Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) will conduct a water line repair at Carney Gate on Wednesday, June 17 through Thursday, June 18. As a standard precaution, a Boil Water Advisory for Main Base will go into effect immediately following the repair at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 and is expected to last approximately three days while water testing is completed and validated.
The water on base is safe to drink and use today and is continuously monitored through a daily testing program that meets or exceeds U.S. and Japanese safety standards. A Boil Water Advisory is a standard public health precaution required any time a water system temporarily loses pressure during a repair – it does not mean contamination has been found. Maintaining the community's trust and confidence is a top priority for the Navy, which is why we are sharing this information well in advance, providing a dedicated information hub, and creating direct opportunities to ask questions.
Here is what the community can expect:
• Monday, June 15: A water conservation advisory goes into effect to reduce demand on the system.
• Wednesday, June 17: Repair work begins are Carney Gate.
• Thursday, June 18: Repair work is completed at Carney Gate. The precautionary Boil Water Advisory begins at 6 p.m.
• June 18-21 (approx.): The repaired line is flushed and sampled. Results are tested and validated by certifying authorities.
• Advisory lifted: When test results confirm the water meets all required standards, the Boil Water Advisory will be lifted, and the community will be notified through official channels.
To support the community during the Boil Water Advisory, a bottled water distribution point will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, Thursday, June 11 through Sunday, June 21. The bottled water distribution site is Sanban Tower. Government ID is required. Someone else may pick up water on your behalf with valid ID, and pet owners are welcome to draw water for their animals. Please see the Bottled Water Distribution map at https://go.mil/cfay-water.
The repair at Carney Gate will affect vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the immediate area. Two-way traffic will remain open to the maximum extent possible, but drivers and pedestrians should expect detours, reduced speeds, and isolated, periodic closures. Gate status updates will be posted in advance of the repair period.
