Standstill is not an option during an emergency, and ambulance services knows that problem. Motorcycle ambulances can be the solutions.Traffic congestion is one of the main problems in Kenya and the world especially when it comes to rescue times, and the most important thing is being ready to face many of commuters and other road users blocked in the highway. If you are an emergency provider, you cannot be stuck for hours with the ambulance in case of a call for a cardiac arrest or trauma patient. Motorcycle ambulances could make you reach any patient, in any condition in safety.WHAT COULD BE DONE TO GET RESCUE OVER THAT? MOTORCYCLE AMBULANCE IS THE ANSWERTRAFFIC JAM IN KENYA4 minutes of delay in traffic jam reduces the survival rate from 70% to 7%, WHO reports. Category 1 calls (life-threatening situations) must have an ambulance in 7 minutes on average, and respond to 90% of Category 1 calls in 15 minutes (link of the source data at the end of the article). International guidelines, how to respond with an advanced EMS service in a difficult environment?A paramedic with ALS equipment for interventions in the Kenya Reduce the lives lost in kenya linked to delays in accessing first medical assistance is possible. The first problem is giving the ambulance service assistance nearly to the international standard times. EMS service we have came up with this innovative service: Of an Ambucycle to avoid the traffic jam problem. The idea came from Europe by other EMS services, but we as Seru Kenya have decided to create distinctive Ambucycle equipment. Small but also complete with all the preparedness for giving assistance within the golden hour as we wait for the Ambulance Service provider to arrive.First responder on motorcycle ambulance: a bolstering hope for Kenyans who are in need of prehospital care, from home or those in RTAs or in a disaster prone areas. Our Ambucycle are branded and fitted with the necessary rescue equipments from trauma kits and a skilled personnelThe bike operator is a skilled paramedic with all the necessary for a life-threatening intervention and trained Bike Paramedic who can handle any critical situation and would be able to save a life. The First Aid Ambucycle is operating in Kenya since 2020The two-wheeler paramedic service has been identified as a potential solution for life-threatening situations and prehospital care. As Seru Kenya we plan to reach the patient’s site within 16 minutes and stabilise the patient as we await for ambulance service provider. Our pilots were planned with 2 bikes sourced from existing some of our members to limit costs, resulting in a 30% lower cost. Bikes were strategically deployed at two locations with the highest call flows. The service was made free for a patient calling in to reduce decision-making time and make dispatch faster. Bikes were equipped with compliant equipments list with the added provision to manage more critical case; Our first responders were provided with hands-free gear to connect while handling the situation they were specifically shortlisted through an assessment process and trained by qualied EMSP organizations. Motorcycle ambulances and technology: this can be the brain of this revolution for the kenyan EMS service. In few months to come our the Ambucycle paramedics will stock AED,Oxygen tank, SPo2, suction unit, Basic Life Support kit or Advanced Life Support kit.We can start from the case-report to highlight the benefit of that solution. Thanks to the multi agencies and individual donations, the Ambucycle can be able to use the donated equipments even in the traffic jam. Our areas of operations are highly populated and with busy highways. By this for the house calls, RTAs we are able to reach at the scene by 15 min to 30 min at most. The emergency service providers and other government institutions if there can be one dispatch center this can better increase the life chance of survival. Our Ambucycle are dispatched using Beacon, which helps us to get the nearest responder either with a small phone or a bonyeza phone to reach at the scene with the shortest time possible .The introduction of bike ambulance will also have an important impact if the EMS service plans a strategic relocation with adequate medical equipment & trained staff to surpass heavy traffic and provide initial care.we operate in Kiambu county, Nairobi county, Nyeri county,Nakuru county and spreading our wings as time goes by.our hotline is: 0726 701 877Together for safety

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS AN AMBUCYCLE?
By FireMedic Kelvin

AUGUST 11, 2025

An ambucycle is a motorcycle that has been specially equipped with all of the medical supplies and equipment that an ambulance carries, with the exception of a stretcher, bed, and stair-chair. The purpose of the ambucycle is to circumvent traffic during medical emergencies and allow a trained first responder, EMT, paramedic, or doctor, to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency in the quickest possible time.

The difference in minutes saved by an ambucycle as opposed to a car or ambulance in cutting through traffic-congested streets or narrow alleyways can mean the difference between life and death.

The ambucycle was created after a terror attack took place on the crowded one-lane street on Friday night in Jerusalem in 2002. As a result of the location of the attack, ambulances were not able to access the scene of the emergency for more than an hour and emergency crews had to proceed on foot to reach those in need of medical care. A motorcycle was seen winding through the burnt vehicles and injured people on the narrow road-way and one of the EMTs at the scene thought that if this vehicle could make it through, why not put a trained responder with medical equipment on it. Over the past 17 years, ambucylces have become a mainstay of emergency services in Israel, while in Kenya it's our fourth year with both of the medical first response organizations utilizing.

Our responders can initiate CPR, Stabilize casualty on scene among others as we await for an ambulance to arrive The intervention has proved to be a crucial factor in saving lives.
