5,000 Tree seedlings planted in Mt. Elgon, Cheptais Forest.

Bungoma County Government in patnership with Kenya Forestry service have led Cheptais residents in a tree planting exercise that has seen over 5,000 tree seedlings planted in Cheptais forest, Mt. Elgon.
This planting exercise is in line with the government’s targets to achieve 10 per cent forest cover by 2022.
The variety of trees planted during the exercise include; The East African Green Heart, Elgon Teak, Olive tree, Podocarpus falcatus among other species.
Speaking during the occasion CECM Water, Environment, Tourism and Natural resources Hon. Renson Makheti urged the Community to have proper means to protect the seedlings to maturity.
“It is not just about planting trees now, it is about making sure that the planted trees attain maturity. I want to challenge you to practice Plant, Adopt, Grow formula, (PAG)" he said.
“The country targets to have a 10% tree cover by 2022, this goal requires a plan and a collective resolve to achieve it.” added Makheti.
Makheti thanked Equity Bank Bungoma branch for their support in the previous tree planting exercises across the county, adding that Partnering with other corporates in tree planting will be a significant boost as it will increase the forest cover of Bungoma county.
"We aim to have planted more than one million tree seedlings by 2022, that’s why we need more partners on board to help us achieve.’’ added Makheti.
Bungoma has so far planted a total of 319,000 tree seedlings for the last one year, standing the highest in tree cover in the entire western and Nyanza regions.
The event drew its participants primarily from, Kenya Forest Service personnel, Department of Environment County government of Bungoma, schools in Cheptais and the local community.
