作品解説
A Cube, a mathematical abstraction, and one of the 5 perfect Platonic solids, is
something that rarely exists in nature. This inhabitable sculpture references three things –
(1) My childhood love of soap bubbles and looking through them at a coloured and fractal world, and my adulthood understanding of soap bubble geometries as Voronoi-Delaunay-Dirichlet space-filling mathematics.
(2) Artist Yamazaki Tsuroko’s concept of Gutai/Cube as an enclosing space, placing a human inside a floating cube and assessing their emotion.
(3) The Japanese artisanal practice of shaping real watermelons into cubes for decoration and display imposing a human order on a natural object.
This work is a commentary on the Human-Nature interaction, of how we force our concepts on nature, and shape her forcefully to our ideas and innovations, just like I shaped the soap bubbles geometry into an architectural cube. It is also a call for us to go back to our childhood and rediscover the innocence and beauty of looking at the magic of nature and the mathematics hidden within it.
It is hoped that sunlight from outside would come inside it like Komorebi during the day, and that the artificial light inside would create beautiful patterns outside during the night.
立方体とは数学的抽象概念であり、5つの完全な正多面体の一つですが、自然界にはほとんど存在しません。この居住可能な彫刻は、3つのことを表しています。
(1) シャボン玉を通して色とりどりのフラクタルな世界を眺めていた、子どもの頃の私のシャボン玉に対する愛と、大人になってからの、ボロノイ・ドロネー・ディリクレの空間充填数学としてのシャボン玉の形状理解
(2) アーティストの山崎つる子が提唱する、人間を浮かぶ立方体の中に置いてその感情を測る、閉ざされた空間としての「具体／立方体」という概念
(3)装飾・展示用に本物のスイカを立方体に成形する、 自然物に人間の秩序を課す日本熟練の技
この作品は、人間と自然の相互作用、つまり、ちょうど私がシャボン玉の形状を建築的な立方体に成形したように、私たちが自然に自らの概念をいかに押し付け、自らのアイデアや革新に合わせて自然を強引に形作っているかについての批評です。これはまた、子どもの頃に戻って自然の魔法とそこに秘められた数学を見つめる純粋さと美しさを私たちに再発見するよう呼びかけるものでもあります。
日中は木漏れ日のように外からの太陽光が内部に差し込み、夜は内部の人工光が美しい模様を外部に描き出すことを願っています。
