President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi formally elevated Philippines–Japan relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during a signing ceremony and joint press conference in Tokyo, marking what both leaders described as a new and higher tier of cooperation anchored on shared values, strategic alignment, and mutual trust.
The elevation of ties reflects the growing importance of Philippines–Japan cooperation amid an increasingly complex regional and global security environment, as both nations reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. President Marcos and Prime Minister Takaichi also announced the commencement of negotiations for an agreement on the protection of classified military information and for the delimitation of maritime boundaries between the two countries, further strengthening bilateral defense and maritime cooperation.
The two leaders likewise witnessed the signing of the agreement on the elimination of double taxation, expected to promote greater investments and economic exchanges between the Philippines and Japan. Expanding cooperation across emerging and strategic sectors, Manila and Tokyo also committed to deepen collaboration in agriculture, disaster risk reduction, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, satellite data, space cooperation, and human resource development as both countries move toward a broader and future-oriented partnership.
