Starting this month, I will be uploading a monthly newsletter in both English and Japanese to Facebook and Instagram! My predecessor at City Hall here in Katori had been doing the same during his tenure, and while I have also been writing newsletters each month since getting here, so far they have only been shared within City Hall (I have been writing them in Japanese only up to this point).

Writing is something I enjoy doing periodically, so please take a look if you enjoy this sort of content! This month's theme is flowers and Japanese "Hanakotoba" (the language of flowers)!

For those of you learning Japanese, try and maybe read the Japanese version too!

It isn’t quite festival season yet, but the months are passing quickly and before you know it, the Sawara Grand Festival will be right around the corner!🎊🎑

The Suigo Sawara Float Museum is home to a collection of Sawara Grand Festival memorabilia dating as far back as the Edo Period! The main attraction however is the float viewing room, where you can take a look at two of the floats that will be used in the next festival year round! The float museum was one of the first places I visited in Sawara, and the floats leave me in awe each time I go back😮

The Suigo Sawara Float Museum is open from 9:00 to 16:30 daily, and is closed on Monday (except on holidays where the museum will instead be closed on the next weekday that isn’t a holiday). Take a look and get ready for the festival season!

The Sawara Grand Festival for Summer of 2026 will go from July 10th (Friday) through July 12th (Sunday)! If you’re overseas or in a different part of Japan, now’s the time to start making your plans to come!!

Suigo Sawara Ayame Park is gearing up for its yearly Iris Festival from 5/23 to 6/21, but in the meantime, you can go to take a look at beautiful wisteria flowers! The Wisteria Viewing Event kicked off this past Saturday (4/18) and will be going on until 5/6! Visit Suigo Sawara Ayame Park to take a look at the flowers hung up throughout the park! I personally have never had the chance to see wisteria in person (to my knowledge), so I am very excited to check it out next Tuesday! I'll be taking some new pictures and posting them here as well so stay tuned and come out to Katori City if you are able to!

Here are some photos from last Thursday, the final day of the Shikinen Jinkosai!!⛩️⛩️🐴🐴

What an awesome experience to get to see this historic event in my first year here in Katori City! The festival was a huge success! A huge thanks to the Tourism and Commerce Division at City Hall that worked tirelessly to make this event happen, as well as to everyone who was able to make it out for the festivities😊

Looking forward to a great rest of the spring and summer, and keep your eyes out for more events in Katori City in the coming months!✨

Photos from the first day of Katori Jingu Shrine's Shikinen Jinkosai, a festival that occurs only once every 12 years in the year of the horse!🐴⛩

Over 3000 shrine parishioners lead a parade around the Sawara and Katori locales, boarding riverboats and carrying an Omikoshi containing the god enshrined at Katori Jingu Shrine all around the area!

Both days of the event was forecasted to rain, but we ended up miraculously with bright sunshine on both days (especially day 2)!

Enjoy the photos and videos I've put together of day 1 right now and keep your eyes peeled in the next few days for pics and videos of day 2!!

Thanks to everyone who was able to make it out on this historic occasion!

Here is some footage from the second half of the first day of the Shikinen Jinkosai (Wednesday 4/15)!!⛩️🐴

The Omikoshi arrived back to the bank of the Tone River via boat after connecting with the boat from Kashima! The procession left the riverbank and headed down into Sawara’s iconic old townscape, where the parade ended for the evening with the Omikoshi placed safely in its resting place for the night!

I still want to show you all my footage from the second day, so stay tuned for more Jinkosai in the coming days!!

Yesterday the long anticipated Shikinen Jinkosai finally began!!⛩️

I’ve got so much footage that I’m going to have to split the first day up into two separate posts, but here is a look at the first half of the day yesterday!

The procession and Omikoshi holding the god enshrined at Katori Jingu Shrine departed the Shrine yesterday morning, and made their way up the original pilgrimage route to the Tone River at Tsunomiya Toriigashi 🌊

More videos to come on Instagram soon and I will be uploading pictures in batches to Facebook starting tomorrow as well, so look forward to that!!🐴🐴

Tomorrow (4/15) the Shikinen Jinkosai finally kicks off at Katori Jingu!!🐴

Come out for this once in 12 year festival, which will be taking place in Sawara from 4/15 (Wed) to 4/16 (Thur)!!

Today (4/14), the day before the Shikinen Jinkosai was the Katori Jingu Shikinen Taisai, a special version of one of Katori Jingu’s biggest festivals, the “Reisai”. The doors to the “Hon-den”, part of Katori Jingu’s iconic jet-black shrine were opened, visitors were treated to Kagura performances and parishioners welcomed the god of Katori Jingu! ⛩️

We are so excited for the festivities tomorrow, and we hope you will come out to witness this historic Shikinen Jinkosai!!✨
