Notice: Cancellation of the Hitome Senbon Zakura Festival

The Hitome Senbon Zakura Festival in Shibata-machi and Ogawara-machi will be canceled to prevent the transmission of the new coronavirus.
There will be no food court or beverage corner this year, but you still can stroll this scenic area, boasting 1,200 cherry trees along the Shiroishi Riverside and 1,300 cherry trees at Funaoka Castle Ruins Park.
Please enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom!

It's now or never! Come visit the Hitomesenbon Zakura before the festival ends on 4/18. Start your journey at either Ogawara or Funaoka Station on the JR Tohoku Line and walk along the river while enjoying the great views. There is a nightly illumination as well.

Cherry Blossom Update: 50% in bloom
As of yesterday, the blossoms are about 50% in bloom, with trees by the river further along than those on higher ground. We expect the peak will be mid-week, so consider coming to join us on a weekday. The grounds around the Funaoka Castle Ruins Park are illuminated nightly until 9pm and there are nearby food stands as well.

This year's sakura matsuri (cherry blossom festival) will be from 4/3 to 4/18. Head to the river during the festival period to see the sakura, take a boat ride down the river (1500 yen), and see sakura illuminated at night (18:00-22:00).

The exact time the flowers will be in bloom is not known, so watch this page for updates.

Special Monitor Tour Opportunity:
Winter Illumination and Izakaya-hopping in Ogawara!

We’re looking for participants to help us out on Saturday, Dec 15th or 22nd 16:00-22:00, in Ogawara / 大河原町 (30 min. south of Sendai by local train)
We pay for travel expenses and give you 4000 yen to use your drinks and dinner at Izakaya. If you are willing to join, kindly DM Ulala Tanaka for further detail.

Date: Saturday, December 15th or December 22nd
Participants wanted: 2 for Dec 15th., 3 for Dec. 22nd
Requirements: Age 20 and over, willing to drink

=====Meeting Point and Timetable======

Saturday, December 15th OR December 22nd from 4PM to 10PM

MEETING POINT: Sendai station in front of the Stained glass at 15:45 PM on that day.

TIMETABLE

15:45 Meet at Sendai Station
16:00 Travel to Ogawara station by train
17:00 Walk along the sight of beautifully illuminated cherry trees. Enjoy Izakaya Hopping（We give you 4000 yen / per person to use at Izakaya freely）
20:15 Give us your feedback
21:12 Return train to Sendai Station

*The purpose of this tour is to more effectively develop local tourism at night in Ogawara. By analyzing the results of this survey and understanding any issues, the town can promote the development of a more welcoming environment for international tourists.

Hitome Senbon Zakura Finished for 2018!
Thank you to the many people who joined us in celebration of the beautiful cherry blossoms. They bloomed earlier than expected this year, and the attached picture shows how it looks today.

All is not over, though. "Flower Town Shibata" actually has flowers throughout the year. Be sure to visit Funaoka Castle Ruins Park in June for hydrangea, in late September for the "Red Magic Lily Festival" and in October come to see the Miyagi Chrysanthemum Exhibition. Funaoka Station is just 30 minutes from Sendai by the JR Tohoku Line (500 yen).

At Shibata-machi, volunteering junior high school students will show you around as “Volunteer English Guides”!

They are from a English club of a local junior high school. They have worked hard for a year for this. So it’s a big day for the Shibata kids!

They can be found at Funaoka Castle Ruins Park and Funaoka Station. Why not look for them and enjoy a pleasant conversation with local kids?
