The ongoing construction of an Asphalt Concrete mixing plant in Eldoret City by the Governor Dr Jonathan Bii's administration is now 90 per cent complete.

According to Governor Bii, the plant will play a major role in helping the devolved unit to have more durable roads and reduce the cost of road maintenance.

County Executive Committee Member for Roads,Transport and Public Works Abraham Serem said this step will automatically position Uasin Gishu as a model for benchmarking for neighbouring counties in the larger Western part of Kenya.

He added that it will also boost the economy, enhance agricultural activities, and enable residents to access essential services more easily through an improved road network.

The implementation of key sports and health infrastructure projects in Uasin Gishu County has gained momentum, reinforcing the county’s commitment to achieving the aspirations of the Nguzo Kumi (Ten Pillars) development agenda championed by Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii.

Principal Secretary for Defence, Patrick Mariru, on Thursday inspected ongoing national government projects in Eldoret, including the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, the 64 Stadium, and the new 2,000-bed capacity facility at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).

The projects are expected to deliver far-reaching benefits to residents through improved sports development, healthcare access, employment creation, and economic growth.

The PS was received by Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor H.E Evans Kapkea, accompanied by County Executive Committee Members Robert Kemei (Sports) and Janet Koech (Health), alongside other county and national government officials.

At Kipchoge Keino Stadium, the team assessed progress of the ongoing works, which are currently about 70 percent complete. Once finalized, the facility will provide a modern platform for athletes, youth talent development, and hosting of major sporting events, supporting Governor Bii’s pillar on sports, youth empowerment, and talent development.

The Department of Environment and the Geographic Information System (GIS) Unit of the County Government of Uasin Gishu have launched a joint waste bin mapping exercise aimed at strengthening waste management across the county.

The exercise, which commenced with a training session for data collection teams, has started within Eldoret City's Central Business District (CBD) and will later be extended to other parts of the county.

The initiative forms part of Uasin Gishu County's commitment to promoting a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment through effective waste management practices. With rapid population growth and increased economic activity, the county has experienced a rise in waste generation in public spaces, including markets, streets, bus parks, recreational areas, and residential neighborhoods.

According to county officials the project seeks to establish a comprehensive inventory of litter bins by capturing key information such as their location, type, condition, and maintenance status.

Spearheading the exercise was Director for planning and Administration in Environment Kipchumba Arusei, who noted that The data collected will support planning, monitoring, and informed decision-making to improve waste collection services and enhance the management of public waste disposal facilities.

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant agencies to fast-track the completion of Eldoret's iconic Kipchoge Stadium.

Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea made the commitment while joining sports stakeholders on an inspection tour of the facility, which is currently undergoing modernization.

Kapkea said the county administration, under the leadership of Governor Dr Jonathan Bii, remains ready to fulfil its responsibilities, including matters relating to land, water and other support services required to facilitate the completion of the project.

"The county government is committed to playing its part to ensure the successful completion of this important facility that will serve generations of athletes and sports enthusiasts," said Kapkea.

Located in the heart of Kenya's athletics powerhouse, the North Rift region, Kipchoge Stadium is named after Kenya's athletics legend and pioneer, Kipchoge Keino.

The facility is among more than 30 stadiums being constructed and modernizationized under the national government's sports infrastructure development programme spearheaded by President Dr William Ruto.

Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo said the upgraded stadium will have a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators and is expected to be completed by December this year.

Once complete, the facility will significantly boost Kenya's capacity to host major regional and international sporting events while providing world-class training and competition grounds for athletes.

Present during the inspection were County Executive Committee Members Robert Kemei (Sports) and Edward Sawe (Lands), Eng Lucy Ng'endo (Education), Eldowas CEO Dr Lawrence Tarus, Chief Officer for Sports CPA Victorine Kapkiai, and representatives from Kenya Power.

Kipchoge Stadium has been identified as one of the key venues under the East African Pamoja Bid for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Uasin Gishu farmers are set to benefit from improved agricultural extension services, safer food production, and increased awareness on the responsible use of pesticides following plans by the County Government and the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) to strengthen their collaboration.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by a delegation from PCPB led by Board Chairperson Ali Ismael and Chief Executive Officer Fredrick Muchiri, Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii welcomed the partnership, saying that any initiative aimed at supporting Uasin Gishu farmers is highly appreciated.

He noted that agriculture is the backbone of the county's economy and that empowering farmers with knowledge, skills, and access to safe agricultural products will help increase productivity, improve incomes, and enhance food security.

The Governor emphasized the need for collaboration in training and building the capacity of Agricultural Extension Officers on pest control products to enable them to better support farmers across the county. He also called for the creation of platforms that will facilitate information sharing on the responsible use of pesticides and best agricultural practices.

Dr. Bii noted that the misuse of pesticides remains a major concern due to the potential risks posed to human health, livestock, and the environment. He said growing concerns over unsafe pesticide practices and their possible link to serious illnesses, including some forms of cancer, highlight the need for increased awareness, farmer training, and strict adherence to approved pesticide use guidelines.
