Strengthening Mombasa’s Waste Management System.

In a bid to strengthen the waste management system in Mombasa, the Department of Environment held a meeting with representatives from 42 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) participating in the ongoing waste collection pilot project.

The engagement focused on addressing challenges and issues experienced during the first week of implementation, reviewing work plans, and developing effective reporting tools to enhance efficiency and accountability.

This initiative is in line with Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir’s vision of modernizing solid waste management under his 9th Point Agenda — building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Mombasa for all.

Sensitization Meeting on Wealth Declaration Compliance.
Today, the Department of Environment held the final sensitization meeting with the DIALs team to map out strategies for achieving 100% compliance in the ongoing biannual Wealth Declaration exercise that started on 1st of Nov to 31st of December 2025.
Our Director for Administration, together with teams from the County Public Service Board, ICT Department, and the County Secretary’s Office, reaffirmed our joint commitment to ensuring that the exercise was carried out successfully within the prescribed period and empasissed the impotance of supporting the staff who are not computer literate to complete the exercise.
As the 31st December 2025 submission deadline approaches, all officers are encouraged to use the Online DIALs System to complete their declarations efficiently and on time.

Today, we took a bold step toward a cleaner and more efficient Mombasa with the launch of the pilot phase of the Efficient Waste Collection Program.

As part of this transformative initiative, the Department of Environment facilitated the application for Certificates of Good Conduct and inoculations for 43 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) who will be at the frontline of this program’s implementation.

This milestone reflects Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir ‘s unwavering commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable Mombasa.

Today, we hosted officials from the Government of Denmark under the Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) in Kenya. The delegation was led by Kamilla Heden, Sector Counselor for Circular Economy & Environment, joined by Janne Winther and Louise Munkholm from DEPA.

Now in its third phase, the SSC remains an important partnership for Mombasa, focusing on technical support in capacity building—both in policy and regulatory frameworks, particularly on the domestication of the EPR regulations, data as well as human resource development.

Already, several of our county staff have benefited from training opportunities in Denmark, and we are happy that this collaboration is now extending to our waste picker groups, who are also undergoing various trainings.

During today’s visit, our partners also toured Mombasa’s first Material Recovery Facility (MRF), witnessing firsthand our diversion system in action.

For too long, our neighborhoods have carried the burden of garbage piles, collection points squeezed into small spaces, sometimes too close to homes and even schools.

But change is here.

Today, we signed a Framework of Cooperation with MIDELLA to run Mombasa’s first-ever Material Recovery Facility (MRF)!
All waste from Mvita will now be sent to the MRF, where it will be sorted and held before final disposal at Mwakirunge.
From this pilot, we’ll gather lessons that will help us scale to the rest of Mombasa.
