④ Futaba Mirai Gakuen: Student Interview with Kaho

Hello! This is CIR Annabelle from Fukushima Prefecture.

Continuing this Futaba Mirai Gakuen student interview series, this time we’ll introduce Kaho Yoshida, a first-year senior high school student.

In addition to a one-week school trip to New Zealand, Kaho has recently spent three months abroad in Winnipeg, Canada, as part of a dance education program. There, she stayed with a host family of Sri Lankan background, experiencing both daily life and dance classes in a completely new environment.

At Futaba Mirai Gakuen, senior high school is when students start thinking about exploratory projects that can contribute to their community. Kaho has already finished her Futaba study tour and mandatory drama class. While she has not yet settled on a concrete project plan, one idea that stood out to her during her time abroad was the difference in approaches to dance between Canada and Japan. In Canada, she was fascinated with the emphasis on embedding meaning into choreography, whereas in Japan, her experience has been that expression and form are often the primary focus. Exploring the role of meaning in dance education in Japan is something she would like to explore through her project.

One aspect of culture shock she experienced abroad was food. Since Canada is home to such a wide range of families and cultures, it can be difficult to define a single “Canadian” cuisine. Living with a Sri Lankan host family, she initially found the food difficult to get used to because of the spiciness but gradually came to enjoy it. Through her study abroad, she got to witness and experience the cultural diversity that shapes everyday life in Canada.

After graduating, Kaho’s dream is to teach abroad in developing countries. She knows she’ll have to work hard on a second language, but with her new experience abroad and classes at Futaba Mirai Gakuen, she is ready to continue learning!

Check out our previous posts about the (1) school’s unique exploratory projects and (2) school’s sports and facilities!

③ Futaba Mirai Gakuen: Student Interview with Yuwa

Hello! This is CIR Annabelle from Fukushima Prefecture.

Continuing from last week’s post, we had the opportunity to chat with some students at Futaba Mirai Gakuen! This time we spoke with Yuwa Todo, a second-year senior high school student.

Yuwa has gained international experience through a week-long New Zealand school trip and a ten-month study abroad program in Germany. He has also been selected to participate in the March 2026 trip to New York for a UNIS-UN International Student Conference, where high school students from around the world come together to learn about and discuss global issues.

For Yuwa’s exploratory project, he worked on developing recipes and products using local produce from Hirono Town—specifically mikan! Together with four other second-year students, he collaborated with Maruto, a grocery store based in Fukushima and Ibaraki Prefectures, to develop and sell products while working with local farmers.

In the early stages, the group experimented with persimmons and other plants. They later focused on mikan, testing ways to use both the peel and the flesh, but Yuwa shared that their initial attempts didn’t taste very good, emphasising that finding the right technique required a lot of trial and error. Eventually, by applying methods similar to those used in developing yuzu-based products, they succeeded in creating flavours they were satisfied with. As of December 2025, they had developed five mikan-based products to present to the town mayor: pudding, tiramisu, yuzu tea, steamed buns, and even churros! Currently, the team is working on dishes to offer to visitors to Katsurao Village.

During Yuwa’s time in Germany, he felt that many people’s impression of Fukushima is still related to the nuclear power plant disaster. One thing he would like people to know about Fukushima is that it’s a place that is continually evolving and growing—something reflected in the kinds of projects students undertake at his school.

After returning to Fukushima, Yuwa wants to continue studying German and hopes to pass a proficiency exam. His dream is to work for Japan’s Ministry of Foreign affairs, where his multilingual proficiency will come in handy. Reflecting on his time abroad, he shared that he felt people generally have a positive impression of Japan, thanks to the efforts of those who have come before him—and he hopes to be able to contribute in the same way in the future!

Check out our previous two posts about the (1) school’s unique exploratory projects and (2) school’s sports and facilities!

② Futaba Mirai Gakuen: Facilities and Clubs

Hello! This is CIR Annabelle from Fukushima Prefecture.

Continuing from last week’s post, we explore the Futaba Mirai Gakuen’s school grounds, including their sports facilities!

Walking into the main building, we saw the emblems of the schools whose legacies Futaba Mirai Gakuen carries on. The teacher that guided us explained how he hopes for the students to always remember the legacies and spirits of the schools and those that came before.

At the entrance, there’s a lively open workspace where the students can brainstorm, study, or hang out. During our visit, we got to see this space in action. In the same space is “café fu”, a student-run café where students manage the register, food, and menu. Locals or other visitors can come to this café and get a taste of their efforts!

We also got a peek at their gyms and athletes hard at work! There was a large general gymnasium, a wrestling room, and a weight room. We watched a bit of their after-school wrestling practice, where many of those students had been admitted through the junior high school sports selection program.

The school is especially known for its badminton. Their badminton gymnasium is fully stacked with 10 separate courts, and we were told that there were even athlete dormitories nearby. We arrived during their after-school badminton practice where we could see both junior and senior high school students training under two Indonesian coaches. Hanging on the walls is a banner with names of participants of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics—alumni from Tomioka High School that existed before the disaster. Our guide told us that this reminds students of the path that came before them and encourages their continued hard work.

It’s clear that Futaba Mirai continues to carry forward a strong legacy of athletic excellence, with many students competing at national and international competitions too!

Check out the Japanese high school student interviews starting with our next post!

① Futaba Mirai Gakuen: Inside an Innovative Japanese High School

Hello! This is CIR Annabelle from Fukushima Prefecture.

This time we got a tour of “Futaba Mirai Gakuen” (Futaba Future High School), a high school located in Hirono Town, Futaba County. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake, evacuation orders and the resulting tsunami and nuclear accident disrupted education across the region. Temporary satellite schools were set up both inside and outside the prefecture. To improve the education in the region, Futaba Mirai Gakuen opened its senior high school in April 2015—carrying forward the legacy of local schools while reimagining what education could look like.

The school initiatives I found the most interesting are the mandatory drama class and student exploratory projects.
As time passes, there is growing concern that memories of the disaster and the lessons learned may fade, especially for a generation that did not experience it firsthand. To combat this, all first-year senior high school students, regardless of whether they plan on pursuing athletics, academics, or work right after high school, are required to take a drama class.

First, students visit the prefecture’s coastal region, where they hear directly from individuals who lived through the disaster. Taking what they learn, they must put together a play. Our guide emphasised that students not only learn about the facts of the disaster, but the feelings of those who had to continue their daily lives. For example, a student could play a TEPCO employee (those working for or at the nuclear power plant) who is also a father. The students need to consider potential conflicting and complex emotions that they might have felt. When it comes to the final play, they even invite those that they interviewed! I thought it was so creative to make the students do a play on what they’ve learned. It taps not only into their imagination, but their empathy as well.

After this experience, students take part in an exploratory project course, where they investigate questions they are curious about. Around the entrance of the school, we saw displays of student-led projects. Later, we also had the chance to speak directly with students of this school about their experiences.

Check out the school’s facilities in our next post, and student interviews in the one following!

Nakano Fudoson

Hello! This is CIR Yoyo from Fukushima Prefecture. We visited Nakano Fudoson in Iizaka Town, Fukushima City.

Nakano Fudoson is known in the Tohoku region as one of the “Three Great Fudos of Japan” and has long been loved as a place associated with protection from misfortune and disasters. These “Fudo” are places that house a Buddhist deity. Many people also visit to pray for family well-being and good health, making it one of Fukushima’s most well-known spiritual spots for warding off bad luck.

It takes about 25 minutes by car from Fukushima Station. As you leave the city behind and the feeling of the mountains begins to grow stronger, you arrive at Nakano Fudoson. After getting out of the car and walking into the temple grounds, the first thing that caught my eye was the bright vermilion Dainichi-do standing quietly among the trees. It was the kind of view that makes you stop for a moment. The sound of the large waterfall echoed through the grounds, and simply standing there made me feel calm.

Nakano Fudoson is said to have been founded in 1179. Three forms of Fudo Myoo (the deity) are enshrined here: Yakuyoke Fudo Myoo, Ganmori Fudo Myoo, and Mikazuki Fudo Myoo. People come here with many different prayers and wishes, especially for protection from misfortune.

As you continue deeper into the grounds, you come to a cave worship route known as the Okunoin. Being able to walk through the cave itself is one of the unique features of this place. The route connects seven caves where mountain ascetics once stayed during their training, and visitors can make their way through the maze-like space in about 5 to 10 minutes. Inside, statues of the Thirty-Six Attendants are enshrined, and there is also the “Eternal Flame”, which is said to have continued burning since the temple’s founding. Even in the stillness of the cave, you can feel the long history of faith that has been preserved here.

Looking at the vermilion hall, walking through the cave, and listening to the sound of the waterfall, Nakano Fudoson felt like a place where I could slow down and quietly clear my mind.

Take a Peek Inside a Supermarket in Fukushima!

Hello! This is CIR Yoyo from Fukushima Prefecture.
Living in Fukushima, I’ve come to realise that some of the most interesting discoveries are not only found at famous sightseeing spots, but also in the small moments of everyday life. One of those places is the local supermarket!

This time, Dani and I visited LionDor Aizu Apio Store. LionDor is a supermarket chain based mainly in Fukushima Aizu region, and it is a familiar part of daily life for many local people. It is also a great place to explore Fukushima’s food culture, with plenty of fresh local vegetables and regional specialties.

As we walked through the store, we came across all kinds of ingredients and products that felt uniquely local. One thing we especially recommend is Maruta Miso from Aizu. Miso soup made with this miso has such a rich aroma and deep flavour that you may find yourself reaching for a second bowl before you know it.

We also found many other local favourites, including yubeshi, a traditional sweet from Fukushima, fresh horse meat often seen in Aizu supermarkets, and natto made in Aizu. And of course, we can’t forget Rakuo Café au Lait, a beloved local drink from Fukushima! If you are lucky, you might even come across a limited-edition Fukushima-only flavour on the shelves.

Another favourite for Dani is Kitakata ramen. One of the best things about shopping at a local supermarket is being able to bring home the flavours of the region so easily. The local fresh noodles section was filled with fresh noodles from well-known shops, and it was impressive to see so many choices all in one place.

Of course, no visit to a Japanese supermarket would be complete without stopping by the snack aisle. There were so many tempting choices that Dani and I ended up having our own little snack battle. After a lot of indecision, I picked Jagarico (salad flavour), while Dani went for KitKat. It turned into a fun showdown: savoury vs. sweet!

We usually think of supermarkets as just part of everyday life, but when you slow down and take a closer look, they reveal a warm and familiar side of Fukushima. In the evening, you’ll see people stopping by after work, families picking up groceries for dinner, and children excitedly choosing snacks on their way home from school. Seeing scenes like these reminds me that Fukushima is not just a place I visit—it’s a place where I have built a life.

Visiting famous sightseeing spots is always wonderful, but if you ever come to Fukushima, why not stop by a local supermarket too? You may discover a different side of Fukushima—and maybe even find a limited-edition flavour of Rakuo Café au Lait!

Warm Up with Nabeyaki Udon!

Hello! This is CIR Yoyo from Fukushima Prefecture.
Spring has arrived, but in Fukushima, it still feels a little chilly. On days like this, we always find ourselves craving something warm. And for us, nabeyaki udon is exactly the kind of dish that comes to mind.

This time, we visited a local restaurant called Marukoshi in Aizu Misato Town. It’s a place that has long been loved by the local community, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant itself is quite spacious—larger than a typical restaurant—and it’s often used for group meals and gatherings as well.

As soon as you step inside, you’re greeted by a cheerful “Irasshaimase! (Come in)” and the friendly smile of the owner—it instantly makes you feel at ease.
The interior has a nostalgic charm, and the menu is impressively extensive. From ramen and rice bowls to curry rice and omurice, there are so many options that it’s honestly hard to choose. But this time, we came with one thing in mind: nabeyaki udon.

When the nabeyaki udon arrived, it was still bubbling in the pot and smelled amazing. Even before eating, the steam and the warm dashi aroma already made us feel cozy. The noodles were chewy, and the broth had a gentle, comforting flavour that slowly warmed us from the inside out. It was exactly what we needed on a day that still felt a little like winter.
We really enjoyed it! Gochisōsama-desh*ta! (Thank you for the meal)

The restaurant is also located close to Isasumi Shrine, a well-known sightseeing spot. Whether you’re stopping by for a visit or coming in summer to see the wind chimes, it feels like the perfect place to take a break and enjoy a warm meal afterward.

Let’s Try Ice Fishing at Hibara Lake!

Kia ora koutou! This is CIR Dani from Fukushima Prefecture.
Winters in Fukushima can get seriously cold, especially from December to March in the Aizu region.
So, we all thought what a wonderful time to go ice fishing!

I had heard of ice fishing as a concept but had never tried it until now! We went ice fishing through Yamagucchi, a fishing company that operates at Hibara Lake.

I found ice fishing to be a unique experience. After meeting at the restaurant Medaka no Gakko*, we got pulled on a snowmobile to the fishing site!
You use a fishing line with many hooks to have a greater chance at catching the fish, with each hook having a bit of bait hooked onto it. Once the fishing line is dropped into the water, you are meant to keep tugging on the string at a relatively fast rate so that the fish can notice it. I misunderstood this and thought that, like the main type of fishing, you had to keep the fishing rod still and that moving it would scare the fish away. Eventually Yoyo and Annabelle would both catch fish due to their good technique, but I was still waiting.

Thinking that it might be because the bait had lost their flavour or come off or the like, I tried to reapply the bait. Reapplying the bait was very difficult because you had to cut up the live bait and attach it to the hook. However, I didn’t know that there was a correct order to it and so I ended up taking a long time trying to put the bait on until one of the staff came along and did it for me. Unfortunately, by the end of the time limit I was the only one to not catch anything. A little disappointing, but I guess it gives me a chance to come back next winter and try again!

After the fishing, you can go back to Medaka no Gakko for fried Japanese smelt. It tasted so good I couldn’t stop eating! They also offer a range of other Japanese food to cure your hunger after fishing.

Although I wasn’t able to catch anything this time, I might try again next year! Will I see you there next winter?

*Closed during winter (October to April). They prepare bento for people that come to fish.

Niitsuru Onsen Nda

Hello! This is CIR Yoyo from Fukushima Prefecture.
I had the chance to stay at Niitsuru Onsen Nda in Misato Town. The first thing that caught my attention was, of course, the name. “Niitsuru Onsen”
that part makes sense as the name of a hot spring, but why the “nda” at the end? The sound of it was somehow cool and intriguing, so I looked it up. It turns out “nda” is a Tohoku dialect expression meaning “that’s right” or “yes, exactly.” Somehow it feels warm and friendly—and very Aizu-like. This kind of naming is totally my thing.

The facility is very clean, with well-equipped amenities such as a dining area, a book corner, and a kids’ room. It’s also in a lovely location, surrounded by scenery that lets you really feel the nature and character of Aizu. The room that I stayed in was a traditional tatami room. Through the large window, the Aizu Basin spread out before me, with snow-covered Mt. Bandai rising in the distance. Sitting there, taking a sip of tea while enjoying the view
 it was simply perfect.

And of course, the highlight was the hot spring itself. This hot spring is known as a “beauty bath.” The water has a silky texture and gentle smoothness that is said to be good for the skin. It seems to be quite popular—many local residents come here to enjoy the baths as well.

I woke up a little early and headed to the bath, where I had the whole place to myself—a wonderfully luxurious way to start the day. As I sank into the warm water, I looked out the window and saw snow beginning to fall softly. I suddenly remembered the one time I visited a hot spring with my parents as a child and happened to be there during a heavy snowfall. I still remember how excited I was. It’s funny how relaxing in hot springs can bring old memories back.

All I can say is that my skin felt incredibly smooth after the bath—and it stayed that way all day. At that point, I completely understood why they call it a beauty bath.

Looking out at the scenery, soaking in the warm water, and feeling both body and mind slowly unwind—it felt like the perfect place to reset from everyday fatigue.
