On 12 April 2026, the Embassy of the Lao PDR in Tokyo held a celebration for the Lao New Year B.E. 2569, attended by 250 guests, including Lao citizens who are living, studying and working in Japan and Japanese people. The ceremony began with traditional Buddhist ceremonies, including worshiping, almsgiving, offering food to monks and the Baci ceremony following Lao customs. After that, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG and Spouse led the Lao and Japanese guests to pour water on the Buddha statues to wash away bad luck from the past year and welcome good fortune for the New Year.
On this occasion, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG delivered New Year’s greetings and expressed his gratitude for the support and contributions of the Lao people and Japanese friends to today’s event. The Ambassador highlighted the achievements of the Lao PDR in 2025, specially the celebration of three historic milestones, including the 70th Anniversary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the 50th Anniversary of the National Day of the Lao PDR, the 105th Birth Anniversary of President Kaysone PHOMVIHANE, as well as the 80th Anniversary of Lao Diplomacy and the outcomes of the 12th Party Congress.
In addition, the Ambassador also emphasized that 2026 is a historic year as the Lao PDR will graduate from Least Developed Country status, which is the result of the leadership of the Party and Government and the cooperation of all Lao people. Furthermore, the Ambassador also highly evaluated the growing friendship between the Lao PDR and Japan, and expressed sincere thanks to the Japanese government and people for their continuous support, especially both sides have successfully celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The Ambassador also praised the Lao community in Japan for acting as "cultural ambassadors" by sharing beautiful Lao traditions and building a good reputation for the country. Following his remarks, the Ambassador invited all guests to join a New Year’s toast in a friendly and warm atmosphere.
The event featured a violin performance of the song "O Duang Champa" by a young Lao community, followed by traditional Lam Vong and Baslop dancing, which the Lao and Japanese guests enjoyed together. In addition to the fun activities, guests enjoyed authentic Lao food and Beer Lao, which impressed all participants. This Lao New Year celebration is not only about preserving the fine traditions of the Lao PDR, but also about spreading Lao culture to Japanese and international friends and strengthening the solidarity and friendship between the people of the Lao PDR and Japan.

From 6 to 8 April 2026, H.E. Mr. Amphay KINDAVONG, Ambassador of the Lao PDR to Japan attended the Opening Ceremony of the 9th Buddhist Summit and the Grand Ceremony of International Buddhist Day 2026 in Hyogo Prefecture.
The event brought together Buddhist leaders from 51 countries and featured several guests of honor, including representatives of the United Nations Secretary-General, the King of Uganda, and members of the Royal Families of Bhutan, Cambodia, and Thailand. The ceremonies were also attended by the number of foreign ambassadors, diplomats, and consuls general accredited in Japan.
During the visit, Ambassador Amphay toured the headquarters of the Buddhist Summit and held meetings with the organization’s President and Vice President. He also engaged in an exchange of views with fellow diplomats and met with the Mayor of Kato City. Furthermore, the Ambassador welcomed the delegation from the Lao PDR, led by Most Ven. Phramaha Veth Masaenai, President of the Central Buddhist Fellowship Organization of the Lao PDR.

The Embassy of the Lao PDR to Japan in collaboration with Vietnam Airlines company co-organized a seminar under theme: "Travel Partner Networking Seminar 2026" on March 17, 2026 at the JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo. The meeting was attended by 60 participants from the network of business partners of Japanese airlines and tourism agencies. The purpose of the seminar is to introduce the Vietnam Airlines' marketing strategy and promote investment and tourism in the Lao PDR. In the seminar, Mr. Ngo Sy Anh, Country Manager of Vietnam Airlines in Japan delivered opening remarks and keynote speeches were delivered by H.E Mr. Phan Quang HIEU, Vietnamese Ambassador and H.E Mr. Amphay Kindavong, Lao Ambassador to Japan respectively. In this occasion, Ambassador Amphay highlighted the investment promotion policies of the Lao PDR, especially the policies in the 9 priority sectors to promote investment set by the Lao government and the government's priorities in developing and attracting tourism, informing a number of foreign tourists visiting the Lao PDR in 2025, the government's goal to attract 5-6 million foreign tourists in 2026 and 22 million in the 5-year period from 2026-2030. Ambassador Amphay also invited Japanese businessmen and participants to visit the Lao PDR for tourism and studying the possibilities of investing in the Lao PDR in the future. After that, a Lao diplomat who in charge of the Economy, Trade, Investment and Tourism of the Embassy presented the trade-investment potentials and tourism attraction of the Lao PDR to the participants. The seminar closed successful, which participants expressed the investment in the Lao PDR, particularly beautiful tourist attractions and Lao culture.

On 31 March 2026, the Embassy of the Lao PDR to Japan in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Lao PDR, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Embassy of Japan to the Lao PDR, Lao Fashion Week and the Lao Association of Travel Agents organized a Lao Fashion and Culture Festival at the Japan Press Center, Tokyo attended by 170 Japanese and foreign guests. On this occasion, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG delivered the opening remarks with highlighting the seven decade friendship between the Lao PDR and Japan, which was elevated to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" last year. Ambassador Amphay also emphasized that this event was the final commemorative activity of the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Lao PDR and Japan, which presented the Lao cultural identity especially the "Naga Motif," which was became a UNESCO world heritage in 2023 through fashion shows from 12 brands of Lao designers and 3 brands of Japanese designers. Additionally, Ambassador Amphay also mentioned the historical visit of the Her Royal Highness Princess Aiko to the Lao PDR last year and Her Royal Highness had experienced in weaving Lao silk by herself, and expressed his hope that this event would further strengthen the relationship and cooperation between the Lao PDR and Japan.
Ms. KUNIMITSU Ayano, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan also expressed her appreciation for the close relationship between the Lao PDR and Japan in all sectors and emphasized the importance of Her Royal Highness Princess Aiko’s visit to Laos in further deepening the trust between people of the two nations. In addition, Ms. KUNIMITSU Ayano also expressed her pride in wearing a Pha Biang today. In addition, Honorable Ms. TSUCHIYA Shinako, Chairperson of the Japan-Laos Parliamentary Friendship Association expressed her appreciation for organizing this event, which is a good opportunity to introduce the Lao PDR, culture and the warm-heartedness of the Lao people to Japanese and the world at large.

On 24 March 2026, the Embassy of the Lao PDR to Japan, on behalf of the Government of the Lao PDR, held the Conferment Ceremony in honor to Japanese individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements and important contributions to the friendly relations and cooperation between the Lao PDR and Japan on the Occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between the Lao PDR and Japan and the 60th Anniversary of dispatch of Japanese volunteers by the Government of Japan to the Lao PDR.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Amphay KINDAVONG remarked that over the past seven decades, the friendly relations and cooperation between our two nations have grown continuously and our ties were upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025 and he also expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to all individuals and organizations that have contributed their efforts, wisdom and support in assistance to the Lao PDR in many areas such as diplomacy, socio-economic development, human resource development, trade and investment promotion as well as cultural exchanges, assisting to further strengthen the understanding between the people to people of the two nations. On this occasion, Ambassador Amphay conferred the Medal of Friendship upon four distinguished individuals and one organization including: Honorable Ms. TSUCHIYA Shinako, Chairperson of the Japan-Laos Parliamentary Friendship Association; Mr. TAKAHASHI Susumu, President of the Saitama-Laos Friendship Association; Mr. KAWAMURA Takeo, former Chairperson of the Japan-Laos Parliamentary Friendship Association; Mr. YAMADA Osamitsu, former President of the Kawasaki-Laos Friendship Association, Honorary President of the Kawasaki City Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and the Japan-Laos Parliamentary Friendship Association. In addition, the Medal of Development First Class was presented to the Japan International Cooperation Agency; and the Cross of Friendship Medals were awarded to nine individuals and five organizations. Thirteen individuals and eight organizations were also conferred with the Government Congratulatory Certificates.
Honorable Ms. TSUCHIYA Shinako, Chairperson of the Japan-Laos Parliamentary Friendship Association, on behalf of the recipients, expressed her profound and great honor in receiving such high recognition from the Government of the Lao PDR. She also praised the role of JICA in dispatching volunteers to the Lao PDR, which is a symbol of the six-decade long friendship. Ms. TSUCHIYA reaffirmed her commitment to continue working with Japanese organizations to strengthen the bilateral friendship and cooperation between the Lao PDR and Japan.
The ceremony was held in a warm atmosphere, confirming the Lao government’s sincere thanks for the kindness and invaluable support from Japanese friends over the past 70 years.

The Embassy of the Lao PDR to Japan in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Ladies Friendship Society Inc (ALFS) organized a study tour to Vietnam and Luangprabang, Lao PDR from 24 to 27 February 2026, led by the spouses of Vietnamese and Lao ambassadors and accompanied by spouses of some foreign ambassadors to Japan and spouses of former Japanese politicians in a total of 30 people. The delegation visited Vietnam from 24 to 25 February 2026 and visited Luangprabang on 26 to 27 February 2026. During the visit to Luangprabang. On 25th February 2026, Embassy of the Lao PDR to Japan in collaboration with Tokyo Women Club (TWC) hosted a promotion event of Lao culture and tourism at the Embassy, attended by 62 members of the TWC, including Japanese women and foreign women married with Japanese citizens. At the event, H.E. Ambassador AMPHAY KINDAVONG, delivered opening remarks and expressed his great pleasure to host the first Lao cultural and tourism promotion event together with TWC and presented Lao culture and traditions by highlighting the unique, elegant and hand-woven clothing of Lao women particularly Lao culture registered as the world intangible cultural heritage such as: Lao folk music, Lao Naga and Lao Lamvong, including tourist attractions and tourist sites registered as World Heritage Sites from UNESCO. Ambassador AMPHAY also described the activities of Princess Aiko's visit to the Lao PDR in November 2025 and invited all participants to visit the Lao PDR in the future. In addition, Ms. Valerie Moschetti, President of the TWC, expressed her gratitude to the Lao Embassy for hosting this Lao culture and tourism promotion event and expressed her hope to cooperate with the Lao Embassy in this area in the future. During the event, participants also listened to a presentation on the culture and tourist attractions in each province of the Lao PDR, visited the Embassy's cultural exhibition hall, tasted Lao food and learned to dance Lamvong Lao and acknowledged an Embassy's plan to organize the Lao Festival 2026 on May 23-24, 2026 at Yoyogi Park, Tokyo.
