La Villa Kujoyama est une institution culturelle française à Kyoto. Elle accueille, chaque année, une quinzaine d'artistes français et japonais.

ヴィラ九条山は、京都にあるフランス公式文化施設です。
毎年、フランス人と日本人の新規レジデント約20名を受け入れます。

Construite en 1992 par l’architecte Kunio Kato sur la montagne d’Higashiyama à Kyoto, la Villa Kujoyama est l'une des plus importantes résidences d'artistes françaises à l’étranger. Fondée sur

le modèle de la Villa Médicis à Rome, elle est aujourd'hui l'une des 6 antennes de l'Institut français du Japon et accueille, chaque année, une quinzaine de lauréats français et japonais, dans tous les domaines de la création artistique, pour une période de 4 à 6 mois.

1992年に建築家の加藤邦男氏の設計により、京都・東山の丘の上に建てられたヴィラ九条山は、フランスが国外に保有する最大級のアーティスト・イン・レジデンスです。ローマのヴィラメディチをモデルに創られ、アンスティチュ・フランセ日本の6つの支部のひとつになったヴィラ九条山は、毎年2ヶ月から6ヶ月の滞在期間で、芸術創作活動の、あらゆる分野から、フランス人と日本人レジデント約12名を受け入れます。

Après la rénovation de son bâtiment réalisée grâce au soutien de M. Pierre Bergé, la Villa Kujoyama accueille ses nouveaux résidents depuis septembre 2014 et développe plusieurs nouveaux programmes. Le premier initie la collaboration entre un artiste français et un artiste japonais autour d'un projet commun. Le second engage un dialogue entre des maîtres d'art français et les arts traditionnels au Japon. La Fondation Bettencourt Schueller est engagée aux côtés de la Villa Kujoyama depuis sa réouverture pour soutenir son programme de résidences.

ヴィラ九条山は、ピエール・ベルジェ氏の協賛により実現した、建物の改修工事の後、2014年9月より、新たにレジデントを迎え入れ、2つの新しいプログラムを発展させていきます。新プログラムのひとつは、フランス人アーティストと日本人アーティストによる、共同プロジェクトを巡るコラボレーションです。もうひとつは、フランスの優れた工芸家と日本の伝統工芸との対話を促すことです。
リニューアルオープン後、ヴィラ九条山の活動は、ベタンクール・シューラー財団の支援を受けます。

🌦️ Tous les premiers jeudis du mois, la Villa Kujoyama ouvre ses portes au public !

Le 4 juin prochain, Aurélie Lanoiselée et Isabelle Daëron présenteront leurs recherches respectives sur l’art des nœuds japonais et les eaux souterraines au Japon. La première proposera notamment un dialogue et un atelier d’initiation avec l’historienne du design spécialiste des hanamusubi – nœuds de fleur – Yoshika Yajima, et la maîtresse de hanasubi Toshiko Tanaka.

Découvrez également deux œuvres vidéo de lauréats 2025 : Shokudo, film réalisé par Dimitri Krassoulia-Vronsky sur les recherches de Martin Planchaud autour de la restauration collective au Japon, et « The Final Love », troisième chapitre du projet de Darius Dolatyari-Dolatdoust & Grégoire Schaller, portant sur la théâtralisation de la mort.

Pour clôturer la journée, Emi Ogura et Muriel Marschal viendront activer l’Orgue de papier de François-Xavier Richard : ensemble, elles donneront vie aux mythes du Kojiki, à travers leur souffle, leur voix et le son du papier.

🌦️ 毎月第一木曜日、ヴィラ九条山は一般公開を行います！

6月4日、オレリー・ラノワゼレとイザベル・ダエロンが、日本における結びの芸術と地下水に関するそれぞれのリサーチを発表します。オレリー・ラノワゼレは、花結研究者の矢島由佳、そして花結び作家の田中年子氏との対話およびワークショップを行います。
また、2025年度レジデントによる2本の映像作品も上映されます。ディミトリ・クラッスーリア＝ヴロンスキー監督による『Shokudo』は、マルタン・プランショによる日本の集団食文化に関するリサーチをもとにした作品です。さらに、『The Final Love』は、グレゴアール・シャレール & ダリュス・ドラティアリ＝ドラドゥストによるプロジェクト第3章であり、「死」を演劇化することをテーマにしています。

一日の締めくくりとして、小倉笑とミュリエル・マルシャルが、フランソワ＝グザヴィエ・リシャールによる「紙のオルガン」を用いたパフォーマンスを行います。二人の演奏によって、世界と神々の誕生をたどる各シーンは、振動であり、音の質感であり、『古事記』の神話をよみがえらせます。

🌦️ On June 4, Aurélie Lanoiselée and Isabelle Daëron will present their respective research projects on the art of Japanese knot-making and underground waters in Japan. Aurélie Lanoiselée will lead a dialogue and introductory workshop with design historian Yoshika Yajima, a specialist in hanamusubi (flower knots), and hanamusubi master Toshiko Tanaka.

You will also be able to discover two video works by the 2025 laureates: Shokudo, a film directed by Dimitri Krassoulia-Vronsky based on Martin Planchaud’s research into collective catering in Japan, and The Final Love, the third chapter of a project by Darius Dolatyari-Dolatdoust & Grégoire Schaller exploring the theatricalization of death.

To conclude the day, Emi Ogura and Muriel Marschal will activate François-Xavier Richard’s Paper Organ; through breath, voice, and the sound of paper, they will bring the myths of the Kojiki to life.

[RETOUR SUR LE DERNIER JEUDI DE LA VILLA]

🍃 Le jeudi 7 mai, Aurélie Lanoiselée, Isabelle Daëron, Raphaël Zarka, Karl Mazlo et Hippolyte Hentgen ont présenté leurs recherches en cours dans leurs studios. La Villa Kujoyama a invité Emilie Even, collaboratrice des lauréats et spécialiste du papier washi, dont le travail met en lumière autant la matière que celles et ceux qui la façonnent. Deux autres conférences ont également eu lieu: la première, modérée par Diane Dufour, réunissait Victoire Thierrée et Yasuko Tomatsu, directrice du INTERFACE Shomei Tomatsu Laboratory, qui ont évoqué les résonances entre les travaux du photographe japonais Shomei Tomatsu et de Victoire Thierrée. Pour clôturer la journée, Isabelle Daëron invitait à une plongée dans l'univers des eaux souterraines aux côtés de la fonderie Nagashima et de la fondation des eaux souterraines de Kumamoto.

Villa Kujoyama also welcomed Emilie Even, a collaborator of the residents and a specialist in washi paper, whose work sheds light both on the material itself and on the people who make it. Two more talks were also held during the day. The first, moderated by Diane Dufour, brought together Victoire Thierrée and Yasuko Tomatsu, director of the INTERFACE Shomei Tomatsu Laboratory, for a conversation exploring the resonances between the work of Japanese photographer Shomei Tomatsu and that of Victoire Thierrée. To close the day, Isabelle Daëron invited visitors to delve into the world of underground water together with the Nagashima Foundry and the Kumamoto Groundwater Foundation.

[TOURNÉE DE L'ORGUE DE PAPIER]

🎼 9 ans après sa première résidence à la Villa Kujoyama, François-Xavier Richard revient à Kyoto pour une tournée exceptionnelle autour de son étonnant Orgue de papier. Pensée sous le signe de l’accessibilité et de l’ouverture, cette tournée se déploie dans 8 lieux différents — du centre de Kyoto aux zones montagneuses, jusqu’à l’île d’Awaji. Dans chaque lieu, l’orgue prend vie de deux façons : grâce à l’intervention d’une percussionniste qui en révèle toutes les textures sonores, ou comme accompagnement musical de récits issus du Kojiki.

「紙のオルガンのツアー」

🎼 9年前にヴィラ九条山で初めてレジデンスを行ったフランソワ＝グザヴィエ・リシャールが、「紙のオルガン」のツアーで再び日本を訪れます。このツアーは京都市中心部から京都市郊外や山あいの地域へ、さらに淡路島まで、8か所・全8公演で展開されます。会場ごとの環境や社会的背景に寄り添いながら、多様な人々との出会いを生み出します。それぞれの会場で、ふたつの異なる魅力的な演奏スタイルをお楽しみいただけます。ひとつは打楽器としての演奏。紙ならではの繊細で多彩な響きが、豊かな音の世界を紡ぎ出します。もうひとつは、語りの楽器としての演奏。

なかなか聴くことのできない紙のオルガンをぜひお楽しみください。

[TOUR OF THE PAPER ORGAN]

🎼 Nine years after his first residency at Villa Kujoyama, François-Xavier Richard returns to Kyoto with a tour centered on his striking Paper Organ. The project unfolds across eight performances in eight locations, from central Kyoto to more remote, mountainous areas, and as far as Awaji Island. Designed to be open and accessible, the tour of the Paper Organ will reach a wide range of audiences and engage with diverse geographical and social contexts. At each venue, the organ is activated in two ways: through a percussion performance that brings out the richness of its sonic textures, and as an accompaniment to spoken narratives drawn from the Kojiki.

Le 7 mai, venez rencontrer Isabelle Daëron et Aurélie Lanoiselée, ainsi que Karl Mazlo, Raphaël Zarka et Hippolyte Hentgen, qui participent à leur premier Jeudi de la Villa. La journée sera ensuite rythmée par trois conférences: Emilie Even, spécialiste du papier washi et collaboratrice de nombreux lauréats, viendra présenter son travail. Three talks will also be held: first, Emilie Even, a specialist in washi paper who collaborated with many residents, will present her work. Next, Victoire Thierrée will give a talk moderated by Diane Dufour, together with Yasuko Tomatsu, director of the INTERFACE Shomei Tomatsu Laboratory. This talk will revolve around the exhibition “Okinawa!!,” currently presented at the Institut français du Kansai as part of KG+. 🌸 Le jeudi 2 avril dernier, le public est allé à la rencontre d'Aurélie Lanoiselée, Claire Lange & Lucie Roy et Isabelle Daëron dans leurs studios. Marion Delarue (2019, métiers d'art) de retour en post-résidence, a également présenté ses recherches en cours et ses pièces - peignes, ornements - qui entretiennent un dialogue étroit avec le corps et les matières naturelles. Enfin, Claire Lange & Lucie Roy ont clôturé la journée avec une conférence aux côtés des chefs Masashi Anpeiji (anpeiji), Takuji Takahashi (Kinobu), et Atsushi Nakahigashi, PDG de OneRiceOneSoup, qui ont chacun exposé leur vision de la saisonnalité en cuisine, à travers les ingrédients mais aussi les contenants utilisés.

🌸 On Thursday, April 2, the public visited the studios of Aurélie Lanoiselée, Claire Lange & Lucie Roy and Isabelle Daëron. Marion Delarue (2019, crafts), back in Japan for a post-residency, also presented her ongoing research and her works—combs and ornaments—that engage in a close dialogue with the body and natural materials. Claire Lange and Lucie Roy concluded the day with a talk alongside chefs Masashi Anpeiji (anpeiji), Takuji Takahashi (Kinobu), and Atsushi Nakahigashi, CEO of OneRiceOneSoup, each of whom shared their vision of seasonality in cuisine, expressed through both ingredients and the vessels used.

[|RETOUR SUR LE DERNIER JEUDI DE LA VILLA]

✨Le jeudi 5 mars, le public a pu déambuler dans les studios des lauréates Claire Lange & Lucie Roy, Isabelle Daëron, Victoire Thierrée, Aurélie Lanoiselée et Diane Dufour, et en apprendre plus sur leurs recherches en cours.

Deux artistes de retour au Japon en post-résidence, Simon Nicaise (2024, arts plastiques) et Sandrine Elberg (2021, photographie), ont également présenté la suite de leurs projets. Simon Nicaise, dans la continuité de ses recherches sur la fermentation, a notamment mené une discussion avec le producteur de saké Kentarō Chōkeiji, qui a expliqué le processus de fabrication du doburoku (saké non-filtré), produit de manière traditionnelle.

En deuxième partie de soirée, la Villa a accueilli la photographe Tomoko Sawada, pour un dialogue avec la curatrice Marina Amada. Enfin, ce Jeudi s'est achevé avec un set de DJ Sundae, offrant un temps d'échange prolongé entre les artistes et les visiteurs.

また、ポストレジデンスで再来日しているシモン・ニケーズ（2024年度、造形芸術）とサンドリーヌ・エルベルグ（2021年度、写真）も、それぞれのプロジェクトの続編を発表しました。シモン・ニケーズの招待により、醸造家の長慶寺健太郎氏がどぶろくの製造工程を紹介しました。

夕方には、写真家の澤田知子氏とキュレーターの天田万里奈氏が対談を行いました。最後には、DJ Sundaeが会場を盛り上げ、一日を締めくくりました。

✨On Thursday, March 5, visitors had the opportunity to learn more about the ongoing researches of the residents Claire Lange & Lucie Roy, Isabelle Daëron, Victoire Thierrée, Aurélie Lanoiselée, and Diane Dufour.

Former residents Simon Nicaise (2024, visual arts) and Sandrine Elberg (2021, photography) were also back in Kyoto to continue their projects, and presented them to the public. As part of his research on fermentation, Simon Nicaise held a discussion with sake producer Kentarō Chōkeiji, who explained the traditional process of making doburoku (unfiltered sake).

In the second part of the evening, the Villa welcomed photographer Tomoko Sawada for a conversation with curator Marina Amada. The evening concluded with a DJ set by Sundae, offering an extended moment of exchange between the artists and visitors.

[ACTUALITÉS DES LAURÉATS]

🎍 La designer de bijoux Marion Vidal explore le bambou comme un territoire de création à part entière. Elle en révèle la singularité, les propriétés physiques et la charge symbolique, tout en poussant le matériau vers une expression sculpturale.

L'exposition « Précieux Bambou », du 27 mars au 22 mai 2026, inaugure sa première collaboration avec la Galerie MiniMasterpiece. En choisissant le bambou, matériau inattendu dans l’univers du bijou précieux, Marion Vidal invente un nouveau langage de formes. Elle compose avec sa croissance fulgurante, son lien entre terre et ciel, ses aspérités et ses contrastes – nœuds, textures, clair et sombre, variation d’échelle – pour trouver un point d’équilibre entre la liberté organique de la matière et un dessin précis, volontairement minimal.

[EN RÉSIDENCE]

🎈 Le projet de .thierree s’inscrit dans la continuité de ses recherches sur le détournement du papier par l’armée impériale japonaise. En 1944-45, des feuilles de washi furent utilisées pour construire des ballons-bombes ensuite envoyés en direction des États-Unis, à plus de 10 000 km de distance. Elle souhaite également travailler sur une série de sculptures en collaboration avec un Trésor National Vivant de « fabrication de papier », questionnant les propriétés aériennes de ce matériau en lien avec ses recherches sur E.A.T. (Experiments in Art & Technology).

🎈 第二次世界大戦中、旧日本軍が1944年から1945年にかけて、 #和紙で作られた風船爆弾を一万キロメートル以上離れた米国まで送っていました。この史実に着想を受けたヴィクトワール・ティエレは、Experiments in Art and Technology（E.A.T.）に関するリサーチを続けながら、人間国宝である和紙職人と和紙の空中での特性を確かめながら一連の彫刻作品を制作する予定です。

🎈 Victoire Thierrée examines how, in 1944-45, the Imperial Japanese Army used washi paper to build balloon bombs that were launched against the United States, 10, 000 kilometers away. She wishes to work with a National Living Treasure in papermaking, and produce sculptures that investigate washi paper’s aerial properties, in connection with her research on E.A.T. (Experiments in Art & Technology).
