KWALE COUNTY DEPUTY GOVERNOR WALKS OUT OF CS JOHO’S MEETING IN PROTEST OVER MRIMA MINING DEAL

Friday, January 9, 2026

Kwale County Deputy Governor Josphat Chirema Kombo angrily walked out of a meeting organized by the Ministry of Mining and Blue Economy, led by Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho, on Friday at the Kenya School of Government, Matuga Campus.

The meeting, which aimed to deliberate on the proposed Mrima Hills mineral mining project valued at approximately Sh8.1 trillion in Lunga Lunga Sub-County, brought together Members of Parliament, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), and senior Kwale County officials.

The Deputy Governor who was accompanied by Pongwe–Kikoneni MCA Omar Mwaduga and Vanga MCA Yusuf Mbwana, accused the organizers of attempting to force local leaders to accept the mining deal without adequate public participation.

Speaking to journalists outside the GTI conferencing hall, Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo faulted Cabinet Secretary Joho for what he termed as sidelining and humiliating Kwale leaders.

“We cannot sit in a meeting where leaders are being intimidated and denied a chance to air the concerns of the people they represent. This process is flawed and disrespectful to the leadership of Kwale County,” said Chirema.

He maintained that the county government would not support the mining of Mrima minerals unless the concerns of residents are addressed.

“Kwale County will not accept the mining of Mrima minerals until the National Government listens to the voices and cries of our leaders and wananchi. Development cannot be imposed on people,” he added.

Pongwe–Kikoneni Ward MCA Omar Mwaduga and Vanga Ward MCA Yusuf Mbwana backed the Deputy Governor’s position, insisting that they would not allow residents to be marginalized in a project of such magnitude.

“We were elected to protect the interests of our people, and we will not allow them to be oppressed or excluded from decisions that directly affect their land and livelihoods,” said MCA Mbwana

Mrima Hills has now become one of the regions in the globe to have the Rare Earth Minerals, consisting of Niobium deposits.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF MSAMBWENI VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER, RAMISI WARD

Wednesday, November 26, 2025

I had the honor of officially opening the Msambweni Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Ramisi Ward, Msambweni Sub-County.

The center is currently offering technical courses, including IT, Electrical, Hairdressing and Beauty, and Fashion and Design, to over 100 students from across Msambweni.

I also handed over a variety of essential training equipment to the institution, including industrial and manual sewing machines, fashion mirrors, dress and head dummies, a massage bed, water heater, hood and blow dryers, salon trolleys, a sterilizer machine, an adjustable salon sink, a tracing wheel, meter rulers, scissors, a manicure table, and college chairs.

Our goal is to ensure that we provide the necessary support and resources that will enable our young people to acquire practical skills that are fundamental to creating self-employment and opening doors to meaningful economic opportunities.

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen vocational training in Kwale, we have so far constructed and equipped 43 VTCs, employed 134 instructors across the county, and allocated a VTC grant of Ksh 46 million to support the training of our youth.

I urge young people across the county to take full advantage of these facilities and shape their future through skills that will empower them to create their own jobs and livelihoods.

As Kwale County, we appreciate the continued support of our development partners in the implementation of various county projects, and we remain open to further collaboration.

Also present were: CECM Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Roman Shera, CECM PSA Karua Tsiwezi, CECM Social Services Francisca Kilonzo, CECM Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Planning Saumu Beja, Chief Officer Trade Hassan Ngalaa, Chief Officer PSA Mebakari Mwatabu, Chief Officer Agriculture Joseph Jabu, Chief Officer Health Athman Mwashando, Directors, and other county officials.

Empowering women is crucial for achieving sustainable development, promoting gender equality, improving health outcomes, boosting economic growth, and creating a more just and peaceful society, as it allows women to contribute fully to their communities, make informed decisions about their lives, and break cycles of poverty and violence.

HE Fatuma Achani Accompanied by her Deputy Chirema Kombo and Samburu Chengoni Ward Member of County Assembly Hon John Shede graced the Samburu Chengoni Ward women Empowerment program at Kinagoni Secondary School.

*RESIDENTS RECEIVES FREE HEALTH SERVICES IN KINANGO, KWALE*

Over 500 patients in Kwale County have received free medical treatment, through a corporate social responsibility program organized by the Kenya Navy, in collaboration with the Kwale County Government at Kinango Sub County Hospital in Kinango Constituency.

During the program, the residents had the opportunity to receive various health services including, free medical screening for cervical cancer, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Vitals, Consultancy Services in mental health, eye services, teeth related issues among others, diagnosis support services and blood donation drive.

This comes at a time when the Kenya Navy is preparing for the 'Kenya Navy Day' to be celebrated on 14th December, 2024 as they celebrate 60 years of services in Mombasa.

Speaking at Kinango, the Kenya Navy Chief for Health Services Brigadier Dr. Justino Muinde, said that the free health program aims at helping the residents in the County to get the necessary services as one of the ways of giving back to the society.

"We are conducting these free medical services to return to the community we work with. All these activities are geared towards our celebration for 60 years of services as Kenya Navy." Said Muinde.

On his part, the Kwale County Chief Officer for Health Curative and rehabilitative services Dr. Kitsao Mjimba said that the County Government will continue to collaborate with the National Government, in order to bring development to the County.

"We are happy for the Collaboration between the County and the National Government for bringing such an event to the County and i hope our people will benefit out of it." Said Mjimba.

Michael Mumbo and Mwanakombo Suleiman are some of the beneficiaries of the program, thanking the Kwale County Government and the Kenya Navy for organizing the free health camp in Kinango, saying that it has cut down the expenses of looking for similar services in other health facilities.

"This activity has helped us since we have received free treatments, free medicines and I am happy that the services that i was to receive at Msambweni Referral Hospial, i received them here at Kinango Sub County Hospital." Said Mwanakombo Suleiman.

As the Kwale County Government continues to streamline the health sector in the region, residents have been urged to register for the new Social Health Authority (SHA) for free medical Cover.

Kwale County Deputy Governor, HE Chirema Kombo, today received the Cabinet Secretary for Sports (CS), Kipchumba Murkomen, as part of a tour to inspect the progress of construction works at the Kwale Stadium and the State Lodge in preparation for the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for October 20th.

During their visit, Murkomen inspected the recently tarmacked roads around the facilities, as well as the ongoing final work on the state lodge and stadium construction. The Dongo Kundu bypass roads were also part of their tour to ensure that transportation infrastructure was in good condition ahead of the celebrations.

In addition to stadium preparations, other ongoing efforts include expanding road networks and clearing up Kwale town as part of overall readiness for this momentous occasion.

The Mashujaa Day celebration is an annual public holiday held in Kenya to honor heroes, national heroes, and freedom fighters who contributed significantly towards Kenya's struggle for independence.
