Professor Yasue Arimitsu, Emeritus Professor at Doshisha University, studied in Australia as the first recipient of the Australia-Japan Foundation graduate scholarship, and is now a leading scholar of Australian literature.
Through her work on the Masterpieces of Contemporary Australian Literature, to which she contributed as both translator and supervisor, she has introduced diverse aspects of Australian society to Japanese audiences through literature, including works by First Nations authors.
This week in Australia marks National Reconciliation Week, an important annual period (27 May – 3 June) dedicated to deepening understanding and dialogue towards reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Research and translation activities like those of Professor Arimitsu play an important role in fostering greater understanding of diverse histories and cultures, and in strengthening mutual understanding between Australia and Japan.
