The Council for Cultural Affairs has selected Hikone Castle in Shiga Prefecture as Japan’s nominee for UNESCO World Heritage status, advancing a bid that has remained on the country’s tentative list for more than three decades.
Construction of the castle began in 1604 under the direction of the Tokugawa shogunate. It was completed some 20 years later.
