Enjoy the Plethora of Early Summer Activities at Hiraodai!
Hiraodai in Kitakyushu City is one of Japan’s leading karst plateaus. The clusters of white limestone rocks dotting the landscape look like flocks of sheep, and the subterranean limestone caves offer majestic natural scenery that was created over unfathomable lengths of time.

One of the best things to do here in the summertime is trekking! Lovely flowers and the chirping of birds create the perfect walking environment to feel refreshed.

The Senbutsu and Mejiro limestone caves allow visitors to witness the beauty of naturally-formed stalactites, and as they maintain a cool temperature, they are a great destination in the summer.

Enjoy the Sound of Wind Chimes at the Little Frog Temple!
Shohoji in Iizuka City is a branch temple of Nyoirinji Temple in Ogori City, which is well known as the “Frog Temple,” earning it the nickname “Little Frog Temple.” There are countless stone frog statues throughout the premises, which are sure to bring a smile to your face.

One of its biggest draws during the summer is a festival that is held from May to September, featuring wind chimes with strips of paper that visitors have written their wishes onto. The thousands of wind chimes decorating the shrine grounds sway in the breeze and make refreshing ringing sounds, creating a quintessentially summery scene.

Let your mind and soul be soothed by the sights and sounds at this temple.

Goya Limestone Cave - Experience the Wonders of Nature
Located in Tagawa City, Goya Limestone Cave was carved out over millennia by groundwater eroding the surrounding limestone, and is designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument.

The first 170 meters from the entrance have been developed as a sightseeing course, where an array of extraordinary sights await, all shaped by the slow passage of time - strange, otherworldly rock formations, notches in the cave walls formed via erosion, and more.

The interior stays refreshingly cool throughout the year, making it a wonderful escape as the summer heat begins to build.

Part of the appeal is the sense of adventure the cave offers: the entrance is tucked just beyond the grounds of Susa Shrine, and visitors switch on the cave's lights themselves as they make their way through.

Admire Around 40,000 Irises in Bloom, Coloring Early Summer
Toyotsu Iris Park in Miyako Town is a place where you can experience the distinctive beauty of early summer in Japan.

Each year from mid-May to mid-June, 50 varieties of irises - some 40,000 blooms in all - bloom in succession, painting the park in sweeping shades of white and purple. A zigzagging wooden walkway known as a “yatsuhashi” bridges the park's pond, letting visitors wander right among the flowers for a closer look.

In early June, when the blooms reach their peak, the Iris Festival brings the park to life with stage events, local specialty stalls, and food trucks.

Come and lose yourself in the unhurried charm of a Japanese early summer!

Relax Amid Fresh Spring Greenery at Kiyomizu-dera Honbo Teien Garden
Located in Miyama City, this garden is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, said to have been designed by Sesshu, a celebrated painter and monk of the Muromachi period (1336 - 1568).

The garden's crowning feature is how Mount Atago, visible in the distance, is drawn into the composition as though it were part of the garden itself.

In early summer, from May through June, the grounds are awash in vibrant fresh greenery, making it a wonderful place to slow down and immerse yourself in nature and history.

The garden is equally renowned for its autumn foliage, when vivid red maple leaves reflect in the pond.

The surrounding hillside is also dotted with historic sites, offering an enriching and relaxing walk through scenery that shifts beautifully with every season.

Top 3 Must-Try Foods in Fukuoka and Hakata
● Hakata Motsunabe
Motsunabe is a hearty yet healthy hot pot that has become a favorite among women. It features chives and cabbage simmered in a rich soy sauce or miso-based broth. Cooked right at the table in a stainless steel pot, the meal traditionally wraps up with either champon noodles or rice to soak up all the remaining flavors.

● Tonkotsu Ramen
Fukuoka's signature tonkotsu ramen is all about its rich, creamy broth and thin noodles. Part of the fun is customizing your bowl - choose your preferred noodle firmness and pile on tableside toppings like white sesame seeds, pickled red ginger, and pickled mustard greens.

● Hakata Udon
Udon is said to have originated in Fukuoka, and it remains a proud local staple. What sets it apart is its clear, delicate broth and wonderfully soft noodles. The Hakata way to enjoy it is topped with burdock root tempura or fish cake, with a touch of yuzu pepper to finish.
