The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) today participated in the Baringo County Development Tour and Farmers' Engagement Programme, engaging farmers on sustainable agricultural practices and value chain development.

The event was graced by Dr.Kiprono Ronoh Paul, CBS,Principal Secretary for Agriculture, member of Parliament,Hon.Reuben Kiborek alongside national and county goveenment officials, farmers, development partners and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

The tour featured inspection of a water pan at ATC Koibatek, distribution of tea and avocado seedlings at Torongo Centre, farm visits in the Mwachon Tea Zone, and culminated in the official launch of the Sirwa Aggregation Centre and distribution of coffee seedlings to farmers.

The initiative underscores the Government's commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity, strengthening market access, and improving farmers' livelihoods in Baringo County.

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) participated in the opening of the Inaugural Trans Nzoia County Agricultural Exposition 2026 at the Manor House Agricultural Centre, Kitale, under the theme “Sustainable Agriculture and Youth Employment.”

The event was graced by Mr. Simon Mwombe, County Director of Agriculture, Trans Nzoia County, Mr. Cornelius Omuse, Founder and CEO of Adopt a Generation Africa (AGA), and Mr. David Mwangi, Director, Manor House.

AFA showcased its mandate and engaged farmers, youth, and stakeholders on sustainable agriculture, scheduled crop value chains, climate-smart farming, and opportunities for job creation. Discussions focused on the role of agriculture in driving employment, food security, and strategic partnerships for agricultural transformation.

The Expo provided a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and empowering youth through agriculture.

Agriculture and Livestock Development CS Sen. Mutahi Kagwe, alongside World Farmers Organization President Arnold Puech d’Alissac, today presided over the official opening of the World Farmers Organization (WFO) Annual Meeting 2026, currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya.

The forum presents a significant opportunity for Kenya to engage with global agricultural leaders, exchange experiences, and strengthen collaboration on key issues affecting the agricultural sector worldwide.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, CS Kagwe called for urgent global action to eliminate hazardous agricultural chemicals, urging stakeholders to end double standards that expose farmers in developing countries to products banned elsewhere due to health and environmental risks.

He emphasized the need for harmonised global standards, stronger regulation, and enhanced collaboration to curb unsafe and counterfeit farm inputs, while underscoring that protecting farmers’ health and wellbeing must remain central to agricultural policy and investment.

Present at the event was the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) leadership, led by Board Chair Hon. Cornelly Serem and Acting Director General Mr. Calistus Kundu, among other key stakeholders.

The Authority is actively participating in the forum through an exhibition showcasing its mandate in regulating, developing, and promoting scheduled crops in Kenya.

Through this platform, AFA is highlighting priority value chains, ongoing interventions aimed at enhancing productivity and market access, as well as its role in supporting farmers and agribusinesses to meet international standards and expand into global markets.

AFA Recognizes Top Coffee Cooperatives and Stakeholders in Embu

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has recognized outstanding coffee cooperative societies and stakeholders for their contribution to promoting quality, productivity, transparency and value addition within Kenya’s coffee value chain.

The recognition was made during the Coffee Stakeholders Awards Ceremony held in Embu County, bringing together farmers, cooperatives, processors and industry leaders to celebrate excellence in the sector.

Speaking at the event, AFA Acting Director General Calistus Kundu said coffee remains a key economic crop and a source of livelihood for approximately 800,000 households across the country. The Acting DG noted that coffee production is expected to increase following the Government's interventions to revitalize the sector, including the distribution of quality coffee seedlings to farmers. He emphasized that increased production, coupled with improved processing and value addition, will enhance farmer incomes and strengthen Kenya’s competitiveness in international markets.

The ceremony was graced by Embu County Deputy Governor H.E. Hon. Justus Kinyua Mugo, who highlighted the County Government’s investments in modernizing the coffee sector to improve productivity, quality yields, and farmer returns. He urged farmers and cooperative societies to embrace compliance with industry regulations and adopt best agricultural practices to maximize the benefits of coffee farming.

Also present was AFA Board Member Peterson Muthathai, HSC who delivered a speech on behalf of AFA Board Chairman Hon. Cornelly Serem. In his message, the Chairman commended cooperative societies that have embraced transparency, accountability, prudent financial management, and active member participation, describing these principles as critical for strengthening governance and ensuring farmers receive maximum benefits from their produce. He also applauded industry players who have invested in quality production, efficient processing, innovative marketing, and value addition.

The awards ceremony that recognized top-performing coffee producers, leading coffee cooperative societies and organizations championing value addition was attended by AFA Board members Lucy Maina Njine and Jirus Ombui among other invited guests.

As the world celebrates World Environment Day, The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) through Food Crops Directorate conducted a series of tree planting exercises in Nyamira and Migori Counties as part of its commitment to environmental conservation and the Presidential Directive.

In Nyamira County, the exercise was carried out at Riamanoti Primary School, Omoyo Girls Secondary School, and Menyenya Secondary School, while in Migori County, tree planting activities took place at Siala Technical Training Institute.

The initiative brought together students, staff, community members, and stakeholders in promoting environment restoration and climate resilience. Through such exercises, AFA continues to support the creation of greener learning institutions while contributing to national efforts to increase tree cover and safeguard the environment for future generations.

Stakeholders at a Macadamia Forum organized by the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) have lauded the steady growth of macadamia farmer cooperative societies, noting that the increased adoption of collective marketing is enhancing farmers' bargaining power, improving market access, and boosting returns from their produce.

The forum also highlighted the Government’s commitment to promoting value addition in the macadamia sector, following recent remarks by Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Sen. Mutahi Kagwe. During a meeting with officials from the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) and industry stakeholders, the Cabinet Secretary announced that the Government, through AFA, will support farmers by providing macadamia dryers through registered cooperatives, based on demand and formal requests from the farmers

In a move aimed at safeguarding farmer earnings and sustaining sector growth, stakeholders at the forum unanimously agreed to maintain the macadamia farm-gate price of at KSh 100 per kilogram. The decision reflects the sector’s commitment to protecting farmers’ interests while promoting sustainable production, value addition, and market competitiveness within Kenya’s macadamia industry.

Acting Director Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate Mr. John Adhola reiterated that the Government is actively engaging industry stakeholders to facilitate the clearance of accumulated macadamia stocks, thereby easing market challenges and improving farmer incomes.

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), through the Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD), today hosted the Board of TradeMark Africa (TMA) on a visit aimed at assessing the progress of the Mango Hot Water Treatment (HWT) project and other initiatives that TMA has supported.

The visit provided an opportunity for TMA Board to appreciate the impact of common user facilities, particularly in enhancing market access and value addition for small-scale farmers.

TradeMark Africa has been a key partner supporting AFA under the Business Environment and Export Enhancement Programme (BEEEP). This support, valued at over Ksh. 100 million, has been instrumental in advancing critical initiatives, including the completion of the Mango Hot Water Treatment Plant, the upgrade of the Kibwezi Packhouse, and the certification of the National Horticultural Centre (NHC) Packhouse.

This collaboration underscores AFA’s continued commitment to strengthening the horticulture industry through strategic partnerships that improve infrastructure, boost compliance with international standards, and enhance the competitiveness of Kenyan produce in global markets.

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) - Food Crops Directorate in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), this week participated in a tree planting exercise carried out in various schools across Bungoma and Busia counties. A total of 8,000 forest trees were planted during the excercise all aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainable agricultural ecosystems.

The activity supports the Presidential Directive on the National Tree Growing Restoration Campaign targeting the planting of 15 billion trees by 2032.

Through such collaborative initiatives, AFA continues to champion climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and the protection of natural resources that support agricultural productivity and food security.

Agriculture and Food Authority participated in the official opening of the 13th Edition of the International Floriculture Trade Exhibition (IFTEX) 2026. This event brings together floriculture stakeholders from various parts of the world.

The exhibition was officially opened by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry Hon. Lee Kinyanjui. Present also was the PS, State Department for Trade - Regina Ombam.
