Embassy of the Lao PDR to Japan organized a culture and tourisim promotion event on 25th August 2026 at the Embassy, attended by 55 Japanese. In the event, H.E. Mr. AMPHAY KINDAVONG, Ambassador of the Lao PDR to Japan briefed about country of the Lao PDR, the unique and the beautiful traditions and culture of Laos, particularly the unique costumes of Lao women, traditional foods and tourist attractions in the Lao PDR. In addition, Ambassador AMPHAY also briefed on bilateral relations between the Lao PDR and Japan, in particular the exchange of visits between the two countries’ leaders, such as the visit to Japan by Lao President in 2025 and the Prime Minister of Laos in 2025 and 2026, inculding Princess Aiko’s visit to the Lao PDR in November 2025. Princess Aiko also paid an honorable visit to the Lao Embassy in Tokyo in January and attended the opening ceremony of the Laos Festival 2026. On this occasion, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG invited Japanese people to further travel to Lao PDR in the future. The participants explored and experienced the Lao cultural exhibition at the Embassy such as: Pha Khuan, traditional handicraft, model racing boat, traditional loom, xylophone and traditional ethic costumes. They also enjoyed Lao traditional food and practiced performance of the Lamvong Lao certified by the UNESCO as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage.

On 27 August 2026, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG received a courtesy call from a group of 21 Lao students who received scholarships by the Japanese government under the Project for Human Development Scholarship (JDS) for the 2026 fiscal year. On this occasion, the Ambassador extended his warm congratulations to all the students on receiving the scholarships and advised them to focus on their studies and gain knowledge from Japan to develop their nation and organizations in the future. Furthermore, the Ambassador emphasized the importance of unity, mutual assistance and care among the students during their stay and study in Japan, while wishing them all great success in their studies and research.

On August 26, 2026, H.E. Mr. Amphay KINDAVONG, Ambassador of the Lao PDR to Japan, hosted a working lunch for the Rizin Fighting Federation of Japan, led by Mr. Toshiyuki Kimura, Advisor to the Federation, to discuss future cooperation between the Embassy of the Lao PDR in Japan and the Federation.
The Rizin Fighting Federation of Japan is an organization that promotes and organizes mixed martial arts (MMA) and boxing events. The delegation included Mr. Shoma Shibisai, a prominent Japanese boxer of Lao descent, whose father is Lao and mother is Japanese.
Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed his pleasure at meeting a prominent Japanese athlete of Lao descent. The meeting also discussed potential cooperation for the Laos Festival 2027, particularly the possibility of Mr. Shoma Shibisai giving a martial arts performance on stage during the festival.
On this occasion, Mr. Toshiyuki Kimura, Advisor to the Rizin Fighting Federation, expressed his willingness to support the Laos Festival next year. He also informed the Ambassador of his plans to visit the Lao PDR to promote Rizin’s martial arts activities and explore opportunities for young Lao people interested in martial arts to receive training in Japan and develop their skills to compete at the regional and international levels.

On the evening of August 24, 2026, H.E. Mr. Amphay KINDAVONG, Ambassador of the Lao PDR to Japan, led the staff of the Lao Embassy to attend the U12 Junior Soccer World Challenge 2026 final between Mazda Laos GB FC and FC Barcelona from Spain held at the Fukuda Electronic Arena Stadium, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

The result of the match was that Mazda Laos GB FC defeated FC Barcelona with a score of 3-2 and achieved first place of the U12 Junior Soccer World Challenge 2026. On this occasion, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG expressed his sincere congratulations and appreciation to the Mazda Laos GB FC football team for seizing the champion of the U12 Junior Soccer World Challenge 2026, which has brought honor and reputation to the Lao PDR on the regional and international stage. Ambassador Amphay also encouraged Lao youth to have a passion for playing sports and strive to train to advance to the international stage even more in the future.

On August 19, 2026, H.E. Mr. Amphay KINDAVONG, Ambassador of the Lao PDR to Japan, accompanied by the Embassy staff, visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Tokyo to congratulate the 81st anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day. Ambassador Amphay was warmly received by H.E. Mr. Pham Quang Hieu, Ambassador of Vietnam to Japan, along with his embassy staff. Ambassador Amphay expressed his deep gratitude to the Party, State, and people of Vietnam for their profound condolences extended to the passing of Comrade Xaysomphone PHOMVIHANE, Member of the Politburo of the Party Central Committee and the President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR, noting their attendance at the funeral and wreath-laying ceremonies in both Laos and Vietnam. He also thanked Ambassador Hieu for signing the book of condolences at the Lao Embassy last week.
Ambassador Hieu expressed his appreciation to Ambassador Amphay and the Lao Embassy staff for the visit on this important occasion, highlighting the close, longstanding ties between the two parties, two states, and two embassies in Tokyo. He also informed that August 19 is also a great historic significance as the day of the Revolution’s victory, which paved the way for the Declaration of Independence and the founding of Vietnam on September 2, 1945.

On August 20, 2026, at the Embassy of the Lao PDR in Japan, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG and Embassy’s staff held a consultative meeting with the Honorary Consuls of the Lao PDR in Japan, which consists of five Honorary Consuls, namely the Honorary Consuls of the Lao PDR in Kyoto, Okinawa, Hakodate, Nagoya, and Fukuoka.
This is the third consultative meeting between the Embassy and the Honorary Consuls of the Lao PDR in Japan to review and evaluate the performance of the Honorary Consuls, in which the Honorary Consuls briefed on their past activities and future plans. The Honorary Consuls have been actively involved in promoting Lao-Japanese cooperation in many sectors, including human resource development, agriculture, and health, including grants and projects to develop Lao products with local communities in the Lao PDR.
On this occasion, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG expressed his appreciation for the active activities of the honorary consuls, which have contributed to the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR and the strengthening of friendly relations between Lao PDR and Japan. Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG reiterated that the honorary consuls should review the roles, duties and regulations of the honorary consuls and encouraged them to continue to actively carry out their roles. He also proposed the honorary consuls to submit quarterly reports on their activities to the Embassy on a regular basis, and proposed that more activities be organized to promote investment, trade, tourism and Lao skills development in the future.

On August 8, 2026, in Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture, H.E. Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG, along with his spouse and accompanying members, met with Mayor Yukishige Okubo and members of the Nagasaki-Laos Friendship Association for a working lunch during his attending the Nagasaki Peace Ceremony. Mayor Okubo welcomed the Ambassador’s second visit to Isahaya, sharing outcomes from his 2025 visit to the Lao PDR and highlighting progress toward establishing a sister-city relationship between Isahaya City and Pakse City and plans for a future visit to Laos.
Ambassador Amphay thanked the Mayor and the Association for their warm welcome, acknowledging Mayor Okubo’s participation in the opening ceremony of the Laos Festival 2026 in May. He praised the city’s proactive efforts in strengthening bilateral relations and extended congratulations to the former and the new President of the Friendship Association. The two sides also discussed ways to expand future cooperation and exchanges between Isahaya City and Laos. Following the meeting, the Ambassador and his delegation toured the Isahaya City Museum and local historical sites.

On 7 August 2026, Fukuoka Prefecture, H.E. Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG, along with his spouse and accompanying members, met for a working dinner with Mr. Masahiko Hiroishi and Mr. Takumi Yahata, Counselors to the Lao Honorary Consul in Fukuoka, alongside Mr. Toshihiro Kai, a member of the Fukuoka-Laos Friendship Association. During the dinner, Ambassador Amphay expressed his sincere gratitude for their ongoing support, particularly in organizing the Lao Festival 2026 and supporting the Embassy’s event over the past years. The Ambassador took this opportunity to present a government certificate of appreciation to the Lao Honorary Consulate in Fukuoka, recognizing its valuable contributions to Laos’s socio-economic development and the deepening friendship between the two nations on the occasion of the the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and Japan. He also encouraged the Honorary Consul to attend the upcoming annual meeting of Lao Honorary Consuls in Japan, scheduled for August 20, 2026, at the Embassy. In addition, Ambassador Amphay shared the plans regarding the participation of Lao athletes in the 2026 Asian Games and Asian Para Games between September and October, in Aichi Prefecture, as well as the participation of Laos in the Green Yokohama Expo 2027.
In response, representatives from the Honorary Consulate and the Friendship Association highlighted their recent efforts to support Laos and foster cultural exchange. These included a 2025 visit to Laos, donations to the Lao Friends Hospital for Children in Luang Prabang, and ongoing support for the Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) BRIDGE Summer Camp in Fukuoka, which welcomes 11-year-old students from Laos and countries across the Asia Pacific region for cultural exchange every year.

On August 7, 2026, H.E. Mr. Amphay KINDAVONG, Ambassador of the Lao PDR to Japan and accompanying members, attended the ASEAN Committee in Tokyo (ACT) Meeting held in Hiroshima Prefecture. The meeting brought together heads of mission and representatives from ASEAN member states and chaired by H.E. Mr. ONG Eng Chuan, Ambassador of Singapore. Participants exchanged views on current developments in Japan, including recent Japanese Diet sessions and public approval ratings for the cabinet. The committee was also briefed on the outcomes of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings, held in the Philippines in July 2026. Furthermore, the meeting reviewed upcoming ACT activities, including the ACT Family Day and a bowling tournament. These two events will be organized by the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam and the Embassy of Indonesia, respectively.
On the same day, Ambassador Amphay received a briefing on the background and activities of the Hiroshima-ASEAN Association, along with a lecture on the impact of the atomic bomb on Southeast Asian citizens, specifically those who came to study in Japan during WWII. The Ambassador also gave an interview to the Chairman of the Hiroshima-ASEAN Association and attended a welcoming reception, where he engaged with local authorities, parliamentarians, business persons, civil society representatives, and Lao students who is studying in Hiroshima.
While the ASEAN Committee in Tokyo typically convenes every two months in the capital, but this special session was hosted in Hiroshima Prefecture with the generous support and coordination of the Hiroshima-ASEAN Association.
