The Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mikah O. Nyaberi, alongside KFIC staff, undertook a site visit of the Kipini, Kichwa cha Kati, and Ngomeni Fish Landing Sites to assess the status of ice production and operational readiness at the facilities. The exercise forms part of KFIC’s ongoing efforts to improve fish value chain by promoting functioning cold chain. This aims at enhancing fish handling, reduce post-harvest losses, and support sustainable livelihoods for fishing Coastal communities.

The CEO of Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation, Dr. Mikah Nyaberi, accompanied by the Assistant Director Mr. James Ndiritu, attended a high-level strategic engagement forum with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) at the KCB Leadership Centre in Nairobi. The purpose of the forum was Deliberate on financing and partnership opportunities within the blue economy and Maritime Sectors.
The forum was graced by Ms. Betsy Njagi, the Principal Secretary, State Department for the Blue Economy and Fisheries, and the Principal Secretary for Maritime Affairs, Aden Abdi Millah, alongside other Chief Executive Officers from State Agencies under the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs. These included Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), Kenya Fisheries Service (KeFS), Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA), Kenya National Shipping Line (KNSL), Kenya Fish Marketing Authority (KFMA), and the Fish Levy Trust Fund (FLTF).
The engagement highlighted a strong pipeline of investment opportunities across fisheries and aquaculture, ports and logistics, shipbuilding and repair, marine tourism, and enabling infrastructure and technology. Participants emphasized the need for strengthened collaboration with financial institutions to unlock capital, drive sustainable growth, create employment, and uplift coastal and riparian communities while safeguarding marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Hon. Jimmy Kahindi, Chairperson of Board Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation, alongside Dr. Mikah O. Nyaberi, PhD, Chief Executive Officer, paid a courtesy call to the Principal Secretary for Public Investments and Assets Management (PIAM), Mr. Cyrell Wagunda, at the Treasury Building.

The meeting follows KFIC’s transition into a Government-Owned Enterprise (GOE) under the GOE Act of 2025, placing it within the State Department for Public Investments and Assets Management.

During the engagement, KFIC leadership briefed the Principal Secretary to the Corporation’s mandate, core functions, key milestones achieved, as well as the challenges encountered and areas requiring intervention.

They also explored opportunities for strategic support to strengthen the Corporation’s capacity to deliver on its mandate of sustainably exploiting fishery resources within Kenya’s territorial waters and the high seas, while promoting the growth and efficiency of enterprises engaged in fishing-related activities.

Mr. Wagunda reaffirmed his commitment to supporting KFIC in its pursuit of becoming a premier global leader in the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources.

Dr. Mikah Nyaberi, CEO of the Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation(KFIC), accompanied by the Business and Production Department team, paid a courtesy visit to Migori County where they engaged with key county officials, including CECM for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Blue Economy Hon. Lucas Mosenda, Chief Officer for Fisheries and Blue Economy Mr. George Ochola, and Director of Fisheries and Blue Economy Ms. Judith Okinda.

The discussions focused on strategies to commercialize the Sori Landing Site and Beach Management Unit (BMU) to enhance its operational capacity and deliver sustainable value to the local community. A technical team from KFIC, led by Mr. Japheth Musila (Head of Production and Business Development) accompanied by Mr. Iddy Munuphe, collaborated with the Vanga Blue Forest community-based restoration team and the Kenya Forest Service to plant 40,000 mangrove seedlings in Vanga, Kwale County, on 27th March. This activity was conducted in line with the ministerial tree planting schedule and supports the Kenya Government initiative to plant 15 billion trees.

A Delegation from Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation (KFIC), led by the CEO Dr. Mikah Nyaberi, accompanied by officers from the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries based in Kisumu, conducted a courtesy visit to key landing sites across the Nyanza and Western regions.

The landing sites visited included Sori BMU in Migori County, Lwanda K’otieno in Siaya County, and Mukuloba BMU in Busia County.

The purpose of the visit was to assess and support the operationalization of the Fisheries strategic facilities, with a focus on enhancing mini processing plants, ice production units, cold storage systems, and fish auctioning infrastructure. This initiative aims to improve efficiency, strengthen fish trade, and unlock the full business potential of the landing sites in line with the KFIC mandate.

The session focused on reviewing the Office of the Auditor-General Reports for the financial years 2023/2024 and 2024/2025, assessing progress made, and providing an opportunity for the CEO to respond to issues raised by the committee. The Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation successfully conducted its Mid-Year Performance Evaluation at Liwatoni Headquarters in collaboration with the State Department for the Blue Economy and Fisheries. The evaluation provided a platform to review implementation of performance targets, assess progress, and identify areas requiring accelerated action for the remainder of the financial year. Present during the closure meeting were Mr. Samwel Mukindia (Director of Planning), Ms. Robina Kwamboka (Chief Economist), Mr. Mugo Kibicho (Economist), Mr. Tonkei Kametoo and Ms. Ida Chepkwony. The Technical Team from Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation (KFIC) successfully participated in a high-level Ministerial Tree Planting Exercise at the Kipini Bujra site in Tana River County, in close collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and the local community committees.

During the February 2026 initiative, an impressive 60,000 mangrove tree seedlings were planted, reaffirming a strong commitment to environmental conservation, climate action, and sustainable Coastal and marine ecosystem restoration.

This exercise not only strengthened inter-agency collaboration but also demonstrated KFIC’s dedication to supporting national efforts toward increasing forest cover to 30% and promoting a greener, more resilient future for Kenya. 🌱
