『本書を完成させるまでに行ったさまざまな活動は、パリに遺された一通の書簡との出会いから始まった。それはパリ外国宜教会（Missions Strangeres de Paris以下MEP）の宣教師だったマラン・プレシ（Marin Plessis， 一八四四～一九〇八）が、一八七九年（明治一二）に現在の大阪府茨木市北部に位置する千提寺において、隠れキリシタンの信徒を発見したことを克明に記録したものだった。「聖フランシスコ・ザビエル像」などを秘かに伝えていたことで有名な千提寺の隠れキリシタンの存在は、これまで一九二〇年（大正九）に地元の関係者によって発見されたと言われてきた。しかし実際には、その約四〇年前の一八七九年にプレシによって発見されていたことが、この書簡によって確かに裏付けられたのである。
本書の目的は、大きく二つある。
第一には、上述のプレシ書簡の存在とその背景を詳しく紹介することで、幕末・近代期におけるキリスト教の再布教と「信徒発見」について考えるための新たな視座を示すことである。（中略）茨木における明治期の「信徒発見」は、約四〇年後の大正期の「遺物発見」の時点で、すでに地元の人々やフランス人宜教師ですらほとんど忘却していたという事実を指摘し得る。本書では、こうした一連の出来事を、その裏付けとなる史料と共に広く発言することで、キリシタン史研究に新たな考察と比較の視座を提供したい。（中略）
第二には、関西の隠れキリシタンとその歴史について、最新の情報から既知の研究成果までをバランスよく盛り込んだ案内書となるよう心がけたことである。近代までキリシタン仰が継承されたことが確認される地域は、九州以外では、関西の茨木が唯一である。また千提寺とその江隣の下音測で発見された遺物の多さと重要性は、キリシタン史を語るうえで欠くことのできない価値を持っている。』

Hokkaido Dairy Farm: Cosmopolitics of Otherness and Security on the Frontiers of Japan

Hokkaido Dairy Farm offers a historical and ethnographic examination of the rapid industrialization of the dairy industry in Tokachi, Hokkaido. It begins with a history of dairy farming and consumption in Hokkaido from a macro perspective. It then narrows the focus to examine concrete changes in a Tokachi-area dairying community, with shifts in human relationships alongside changes in human and cow connections through new technologies. In the final chapters, the scope is further narrowed to a detailed history and ethnography of a single industrializing dairy farm and the morphing cast of individuals attached to it, centering on their idiosyncratic searches for economic, social, and ontological security in what is popularly considered a peripheral region and industry. The culmination of over fifteen years of ethnographic, policy, and historical research, Hokkaido Dairy Farm argues that the dairy industry in Japan has always been entwined with notions of Otherness and security seeking, notably in terms of frontiers (SUNY Press 2024).

Paul Hansen is professor in the Department of International Resource Sciences at Akita University in Japan. He is a socio-cultural anthropologist with a focus on Japan and Jamaica, social theory in relation to identity, affect, embodiment, posthumanism, cosmopolitan studies, ecology and animal-human-technology relationships. He is also interested in food and musicology. Having published extensively on these topics in anthropology journals, he is co-editor (with Blai Guarné) of the book Escaping Japan: Reflections on Estrangement and Exile in the Twenty-First Century (2018, Routledge) and co-editor (with Susanne Klien) of a Special Issue of Asian Anthropology titled Rural Japan as Heterotopia (2022).

In memoriam Silvio Vita

Nous avons l’immense tristesse d’annoncer la disparition du Professeur Silvio Vita, survenue à Kyōto le 18 juin.
S. Vita était le coordinateur scientifique de l’Italian School of East Asian Studies et collaborait depuis plus de vingt ans avec le Centre de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient de Kyōto, à l’organisation de conférences et de colloques. Il était également membre du comité scientifique des Cahiers d’Extrême-Asie et avait siégé au conseil scientifique de l’EFEO.
Nous adressons nos sincères condoléances à son épouse et à ses enfants.

We are deeply saddened to announce that Professor Silvio Vita passed away in Kyoto on June 18.
Prof. Vita was the Scientific Coordinator of the Italian School of East Asian Studies and had collaborated for over twenty years with the École française d'Extrême-Orient in Kyoto, organizing lectures and colloquia. He was also a member of the Advisory Board of the Cahiers d'Extrême-Asie and had served on the Academic Council of the EFEO.
We offer our sincere condolences to his wife, family, and loved ones.

謹んで皆様にお知らせ申し上げます。シルヴィオ・ヴィータ先生が、2023年6月18日に京都にて亡くなられました。
ヴィータ先生はイタリア東方学研究所の研究企画代表であり、フランス国立極東学院京都支部とは20年以上にわたり、講演会やシンポジウムの主催など、様々な活動を共にしてきました。彼はまた、フランス国立極東学院の発行する学術誌『Cahiers d'Extrême-Asie』の諮問委員でもあり、フランス国立極東学院の学術委員も務めました。

心から哀悼の意を表するとともに、ご遺族の皆様や親交のあった方々にお悔やみを申し上げます。

「聖フランシスコ・ザビエル像」や「マリア十五玄義図」などを秘かに伝えたことで知られる大阪・茨木市のキリシタンの存在は、これまで1920年に地元の関係者が「発見」したとされてきましたが、それより約40年さかのぼる1879年にパリ外国宣教会のフランス人宣教師により「発見」されていたことが明らかにされました。
