Oppoji Temple - An Ancient Temple Boasting a History of Around 1,300 Years

Oppoji Temple in Tainai City was founded in 736.
Many people visit to pray for their wishes to be fulfilled and for a peaceful and healthy life.

Its main highlight is the three-storied pagoda built in 1620, designated as a national important cultural property thanks to its beautiful pure Japanese-style architecture.
Furthermore, in this season, its collaboration with hydrangeas is very photogenic!
There aren't many hydrangeas, but if you take a photo of them with the three-storied pagoda, it will let you feel the early summer in Japan.

In addition, there are many other highlights such as the Niomon gate, which was renovated in 1745, and the central hall, the Dainichido!

Be sure to visit at least once!

The Komaneko at Nanbu Shrine in Nagaoka City - A Must-See for Cat Lovers!

At most Japanese shrines, the entrance is guarded by stone lion-dog statues known as "komainu," which are believed to ward off evil spirits. However, at Nanbu Shrine in Nagaoka City, visitors are welcomed instead by "komaneko," cat statues!

Historically, this area was known for silk farming, and cats played an essential role in protecting silkworms from mice. Because of this, cats were revered as protectors against rodents and as symbols of good fortune.

Today, you can still find charming moss-covered komaneko statues within the shrine grounds. Their gentle expressions create a truly photogenic scene that blends history, folklore, and a love of cats.

The Impressive 150-Year-Old Great Wisteria of the Northern Culture Museum and Ito Estate!

The Northern Culture Museum and Ito Estate in Niigata City is a museum that teaches the history of the Ito family, the largest landowner in Echigo (now Niigata Prefecture), as well as the local culture of Niigata.
In its roughly 29,000㎡ grounds, you can appreciate buildings such as the main residence, the tea house, and the warehouse, as well as a Japanese-style garden that is beautiful in every season and works of art collected by the former heads of the household.

The most popular sight at the Northern Culture Museum and Ito Estate in spring is the 150-year-old great wisteria in the garden, with a trunk circumference of more than 160 centimeters. The light purple wisteria flowers, stretching over a 260㎡ trellis, are incredibly beautiful!

The blooming period is from early to mid-May, and a light up event is held at the same time.

Kamo River - See Koinobori, a Japanese Custom That Began Over 300 Years Ago!

About 500 carp-shaped streamers, called koinobori, dance in the skies over the Kamo River in Kamo City from mid-April to early May!

In Japan, May 5 is a public holiday named "Children's Day," a day to pray for the healthy growth of children. On this day, there is a tradition of hanging koinobori to wish for the children to grow up strong and perseverant, like a carp that keeps swimming even through raging waters.

The colorful koinobori look as if they are swimming towards the sky, creating a very beautiful sight. On holidays, the place is bustling with many families. If you are planning on visiting Niigata during this period, be sure to stop by and visit the Kamo River!

A Hidden Spiritual Spot: Asaiino Shrine with 1,700 Years of History

Located in Agano City, Asaiino Shrine has a history spanning approximately 1,700 years.
The shrine is dedicated to a deity of abundant blessings who is said to have first introduced rice cultivation to this region.

Deeper within the grounds stands a large, round sacred stone known as the “Goshinreiishi,” unearthed from a nearby sacred mountain. For generations, it has been believed that those who touch this stone will be blessed with good fortune.
One of the shrine’s most distinctive traditions is its custom of “osagari,” gifts bestowed by the deity. Items such as "omikuji" fortune slips and lucky candies are provided free of charge to visitors as tokens of blessing.

Why not experience the quiet, mystical atmosphere and spend a moment of peaceful reflection here?
