county stakeholders to chart the way forward for the commemoration.

For IDG 2026, we have customised the global theme to reflect the realities and priorities of the country:

“Ending FGM and Investing in Girls’ Rights.”

The theme places girls at the centre of our efforts to end FGM, protect their rights and create an environment where every girl can grow, learn, thrive and realise her full potential.

The journey to IDG 2026 has begun. Nyamira is ready.

Community Health Promoters (CHPs) act as a bridge between households and health facilities by providing basic screening, health education and medical referral for patients.

Led by the Director Research and Policy, Hashim Musa, the Board engaged the Community Health Promoters on their role in the fight against FGM and other harmful practice in Garissa County.

CHPs are used as referral pathways for at risk members of the communities they serve.

They spot warning signs, healthcare, psychosocial support and serve as a link between the communities and the national government administration officers including the chiefs.

Community Health Promoters play a critical role in protecting girls from Female Ge***al Mutilation.

The Anti-FGM Board held a sensitization forum at Nyamarambe in South Mugirango, Kisii County, bringing together Community Health Promoters to strengthen community-led efforts to end FGM.

The forum focused on practical ways to identify and report cases of FGM and other forms of gender-based violence using the available reporting tool. Participants also discussed effective approaches for engaging parents, girls and caregivers during household visits and community health check-ins, creating opportunities for dialogue, awareness and timely intervention.

The Community Health Promoters also shared experiences from their work on the ground, highlighting the importance of building trust with families and creating safe spaces where girls can speak openly about issues affecting them.

As trusted members of their communities, they are uniquely positioned to spot early warning signs, provide accurate information and connect families to the right support and services when needed.

Monday, August 3, marked the close of a significant chapter as we bid farewell to our CEO Bernadette Loloju, who officially handed over leadership of the Anti-FGM Board after serving for 10 years.
As the Board's first employee and first substantive Chief Executive Officer, she has been part of the institution's journey from its formative years to where it stands today.
Leading a young institution through a decade of growth, partnerships, policy implementation, and advocacy is no small feat.
Her tenure coincided with important milestones in Kenya's efforts to eliminate Female Ge***al Mutilation, and her commitment helped strengthen the Board's role in coordinating the national response alongside government agencies, county governments, development partners, civil society, communities, and survivors.
As she embarks on a new chapter, we thank her for her years of service, leadership, and dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of girls and women.
We wish her every success and fulfillment in the journey ahead.

Today, the Anti-FGM Board engaged religious leaders in Kopsiro (Mt Elgon), Bungoma County, to strengthen ongoing efforts aimed at ending FGM.

The faith leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of girls and promoting positive cultural and moral values that uphold life, health, and education.

Discussions highlighted the critical role of religious institutions as trusted community influencers in driving awareness, challenging harmful social norms, and reinforcing protective messaging against FGM.

The engagement also referenced the Sabaot Declaration of 2024, in which community elders collectively declared that FGM is no longer a necessary rite of passage for girls. The declaration further marked a significant shift in social norms by affirming that young men are no longer bound by the taboo of marrying uncut girls, an important step in dismantling the cultural expectations that have historically sustained the practice.

Participants reiterated their commitment to continue championing the abandonment of FGM within their congregations and wider communities, positioning faith leadership as a key pillar in sustaining long-term behaviour and social change.

Ending FGM requires a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach that brings together government agencies, community leaders, development partners, and other stakeholders.

Yesterday, the Wajir County Anti-FGM Steering Committee convened to strengthen collaboration and discuss strategies for accelerating the abandonment of FGM in the county. The meeting was attended by the Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Wajir East, the CEO Gender, Wajir County, the County GBV Coordinator, and other key stakeholders.

Participants underscored the importance of sustained community engagement, enforcement of anti-FGM laws, protection of girls at risk, and support for survivors. The forum also provided an opportunity to review progress, identify emerging challenges, and enhance coordination among stakeholders working to eliminate the harmful practice.

According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022, Wajir County remains among the counties with high FGM prevalence, underscoring the need for continued collective action to protect girls and women from the practice.

Today in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, the Anti-FGM Board, together with county stakeholders, inaugurated the West Pokot County Anti-FGM Steering Committee. The forum unpacked the committee’s mandate and the legal framework guiding the fight against Female Ge***al Mutilation, setting a stronger coordination structure for prevention, enforcement, and community engagement.

Key concerns raised included the persistence of cross-border FGM in Alale, where cutting remains rife, and a worrying shift in the “cutting season” away from December to periods that evade law enforcement. Chiefs, village elders, and Nyumba Kumi teams were firmly put to task, given their proximity to community knowledge and their ability to identify suspected cutters, many of whom reportedly cross the border and return after the act. The discussion also highlighted how some remote hills, with poor terrain and weak network coverage, are being exploited to hide the practice.

According to KDHS 2022, West Pokot County records an FGM prevalence of 44%, a sobering statistic that framed much of the discussion. Child marriage also featured prominently, reinforcing the interconnected nature of harmful practices affecting girls’ wellbeing and education. Low school enrolment was linked to structural challenges, including lack of basic services such as water, which continues to undermine retention of children in school.

The forum was officially opened by the County Executive Committee Member for Gender, with the County Commissioner represented by an official who delivered his remarks. Importantly, the session also featured the Alale Declaration, where elders publicly reaffirmed their commitment to end the cutting of girls in their community, a critical signal of local ownership in the long journey toward abandonment of FGM.

Yesterday, the Anti-FGM Board convened a Survivors' Forum bringing together participants from Wajir East and other sub-counties in Wajir County. The meeting was officially opened by the County Chief Officer for Gender, alongside officers from the County Department of Gender, underscoring the county government's commitment to protecting women and girls from harmful practices.

The forum provided a safe space for survivors to share their experiences, challenges, and recommendations on how communities can accelerate efforts to end Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM). Participants emphasized the importance of education, awareness creation, community dialogue, and support systems for survivors.

According to the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), Wajir remains among the counties with a high prevalence of FGM at 97% (among women aged 15–49) highlighting the need for sustained and coordinated interventions to protect girls and uphold their rights and dignity.

The Anti-FGM Board appreciates the collaboration of the County Government of Wajir, survivors, community stakeholders, and all partners working towards a future where every girl can grow up free from FGM and realize her full potential.
