Ninja title

Samurai were warriors who served their lords, fighting on the battlefield and participating in some political activities. Ninjas, on the other hand, were shadowy figures who engaged in espionage.

Ninjas were most active during the Sengoku period (Warring States period), and therefore served under daimyo (feudal lords) throughout Japan.

Furthermore, they had various names; in present-day Mie Prefecture, they were called igamono; in Shiga Prefecture, koukamono; in Niigata Prefecture, nokizaru; and in Yamanashi Prefecture, suppa, among others, and these ninjas engaged in espionage.

Ninjas, operating in the darkness, would place the scabbard of their sword on the tip of their blade to spot their enemies. The important thing was not to miss even the slightest sound.

KuroKuwamono

During the Sengoku period (Warring States period), samurai of lower rank used mass-produced swords called "Kazuuchimono" or "Tabagatana."

Furthermore, weapons and armor left behind on the battlefield were taken back as spoils of war by the victors, while the remaining items were handled by a group called "KuroKuwamono," who were responsible for disposing of the bodies and recovering the weapons.

The "KuroKuwamono" were a group engaged in civil engineering work such as castle construction, land reclamation, and road construction, but it's possible that ninjas were also hiding there to conduct espionage.

Zasagashi no jutsu

The "Zasagashi no jutsu" is a method of locating an enemy that utilizes the straight shape and long cord of a ninja sword.

The technique involves sliding the sword's scabbard to the point of the blade, holding one end of the Sageo(cord) in the mouth, and releasing the Sageo when the enemy touches the tip of the scabbard, dropping the scabbard from the sword, and thrusting the sword at the opponent. The art of finding an enemy in the dark and maintaining distance makes it difficult to be attacked.

However, it is uncertain whether ninja swords actually existed.

The Sword Ladder Technique

Ninja swords, unlike the curved swords used by samurai, are straight.

There is a theory that their straight shape made them useful for infiltrating enemy territory.

In the writings of the Kusunoki-ryu, which follows the tradition of "Kusunoki Masashige's Villains" (which I introduced previously), there is a method called the "Sword Ladder Technique" for climbing walls or stone walls about the height of oneself. The method involves placing one's foot on the tsuba (handguard), and after climbing, pulling up the sageo (cord) to retrieve the sword.

However, it is uncertain whether ninja swords actually existed.
