LUSAKA HOSTS USAID-WESTERN KENYA WATER PROJECT TEAM

Governor Kenneth Makelo Lusaka has hosted a delegation from USAID- funded Western Kenya water project (WKWP) at his Office in Bungoma.

The discussion centred on partnership to increase sustainable access to water services while enabling better management of water resources in Bungoma.

The partnership which will run for five years, will see the county realize it's object of extending safe drinking water to every house in the county.

STAKEHOLDERS MEETING ON ACCESS TO ALTERNATIVE FUELS FOR COOKING AND PRODUCTIVE USE IN BUNGOMA, HELD

Practical Action East Africa in partnership with the Department of Environment Bungoma County, has held a Consultative meeting with stakeholders in the energy and environment sector on alternative fuels for cooking and productive use, to help harness
the transformational effects of clean affordable energy and to reduce avoidable deaths caused by smoke from indoor stoves and fires, at Wanangali Resort, Bungoma.

The Department of Environment and Practical Action aims at enabling more Bungoma residents to access clean cooking and modern energy that improves health, saves the environment, transforms lives and market development support for alternative fuel entrepreneurs.

Speaking during the function, CECM Environment, Hon. Renson Makheti noted that Bungoma county is keen on promoting smart energy and environmental conservation urging Practical Action East Africa to take advantage of the availability of the raw materials in Bungoma to promote the use of the alternative fuels like pellets.

Through this initiative, Practical Action has managed to train over 100 energy entrepreneurs in Bungoma on alternative energy in relation to Environment conservation and Health improvement.

The project has also reached 250,000 beneficiaries in Bungoma in the first phase.

DEPARTMENT OF WATER LAUNCHES NAMBOANI POLYTECHNIC WATER PROJECT IN MAENI

Chief officer water, Bungoma county government, Engineer Rosalia Soita accompanied by Chief Officer Health, Patrick Wandili and MCA, Hon. Florence Fulano, has launched the drilling of Namboani FYM Polytechnic water project in Maeni ward, Kimilili sub county.

This is the third borehole in the ambitious plan by the Department of Water to drill 45 boreholes in 45 wards, in 45 days, popularly knows as 45 in 45 Days

This project consist of a high calibre borehole that's projected to produce 3,000 litres of water per hour, serving a population of approximately 200 households in Maeni and the neighbouring community.

Phase two of this project will see the borehole equiped with a solar hybrid pumping system, community water point, pipeline distribution and a water kiosk.

MAKHETI INSPECTS THE ONGOING NAMATOTOA - NALONDO - CHEPKUBE WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

CECM Water, Hon. Renson Makheti in a company of Deputy county Secretary, Issac Mukenya and Chief officers Engineer Rosalia Soita and Abidan Kapchanga inspected the ongoing construction of Namatotoa - Nalondo - Chepkube water supply project in Cheptais.

The project which is set for completion in a months time is projected to produce 50,000 litres of water per day, serving a population of approximately 1,000 households, with Walanga Primary school, Namatotoa primary school, Mulukhu primary school, Nalondo dispensary, Nalondo Market and Nalondo police post, among those set to benefit.

The project components include upgrading spring to solar pumping scheme, underground sump of 15,000 litres, storage masonry tank of 50,000 litres and distribution lines.

The goal of this project is to increase the water coverage, access and reduce the walking distance to water collection points in Cheptais.

Currently Bungoma county is 100% done with Kibabii Sasuri water supply project within Kanduyi sub county in Tutii Marakaru and west Nalondo. The project serves a population of 42,950. Kamneru-Chebukwabi- Kibingei water supply project is substantially complete. This project is expected to supply water to 20,000 households in mt. elgon and Kimilili sub counties. Sitikho water project in Webuye West is also complete and functional serving a population of of 18,000 house holds.

All these projects are geared towards Governor Wangamati's commitment on ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water for all by 2022.

5,000 Tree seedlings planted in Mt. Elgon, Cheptais Forest.

Bungoma County Government in patnership with Kenya Forestry service have led Cheptais residents in a tree planting exercise that has seen over 5,000 tree seedlings planted in Cheptais forest, Mt. Elgon.
This planting exercise is in line with the government’s targets to achieve 10 per cent forest cover by 2022.

The variety of trees planted during the exercise include; The East African Green Heart, Elgon Teak, Olive tree, Podocarpus falcatus among other species.

Speaking during the occasion CECM Water, Environment, Tourism and Natural resources Hon. Renson Makheti urged the Community to have proper means to protect the seedlings to maturity.

“It is not just about planting trees now, it is about making sure that the planted trees attain maturity. I want to challenge you to practice Plant, Adopt, Grow formula, (PAG)" he said.

“The country targets to have a 10% tree cover by 2022, this goal requires a plan and a collective resolve to achieve it.” added Makheti.

Makheti thanked Equity Bank Bungoma branch for their support in the previous tree planting exercises across the county, adding that Partnering with other corporates in tree planting will be a significant boost as it will increase the forest cover of Bungoma county.

"We aim to have planted more than one million tree seedlings by 2022, that’s why we need more partners on board to help us achieve.’’ added Makheti.

Bungoma has so far planted a total of 319,000 tree seedlings for the last one year, standing the highest in tree cover in the entire western and Nyanza regions.

The event drew its participants primarily from, Kenya Forest Service personnel, Department of Environment County government of Bungoma, schools in Cheptais and the local community.

CECM water, Bungoma county government, Hon. Renson Makheti in the company of county Geologist, Velma Kenyi conducted
hydrogeological surveys in determining ground water point for borehole drilling at Siloba Shine RC Primary School in Kimaeti ward, Bumula, Nzoia Sugar Company Primary school in Bukembe East and St. Paul's Nzoia RC Secondary School in Maraka ward, webuye west.

This survey aims at fulfilling the SDG goal number 6 that's is line with Governor Wycliffe Wangamati's vision of ensuring access to clean and safe water to Bungoma residents by 2022.

Speaking during a public engagement at Bitobo Chief's camp, Makheti said County government is committed to ensure more people are accessed to clean water and each Sub County has a water project to achieve the target of all homesteads getting pipe water.

“We are committed to ensuring that all sub counties have a water project to ensure people get clean water at their doorstep,” he said.

CECM Water, Bungoma county government, Hon. Renson Makheti, today, officially handed over sites for the construction and protection of 8 springs across Sitikho ward.

This comes in at a time when water is crucial to Sitikho communities. The water from these projects will be used for domestic and small scale agricultural practices.

County government has been providing clean and safe drinking water to its residents through construction of mega water projects, construction of water lines, masonry water tanks, springs, boreholes and boreholes installed with solar power.

Speaking at Ngwelo when he interacted with locals who are set to benefit from this project, Makheti hinted on the plans to drill 3 boreholes at Mang'ana, Kakimanyi and Ngwelo adding that these projects will provide access to quality clean water for the residents.

25,000 TREE SEEDLINGS PLANTED AS BUNGOMA PATNERS WITH CORPORATES TO INCREASE FOREST COVER

Bungoma county government in patnership with Equity Bank Kenya and Kenya Forest service (KFS) has conducted a tree planting exercise across schools in Bungoma that has seen over 25,000 assorted tree seedlings planted this week and a total of 177,000 across the county since January 2021.

Flaging off the tree planting exercise at Sang'alo institute of science and technology, CECM Water, Environment, Tourism and Natural Resources, Hon. Renson Makheti,
thanked Equity Bank Bungoma branch Manager, Stephen Wasiche and the entire Equity family for their continuous support adding that Partnering with other corporates in tree planting will be a significant boost as it will increase the forest cover of Bungoma county.

"We aim to have planted more than one million tree seedlings by 2022, that’s why we need more partners on board to help us achieve.’’ added Makheti.

Acting Director of Climate change, Bungoma county government Jane Mukonambi, on her part, encouraged stakeholders to continue with the initiative of tree planting noting the importance of trees to livelihoods and the environment.

"Over the years, the weather has changed due to global warming, leading to changes in the weather patterns, this activity is aimed at informing the the community at large on the importance of environmental conversation". said Mukonambi

Department of Environment and Climate Change intends to domesticate indigenous tree species and other high-value tree crops such as fruit trees and retention of trees that deliver multiple ecosystem services.
This will help to increase forest cover, improve livelihoods through sale of timber and other tree products and provide food security. More importantly, it will reduce dependency as the communities living on the periphery of forests will concentrate on trees on their farms, and not the forests.

Bungoma’s forest cover stands the Highest in the entire Western and Nyanza Region, according to a comprehensive National Forest Resources Assessment and Mapping report by the service.

Other key agencies that the department of environment seeks to partner with include; Financial Institutions, Media houses, Private health facilities, Non-Governmental organizations, Kenya Water Towers Agency, Kenya Forestry Research Institute, the National Environment Management Authority among others.

Acting Director of Climate Change, Bungoma county government, Jane Mukonambi, today spent time with Kimaeti Farmers Organization to assess the preparedness of the CBO on climate change adaption and mitigation and if they meet the conditions for funding by World Bank under the climate change fund.

DEPARTMENT OF CLIMATE CHANGE MEETS GROUPS UNDERTAKING CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE IN BUNGOMA COUNTY

Department of Environment and Climate change, Bungoma county government, has held a consultative meeting with groups undertaking climate smart Agriculture and technological practices in Bungoma county.

The meeting which targeted groups from Kabuchai sub county aimed at assessing the barriers to adopting climate smart Agriculture and the level of preparedness to adapting climate change, mitigation and sustainable intensity in response to climate change.

Through the Climate change resilience fund, the county government of Bungoma intends to empowerment Community based groups across the county that practice climate smart Agriculture.

Speaking during the farm tour of one of the groups called WETPA, in Mukhweya, Kabuchai sub county, Acting Director of Climate change, Jane Mukonambi acknowledged the need to adopt sustainable climate change farming practices, saying the County government of Bungoma is ready to offer support to various groups in Bungoma to maximize benefits

CECM for Water, Environment, Tourism and Natural Resources, Hon. Renson Makheti today paid a courtesy call to Mr. Jang Hee Im, the new KOICA Country Director, at his office.

The two discussed among other issues broad partnership areas with the Korean Government, progress of KOICA II Water project in Bungoma, staff training and water development, which is a major sector in KOICA Kenya Office.

Currently, KOICA is in the process of starting the construction works for the Improvement of Water Supply System for Chepyuk Ward-Kibabii Complex water Project (KOICA II). This is the second phase project after KOICA implemented the first phase of improvement of Water Supply System in Chwele area and handed it over to the County Government in 2018.

The second phase of the project will cover Chepyuk Ward in Mt. Elgon area and Kibabii Complex which comprises of Kibabii University and the peri-urban area around the university. KOICA has also funded a Water Master Plan for the County Government of Bungoma which makes Bungoma one of the few Counties that have a Water Master Plan.

Hon. Makheti expressed gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Korea through KOICA for supporting water development in Bungoma County, noting that KOICA is the number one development partner in water sector in the County.

BUNGOMA COUNTY SET TO ACCESS KSH 6.7 BILLION AS COUNTY ASSEMBLY ADOPTS CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY

Bungoma County has joined the list of top counties in kenya to approve the Policy on Climate Change, opening access to 50 Million seed money for every ward per year for a period of three years totaling to Ksh 6.7 Billion, for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience building from Department for International Development (DFID).

The Fund will facilitate climate change financing in Bungoma through establishing climate finance mechanisms, facilitating
and planning for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the county planning and budgetary framework and also initiating and coordinating finance for climate change adaptation and mitigation activities at community level, among others.

This policy will ensure proper maintenance and conservation of the environment to help curb climate impacts. This will be achieved though the championing for climate smart agriculture, hence curbing malnutrition and water borne diseases that arise from both drought and floods.

The passing of this policy by the Bungoma County Assembly is very significant as it moves Bungoma County closer to accessing climate finance including the Green Climate Fund (GFC) which together with Bungoma's development budgets, will considerably increase the County's financial resources to mitigate climate change effects.

CECM Water, Environment, Tourism and Natural Resources, Hon. Renson Makheti, expressed optisim saying the policy will give a framework for actors in the environment sector to bring their synergies together for the benefit of Bungoma residents.

Acting Director for Climate change, Jane Mukonambi thanked the County Assembly members, the County leadership and non-state actors for the support through out the policy formulation process.

"We have come far and we are happy to be among the first counties to pass the policy, she said."

Other Policies that the select committee on Tourism, Water, Environment, and Natural Resources adopted include; Bungoma county climate change finance policy 2020 and Bungoma County Environmental and Social safeguard policy 2020.
