Let’s walk a 9 km historic salt road and enjoy the nature, local food, folk entertainments and more!

A soba noodle making workshop in February was a great opportunity to experience the local tradition.
We would like to share a video that one of the participants created about the experience.

The workshop was taught by “Otari-ryu Soba Denshoonin.”
It’s a group of locals who are trying to preserve the tradition of special soba noodle making method handed down only in Otari.

Attention: Residents of Otari village, Hakuba village, Omachi city, and Itoigawa city.

Special discount applies to all the above residents to visit Iwatake mountain resort for tourism purposes (except skiing/snowboarding) throughout the year now.
Please present a driver’s license or mynumber card to get discount at the ticket office. (only these two identifications will be accepted as a proof of residency.)

Attention: Road Closure
Due to the severe snowstorm, the route 148 between Iwatake intersection to Niigata-Nagano border has been closed since 16pm today January 24.

Please stay alert and refrain from going out unless necessary.

Due to the expected heavy snowfall in the area, JR Oito Line announced that the train services between Itoigawa, Minami Otari and Shinano Omachi shown on the photos will be suspended tomorrow (January 24).

※There will be no alternative transportation for both sections.

※Due to the effects of the severe cold weather, the services might be suspended even after 1/25.

Otari Village’s Special Winter
Product “Snow Cabbages” are available now.
　＊＊Cabbages that are grown in the snow＊＊

Locally grown in deep snow so that the cabbages have become sweet by preserving sugar to thrive in freezing environment.
Carefully dug out by hand from deep snow.
Crispy and sweet cabbages that are available only in winter time. Try fresh or add in the soup to give special flavor! We made gyoza fillings with snow cabbage(dumpling fillings) tonight, it was great!!

小谷村特産の雪中キャベツ、販売開始しております♪
雪の下で根を張ったキャベツは寒さに耐えて育つために糖分を蓄え甘〜いキャベツとなります。生でパリパリ、どんどんいけちゃいます😆
今夜は雪中キャベツで餃子も作ってみました。美味しかったです〜💕

Hakubavalley Tourism is hosting a SDGs and Gastronomy Event on November 3rd!

At the gastronomy market, you can find Otari’s signature food and produce such as Otarian gelato, Sasa-dango(rice cake in bamboo leaves), spicy miso(yum for dips!), melon-pan, vegetables, and more!
Also free mushroom miso soup will be given away in the Otari tent.

You can enjoy many other food vendors and the flea market for used outdoor gear!

日が昇るにつれ、木々と水面の反映が色鮮やかになっていきます。なんとステキな時間でしょうか。

A beautiful morning walk around Kamaike. As the sun goes up, the tree leaves start to shine brightly with amazing colors so does the reflection on the water surface. A very special moment!

The Gastronomy Harvest fair will be a great opportunity to capture the food culture of Hakuba valley by   introducing local cuisine made with local ingredients.
