The Embassy of Malta in Japan extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Hon. Chris Fearne on his appointment as Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Malta. We look forward to working closely with him to advance our bilateral relations, promote Malta’ s interests, and strengthen partnerships in the Asia Pacific region.

We would also like to extend our appreciation for the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, the Hon. Dr. Ian Borg. The contribution Dr. Borg has made to the Ministry in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful, and successful. Our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence, and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field. We wish him well in his new role as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health.

Today, 17 May, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), Malta 🇲🇹 stands as an ally with all LGBTIQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 persons worldwide. Discrimination and violence are never acceptable – anywhere, ever.

ついにユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテストのグランドファイナルがやってきました！今年のマルタ🇲🇹代表はエイダンです✨

ユーロビジョンは、毎年ヨーロッパ中を熱狂させる世界最大の音楽コンテストです。1956年から続く歴史あるイベントで、各国代表アーティストがパフォーマンスを披露し、頂点を目指して競い合います👏

グランドファイナルは5月16日（現地時間）、公式YouTubeチャンネル📺でライブ配信されます✨

The grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest has finally arrived! This year's representative for Malta🇲🇹 is Aidan✨

Eurovision is the world's biggest music contest, which sets Europe ablaze with excitement every year. It's a historic event that's been running since 1956, where representative artists from each country take to the stage, performing and competing to reach the top👏

The grand final will be live-streamed on the official YouTube channel📺 on 16 May (local time)✨

波の彼方に投げ出された小さな命と、分断への問い

幼いテオは、マルタの船乗りの家族とともにシムシャー号で初めての航海に出るが、漁船は沈没し、乗組員たちは地中海に取り残される。同じ海域では、アフリカからの移民を救助した商船に派遣された医療従事者のアレックスが、受け入れをめぐる各国の判断のはざまで立ち往生していた。やがて2つの出来事は交錯し、極限の漂流の果てに取り返しのつかない喪失と、ただ1人の生還が浮かび上がる。実話をもとに、海を越えて揺れる命と境界を描きながら、移民をめぐる分断へと問いを投げかける。アカデミー賞外国語映画賞選出作品。

🇯🇵 スピテリ大使の日本での任期終了にあたり、駐日マルタ共和国大使館は、これまでマルタと日本の友好関係の発展にご協力いただいたすべての皆様に心より感謝申し上げます。🇲🇹🇯🇵

スピテリ大使は、2020年に駐日マルタ共和国大使館が東京に開設された後、初代駐日マルタ共和国特命全権大使として着任し、両国関係の新たな節目に携わりました。

在任中は、外交、文化、教育、観光、経済分野をはじめ、人と人との交流促進に尽力するとともに、マルタ・日本外交関係樹立60周年や2025年大阪・関西万博へのマルタ参加にも取り組みました。

また、1862年に日本からマルタへ贈られた侍甲冑の修復事業、マルタ・日本ワーキングホリデー制度の実現、学術・経済交流の拡大など、両国関係を象徴する様々な取り組みを推進しました。

駐日マルタ共和国大使館は、スピテリ大使の献身的な活動に感謝するとともに、エジプト駐箚マルタ共和国次期大使としての今後のご活躍を心よりお祈り申し上げます。

🇬🇧 As Ambassador André Spiteri concludes his diplomatic posting in Japan, the Embassy of Malta extends its sincere gratitude to all friends, partners, institutions, and colleagues who contributed to strengthening the Malta–Japan relationship over the past years. 🇲🇹🇯🇵

Ambassador Spiteri had the honour of serving as Malta’s first resident Ambassador to Japan following the opening of the Embassy of Malta in Tokyo in 2020 — an important milestone in the history of bilateral relations between Malta and Japan.

During his tenure, efforts were made to deepen cooperation across diplomacy, culture, education, tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchanges, while also commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malta and Japan and supporting Malta’s successful participation at Expo 2025 Osaka.

Among the initiatives promoted during this period were the restoration of the historic samurai armour gifted to Malta in 1862, the conclusion of the Malta–Japan Working Holiday Arrangement, and the expansion of academic and business exchanges between both countries.

The Embassy thanks Ambassador Spiteri for his dedication and wishes him every success in his new role as Ambassador-Designate of Malta to Egypt.

駐日マルタ共和国大使館は、日比谷図書文化館にて、イリーナ・ババノヴァ監督によるドキュメンタリー映画『Forging Bonds: The Restoration of Samurai Armour』の特別上映会を開催しました。

本作品は、ヘリテージ・マルタの協力のもと、1862年の文久遣欧使節をきっかけにマルタへ渡った3領の日本甲冑が、160年以上の時を経て2023年に日本へ戻り、日本の伝統技術によって修復された軌跡を描いています。

大阪・関西万博マルタ館および姫路城での展示を経て、甲冑は現在マルタへ戻り、再び一般公開されています。

本イベントには、日本国外務省関係者、各国外交団、文化・学術関係者、メディア関係者など多くの皆様にご出席いただきました。

本プロジェクトは、マルタと日本の友情、文化協力、そして職人技の素晴らしさを象徴する特別な取り組みとなりました。

The Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Japan hosted a special screening of the documentary “Forging Bonds: The Restoration of Samurai Armour” directed by Irina Babanova at the Hibiya Library & Museum in Tokyo.

Produced with the support of Heritage Malta, the film follows the remarkable journey of three sets of Japanese samurai armour that arrived in Malta following the 1862 Japanese Embassy to Europe, and which returned to Japan in 2023 after more than 160 years to be restored using traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Following their exhibition at the Malta Pavilion during Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai and at Himeji Castle, the armours have now returned to Malta and are once again on public display.

The event was attended by representatives of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the diplomatic corps, cultural and academic figures, and media representatives.

This unique project stands as a powerful symbol of friendship, cultural cooperation, and craftsmanship between Malta and Japan.

🇯🇵 アンドレ・スピテリ駐日マルタ共和国大使はこのたび鹿児島県を訪問し、塩田知事、鹿児島市の下鶴市長、鹿児島大学関係者、ならびに鹿児島商工会議所の皆様と有意義な会談を行いました。

今回の訪問では、観光、教育、文化交流、学術連携、経済協力などの分野におけるマルタと鹿児島との連携強化について意見交換が行われました。

また、19世紀末に鹿児島で英語教師として活動したロジャー・ジュリアス・イングロットをはじめ、マルタと鹿児島を結ぶ歴史的なつながりについても紹介されました。

駐日マルタ共和国大使館は、今回築かれた鹿児島との友好関係が今後さらに発展していくことを期待しております。

鹿児島県の皆様の温かいご歓迎とご厚意に、心より感謝申し上げます。

🇬🇧 Ambassador André Spiteri recently visited Kagoshima Prefecture, where he held meaningful meetings with Governor Shiota, Mayor Shimotsuru of Kagoshima City, representatives of Kagoshima University, and the Kagoshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Throughout the visit, discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Malta and Kagoshima in tourism, education, culture, academic exchange, and economic collaboration.

The Ambassador also referred to the historical links connecting Malta and Kagoshima, including Roger Julius Inglott, one of the earliest Maltese individuals to live and work in Japan, who taught English in Kagoshima in the late nineteenth century.

The Embassy of Malta looks forward to further developing the friendly relations established with Kagoshima in the years ahead.

The Embassy of Malta expresses its sincere appreciation to all counterparts in Kagoshima for their warm hospitality and generous welcome.

🇯🇵 アンドレ・スピテリ駐日マルタ共和国大使は、カシャ副館長とともに、山下雄平農林水産副大臣を表敬訪問し、これまでの温かいご支援とご厚情に対し、心より御礼を申し上げました。特に、日本・マルタ友好議員連盟の設立と発展におけるご尽力に、改めて深い敬意を表しました。

農林水産分野においても、本マグロをはじめとする協力関係は、両国間の強い信頼と高い品質基準を体現する重要な柱であり、今後さらなる発展が期待されます。

🇬🇧 The Ambassador of Malta to Japan, H.E Mr André Spiteri, accompanied by Deputy Head of Mission Dr Corinne Casha, held a meeting with the State Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Hon. Yuhei Yamash*ta. Ambassador Spiteri expressed his sincere appreciation for the warm support and goodwill extended throughout his tenure.

Ambassador Spiteri also conveyed his deep respect for Hon. Yamash*ta’s important contribution to the Malta Parliamentary Friendship Group in Japan.

Cooperation in the field of agriculture and fisheries—particularly in areas such as bluefin tuna—continues to reflect the strong trust and high standards shared between Malta and Japan, with promising prospects for further development.

本日、駐日マルタ共和国大使 アンドレ・スピテリ閣下は、昭和時代の幕開けから100年を記念する式典に出席する光栄に浴しました。
本式典には、天皇皇后両陛下をはじめ、内閣総理大臣、政府関係者、国会議員の皆様がご臨席され、日本の歴史、歩み、そして未来への発展を改めて考える厳粛かつ意義深い機会となりました。

Today, H.E. Mr André Spiteri, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Japan, had the honour of attending the official ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Shōwa era.
The ceremony, held in the presence of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, as well as the Prime Minister, senior government officials, and members of the National Diet, offered a solemn and meaningful moment to reflect on Japan’s history, resilience, and continued progress.
