Machiya are traditional townhouses found in many parts of Japan, but most typically forming the architectural fabric of the historical capital of Kyoto. The long wooden homes with narrow street frontage are fast disappearing from the civic landscape, but remain a paragon of architectural versatility in the way the sliding doors which make up the walls of a machiya can be reconfigured to suit a myr

iad of usage needs. This page follows the restoration of a machiya called Matsu Sho An (literally, “Pine Villa”) on a quaint street in central Kyoto.
